I like the yellow one. It'll match my car. Can't wait for these to arrive. I need a new phone, but I refuse to do multiple-year contracts, even if it means getting a premium phone "for free." I'd rather pay the money up front and not be tied to a service provider.

ick.. green .... They better have other colors...

Now, this low cost phone looks just like an Android with the cheap plastic....

I can't believe Apple gave us "a choice" a low cost phones all round in addition to these much better $800 unlocked iPhones...

Then again, it may be smart of Apple, but all i gotta say is, don't expect your iPhone to be anything like mine, cos it won't :) its not glass.

Aesthetic was only one of the reasons why I liked Apple products. When it comes to the iPhone line, I am rather indifferent to type of casing. I don't know the exact figures of those who use protective cover for their iPhones. However, I've seen more with some sort of covers than without. Which leads me to wonder why people care so much about the hidden beauty.

Samsung's newest S4 has an accessory that replaces the battery cover instead of adding another layer. I thought this is a step in the right decision. Instead of buying protective layers to cover and hide the pretty finish(which comes with a price), I would rather like a simple shell which can be replaced with a tougher third-party case.

I don't think Apple will do this. However, plastic or metal, I will most likely be covering it up with some sort of additional protection. If it drives the price down, I'm happy.

Don't really care for the colors shown in OP, but I'm sure there will be more. Guessing that the choice of colors was based on what Apple's marketing team perceives will sell in developing markets. In order to compete with the Nexus 4 and various low cost Android devices, this phone will need to be sold at a much lower margin of profit than Apple's other devices. I suspect that Apple would prefer it's North American and Northern European customers stick with their flagship devices rather than purchase these cheaper phones. I also suspect they'll be sold in Asia and Africa at carrier specific discounted rates, while an unlocked version will be available via Apple.com at an inflated cost (though much lower than the 5s).

The colour iPhone is not intended to be a "cheap" iPhone, it's intended to replace the iPhone 4 which as you say can be bought cheap on contract. It cannot however be bought cheaper on pre-paid pay-as-you-go which is why they need to reduce the manufacturing costs and reduce the price. The iPhone 4 costs £319 unsubsidized - for a 3 year old phone.

I think this is more about a change of strategy than anything else. By moving away from simply selling last years model a bit cheaper to bringing out a whole new model they get to better differentiate the high-end iPhone from the cheaper iPhone.

It's the same policy they use on other products - for example the MBP versus the MBA.

As for cheap and tacky plastic? Well I don't think the millions buying Samsung phones would agree with you on that. I doubt they even care. That's who this phone is targeted at. If you don't like it then you always have the option to buy the aluminium iPhone 5 instead. Choice is good thing IMHO.

This exactly... finally somebody actually get's the whole idea.

since ios 7 comes with new fonts, why should a phone (which will be released alongside) carry a superseded font type? shouldn't it be helvetica neue ultra light as well?

Oh i almost forget, apple had just designed a black trash-can for these:D

White Version

Do you remember this?

Tip for Apple

if you want secrecy, dont put the apple logo on prototypes. Without the logo, this could be any phone, and I think that is the problem. If it is 359$ non contract ill buy it, but only because I cant afford the IPhone 5.

It looks like the first iPhone but all in plastic. Jesus, I want better materials. I hate plastic.

Appleboys "Samsung are stupid for having a cheaper range".....nek minnit.

Yes, Samsung are stupid for having a cheaper range... This is cheap like iPod nano vs iPad touch cheap, not ferrari vs lower end Nissan cheap (BTW the Nissan Vera is about $12,000 and is the cheapest in the US):D

Not sure why everyone is kicking off about plastic phones? If you don't like it, don't buy it - Apple is trying to capture a bigger consumer base, and that includes other people who would love an iPhone but can't afford one. If this comes in at the right price with PAYG options then it'll sell like hot cakes. There are people I know who would love a piece of the Apple pie but settle for £2-250 Android phones because they don't want a £50 a month contract just to have an iPhone.

I foresee these being as popular as the iPad mini if they do come out.

Dat rear shell.

I might pick up a low cost iphone and use it for my secondary line. I like the yellow. But I'm hoping it comes in black.
