Not necessarily. I expect them to upgrade the iPod touch to 64GB and 128GB this year. Assuming the cheaper iPod colour comes in at 8GB and 16GB then it doesn't really replace the iPod touch for those with a decent size music collection.

Recently sold iphone 5 since it was so fragile.

I can't fathom this. My iPhone 5 goes naked. I've dropped it several times, even on concrete, and it holds up like an absolute beast.

I have been extremely impressed with how rugged the iPhone 5 is.

If it looks this good (glossy metalic) i might snag me one.

And for all those throwing numbers, no way this will be less than $300

did Apple sign a partnership with Lisa Frank?

(I don't really think those will be the actual colors)

These MUST be the new improved "leak proof" colors. Now apple knows who can't keep a secret. Someone's gonna be in trouble!

:D

In the West, sure.

For East Asia/Asia Pacific, I don't think so. Used iPhones and 7" tablets already swamped the price bracket. Promoting iPod Touch alongside iPhone Nano seems redundant, and wasteful to sell two devices when one can do the job today.

Same goes for used iPod Classic, used 160GB and 30GB iPods remain plentiful, inexpensive and easy to come by. Audiophiles around this part of the world will be OK for another 5 years at least.

In this region of the world, at least, bring the curtain to Ipod Touch might be a better option.

Huge used markets and grey marketers throw a spanner in the work you see.

As a parent that's used Apple products since 1983 and had an iPhone since 2007, I've raised our kids with a love of all things Apple. They keep getting our hand-me-down iPhones once we upgrade (which is fine). But the price tag of current iPhones simply keeps buying our children new phones a non-option. To me... these cheaper, plastic, and very colorful rumored iPhones seem like the solution to our situation.

So, are you in the same boat I am in Thailand, by not having buying power you used to have as well?

If yes, prudent move for Apple. Customers don't have the same amount of money like they used to so they have to act.

When they come out, we'll all get to see what is real and what was fake.

Who cares? There's way too many armchair "experts" - everyone thinks they know what is right and wrong, what is real, what is fake and "What Apple DEFINITELY wouldn't make"

Uhm, no you don't - noone does, so hush. If they make cheapER (not cheap and tacky - cheapER) iPhones, GOOD! :)

Same old same old on Macrumors - all the "iSnobs" getting worried that a cheaper device is going to tarnish their delusions of being "premium" customers.... hilarious.

Newsflash folks: iPhone ownership is NOT the reserve of millionaires - any man, woman or child can own one, and they don't require cash up front. You're not shopping in Liberty or Fortnum and Mason, you're ALL consumers and they're mass produced consumer items. Apple WILL make this a quality product - they're not in the habit of producing junk, so quit fretting over it being "cheap" in terms of quality.

If you feel threatened by people being able to afford a lower price iPhone when paying outright for it, you have deeper and more worrying issues than iPhones. Don't like the colours? Hey - here's a profound thought - don't BUY one. :p

iLol.

Its called common sense mate.

Cheaper iPhone will get directly in the iPod touch price range. What any normal human will buy 32GB iPod touch for X money or 16GB iPhone for X+50 or 90$?

Its question of logic. What will be the Apple excuse for the low cost phone?
For the iPad mini it was the portability. For the iPod nano and shuffle it was the size. For every downgrade of existing product to other category of product Apple finds a reason. What category will the low cost phone be? They cant present it like "The cheapest version of our iPhone" or "The smaller one" or "The thiner one" or anything like that. It should be new category, a new device with defined public.

Why does everyone care so much? Couldn't care less, with respect - so what? :D

Actually many people are woried not because of what you think. One of the Apple velue is quality over price and if there is a cheaper phone without its own particular category and customers it means that Apple sold this value for the market share. Its like 500$ Rolex or 50 000$ Ferrari. Its not posible because the quality of those products defines the price. You cant make a nice Rolex watch for 500$ or true Ferrari sport car for 50 000$. The same way you cant make a quality phone for 300$ non contract. For this price you cant make quartz Rolex, Toyota with Ferrari engine and iPhone without many features....and I dont know what features Apple can sacrafice because every aspect of the iPhone is crucial for the user experiance and indirectly for the product quality.

So its about values, not isnoob for many people and I understand the worry.

Because they love Apple and Apples products?
