Folks, the prototype MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs and iPhones that have emerged on eBay and the like are nearly INDISTINGUISHABLE from the final product.

Give it a rest.

Well, we told you so. The fourth-generation iPhone prototype that leaked its way out into the world over the weekend has found its way to Gizmodo, and they've examined it exhaustively enough to prove that it's the real thing. Not only does it show up in iTunes, Xcode, and System Profiler, but it has different product identifiers than the 3G or 3GS, and it's packed with Apple-labeled components inside. Unfortunately, they couldn't get it to boot out of recovery mode, but a number of new features and changes are evident just by holding it. Obviously, it's thinner than the 3GS, with smaller internal components and a larger battery inside the metal frame. There's also a front-facing camera, a larger and better camera with a flash on the back, a higher-res display that's slightly smaller than the current models, a second mic for noise cancellation, and that new back, which Giz seems a bit confused about but we're fairly sure is glass or ceramic. It's also three grams heavier than a 3GS, with a 16 percent larger battery and the same new MicroSIM slot used in the iPad.

We're also told the phone was found running iPhone OS 4.0 but that it was remotely killed before Giz could actually see it, and that they can't get it to boot because it requires a bespoke build of the OS. We're assuming Apple's hot on the trail of this thing, so hit the source link while you can and check a couple more pics after the break.

In California you have certain duties when you find something, under the Civil Code:

2080. Duties of finder

Any person who finds a thing lost is not bound to take charge of it, unless the person is otherwise required to do so by contract or law, but when the person does take charge of it he or she is thenceforward a depositary for the owner, with the rights and obligations of a depositary for hire. Any person or any public or private entity that finds and takes possession of any money, goods, things in action, or other personal property, or saves any domestic animal from harm, neglect, drowning, or starvation, shall, within a reasonable time, inform the owner, if known, and make restitution without compensation, except a reasonable charge for saving and taking care of the property. Any person who takes possession of a live domestic animal shall provide for humane treatment of the animal.

I don't get this.

Isn't this just theft?

If it was my phone and some tea-leaf half-inched it, them selling it on and someone else receiving the stolen goods is a major offence?

This is probably the biggest tech leak of the decade. There is probably a story behind the story.

Engadget published photos yesterday.
Gizmodo published them today.

Apparently they have been sitting on them for a week. Which I suspect means that lawyers have been busy.

Gizmodo: Hello Apple. - We have a device that might belong to you.
Apple: We deny everything! But we would like it back!
Gizmodo: Certainly! We will courier it over to you at once.
Apple: Gee thanks!
Gizmodo: Would you like to comment on the photographs we have taken of it?
Apple: Photographs?
Gizmodo: Lots of them!
Apple: ...But it's our phone! You can't! We have scary lawyers!
Gizmodo: We found it in a bar. We can.
Apple: We'll need to bring forward the launch. Can you wait two weeks before publishing?
Gizmode: How about a week?
Apple: Deal. (get me Moshe on the phone!)

Was that really necessary?

Why is it a fake?

1- Buttons are not what apple would design, not even on prototypes.

2- Design of the entire packaging, simply not apple, not even as prototype.

Even in prototypes apple includes their actual physical design and aesthetics simply because it is part of what they are testing. A prototype without the design is not a prototype.

3- Why is there two pin holes? One next to the headphone jack and one on the side? Expandable memory?
a- Apple won't put expandable memory in the next iphone.

b- there isn't any opening next to the headphone jack to show that there is anything that can be removable from it.

The opening on the side is to eject the sim. The opening on the top is for a second mic which is used for noise cancellation (like the Nexus One).

The buttons - (which have amazing microscopic bevels) double as camera shutter release.
The pin hole on the top is a secondary mic which is used for background noise removal.
The pin hole on the side is the release catch for the new sim tray.

Maybe they did this whole thing on purpose so they can get reviews from Apple fans from all over the world? Then they work and tweak this prototype. It just looks too realistic to be fake.. I don't like it though.. It's un-apple, as others have said.

I completely forgot about background noise cancelling mic. And with having a camera flash, it's more reasonable to see the use of individual volume buttons, which doubles as shutter button.

Also, now that the phone can be used as a point-and-shoot camera, the design actually works.

I actually stand corrected, that this could be the way the next phone looks.

I do retract my previous comment. Also, I said that the design didn't look apple-ish. But that was only looking at it from a phone/smartphone point of view. But now that it is an actual "real" point and shoot camera. The design simply works.

The straight sides, as opposed to the current curved design, provides for better hold when using it as a camera. And it doesn't hurt it at all when using it as a phone/smartphone.

Really?

Simple answer: no.

Buttons are entirely un-Apple, there are seams...

If this is it then I'm getting a 3GS instead. This thing is hideous.

Really? Honestly? Really?

Because a phone that will sit in your pocket most of the time is not "pretty" will result in you not buying one. My response to that is 'Bovine Scat!'

You will pre-order it because of the features it has and the 3GS lacks.

I love it.

Everyone moans at most new designs eg the 1st nano, the 3rd generation nano, then they get used to them.

9to5Mac makes a good point here. See attached pic.

Isn't it funny how they also describe the PowerBook as having "squared metallic corners", even though the TiBook as rectangular in all dimensions?

LUL at the geometry coach here.

Oh, be careful saying that here. Someone said the new iPhone 4G was too "square". I said there is nothing square about it - it's all rectangle.

It opened up Pandora's box. Apparently ONLY ON MacRumors - a rectangle is a square.

WRONG! Hello, did you read?! The post about the PowerBook transition also describes it as square!

Jeez boy! Square has more than a single meaning! I guess a Square-angle means a corner of a square? Hahahahahaha.

The ends are squared, the end -.-'

What is the point of Apple getting the iPhone 4G when they won't have LTE deployed until 2011. They were supposed to deploy it in 2010 but they are behind schedule... Though I guess this model is unlikely to hit the stores until 2011 so maybe I am judging too quickly!

Though never having owned a 3GS model, I would probably opt for this model in place of a Droid
