It is hard to believe for me that the iphone 3Gs will be the "state of the art" from apple until summer 2010...!!!

Perhaps we will see in a few weeks a special event with Steve - and he presents the iphone 4 ( 3 pro )...

So we get a real iphone family like the macbooks :

- 3G end of life

- 3Gs
- 3Pro

I almost **** my pants from laughing so hard at this.

There's not much the 3GS can do that the 3G can't. Apple is aware that everyone who has a 3G is still in contract. Because of this, they want to save all the fun stuff for when we 3G users are at the end of our contracts, then let loose with the 4th iPhone because there's a bigger consumer demand for it once the 3G contracts expire. Whoever would have bought the iPhone 3GS now is currently stuck in a contract with AT&T.

And another thing: Steve Jobs isn't Jesus Christ. Get over yourself. He's the CEO of a visionary company who runs the company with an iron fist. It gets results. Doesn't mean he's that incredible of a guy.

And the last thing: That would be by far the worst planning Apple ever did in terms of product releases. It would force Apple fanboys such as yourself to throw Jobs to the dogs. That's the last thing Apple wants.

Would be a kick in the nuts if there was a model at Christmas... ALl those guys breaking out of contract for the 3GS and they pop out a 6 month cycle...

I expect an upgrade to the dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor, another ram upgrade and possibly a new GPU in the next update.

Apple put up a job listing looking for a coder familiar with the ARM structure. I assume this means Apple intends to continue with their processors.

Not to mention, we saw the iPhone 3.1 listing in the latest firmwares, indicating Apple will yet again up the processor.

The ram is just a guess, but not far out there.

With the dual core processor I'd expect to see:

1) A significant battery upgrade (removable?)

2) More end user features, multi-tasking, background apps etc

3) a new OLED screen, with capability of HD resolutions

4) front facing camera (this is a bit of a stretch :D)

There is no way in heck.

You remember what happened when they reduced the price of the iPhones after a couple of months? Imagine what would happen if they released a new phone in just a couple of week.

They need to come out with an iTouch, iPod, or iPhone featuring Bruce Springsteen and make it Red, White and Blue.

Hey they did it for U2, and the Beatles, why not an American Icon as far as music goes. I would buy it, especially if it had all of his music pre-loaded or included the CD's like the Beatles one did.

Nope. You people have it all wrong. Steve is apparently very hands-on, but from what I've read, he understands his role in the company. Especially now that he's close to retirement, Apple aren't going to hold off big announcements just to stroke his ego.

It is important for Apple that Steve is not seen as essential. The best way to do that is to make his absence as low-key an affair as possible and to avoid massive showboating when he returns.

Stop being so desperate.

I agree. People (fanboys) have to give up with Steve's-gonna-jump-out-of-a-cake BS. It's not going to happen. They're not going to turn him into a circus side-show. They are not going to drag him out just to pimp some new products.

You people forget just how much Apple owes to Steve. He hauled a company on its knees and brought it to the pinnacle of the technology market.

Possible 2nd iPhone upgrade later in the year?? thoughts??

What do people think to the possibility of a 2nd update to the iPhone maybe later in the year?

It would be cool to think that something came of the rumours that had been circulating relating to a front facing camera and slight asthetic changes..

Maybe Steve Jobs could reveal it when he comes back???

Amazingly unlikely. Imagine you bought out your contract now, bought a new iPhone and then in 4 months there's another new one? There'd be riots in the street.

And people also said there won't be a price drop on the 1st gen for a year.

What happened about 2? months later?

That was Apple's first year in the cell phone business. They even acknowledge the mistake with store credit to those customers. New model will be next Summer 2010.

And if the question was "will there be an iPhone price drop?" then this fact might have something to do with that.

But that's not what he asked.

The only mid-cycle upgrade that the iPhone has seen was a memory bump. That's always possible, but I think 64 GB chips are going to be too expensive for quite some time, so I don't see any chance of that happening.

Not sure about this year, but in 2010 and beyond, in order to stay competitive, Apple may need two refreshes per year instead of one. The smartphone market is just taking off and over the next few years there will be more legitimate competitors (like Palm Pre) from a variety of manufacturers, some of which aren't even in the game yet like Dell and MS (hardware).

Just as Apple gives a spec boost to its computers about twice a year, I believe the advancements in phone technology will dictate semiannual (albeit incremental) updates.

While its true Apple could pump out a new rev every 6 months, there is no point. A contract is 24 months long, so that would mean the iPhone would go through 4 revisions in the time you are ready to upgrade. Thats way too many. Give Apple a year to refine and produce a quality product. Rushed releases never end well.

Besides most features are done within Apple's software update. New hardware/designs will be done annually. Just like the iPod. It's worked for them for YEARS! Why would they change their business tactics??

APPLE iPhone is like the biggest rock star or movie star right now. No need to come out with new CD or new movie every 6 months. One a year is plenty enough to maintain its status.
