I've also experienced the same issue. The first one was discolored in the top right corner. I exchanged it. Now this new one is discolored as well. Half of it is yellowish, the other half is blueish.

I believe all these new iPads are the same. There's no quality control at Apple. I'm returning mine as I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to convince Apple store employees that there's something wrong.

Upside, I'll save myself hundreds of bucks and stick with a working iPad 2.

This experience left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Every iPad 3 I have looked at has had some kind of screen backlighting variance. I thought I'd give up and go and buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab. But when I went to the store and had a play I realised that it's just another kind of compromise. The Galaxy Tab display while uniform white is just not near as good and the OS is typically choppy Android.

So I'll choose the screen variance on the iPad I think. And if it gets worse or really starts to bug me I can always take it back during the warranty period.

Bit of a shame but to be honest life is a bit about compromise anyway. And the one I have is perfect apart from a slight blue tinge at the bottom of the screen in portrait. The one in my local PC World had disgusting yellow sploges.

Well looks like I'm done with my second swap I'll just return it and get my money back..called the apple store near me guy was rude..i told him i want to get my money back..he was oh yellowing is not a problem blah blah blah we can't keep swapping it out..never going to that apple store again even it's close to my home and I have to pay 6$ toll.. they have lots of new iPads in stock everywhere but I'll wait it out a month or so and stick with my iPad 2..going to try out that NOTE:D see if I like it..

The store I dealt with was actually pretty cool about it. They all but admitted that, yeah, it was a problem.

My original iPad 3 had a perfect pure white uniform screen and no backlight bleeding but had a dead pixel :(

Took it to the Apple store which is a 50min drive one way for me, the genius noticed the dead pixel and replaced it. Checked it in store, no dead pixels, and under the store lighting looked great.

Took it home and noticed 30% of the top in portrait mode was dirty yellow  :(

This is very visible when in landscape mode and more so when the keyboard is up as it's yellow up until the G key and perfect gray on the rest, very distracting. So now I have to travel all the way back once again. Their costing me a fortune in fuel and parking due to faulty hardware and their pathetic quality control, no other manufacturer gives me these issues on any device and 99% of the time work perfectly the first time for me.

Have tried leaving the brightness on 100% while playing graphic intense games like Real Racing 2 and Air Supremacy to see if it did anything to the yellow, the iPad got very hot as did the screen but over the course of 3 days has made no difference to the yellowing :(

Well there are some perfect screens out there! Took my third one back to the Apple Store and at last, no pink, no blue and no yellow. Just white and brighter too. So my advice is keep trying.

And all the ones I checked in the Apple Store were perfect too. And the one I now have is Build Week 7 - as have two of the others been. No no rhyme or reason it seems.

The Apple Store coleague saw the problem as soon as I showed him - and no push back. I wonder if they no it's a problem. Said he had not seen any others though.

Good to hear. Congrats!

How is the screen uniformity when you split the on-screen keyboard in portrait as well as landscape, do both sides (especially the shift keys) look the same in both orientations? Or is one noticably more blue/yellow/dim than the other one? Or is it totally even however you hold it?

Totally even every way now - thankfully. The one I have has a wee divot out of the edge of the casing but once it's in a case it's gone. And the screen is perfect in every way so this is a keeper!

Mine is more yellow on the left ESP towards the top. It's very faint but you can see it with the keyboard keys. It seems like its gotten a little better since I got it. I may give it a couple more weeks before I exchange it. I was going to get one from the apple store and keep the best of the two but all the stores in the bay area are unavailable. No backlight bleed, bad pixels etc.

Mine faded into a yellow-green at the upper half (oriented with home button at the bottom). I exchanged mine today and I felt like a punk, just because I know that enough Apple employees are getting to deal with a few customers coming in to exchange again and again, and while I felt that it was worth trying out a new model, I also hate to come across as the same level of nit-picky

Now I have my second one, and this screen now fades into more of a pinkish hue instead of yellow-green (ha!). The brighter side is that my previous one also had a single dead pixel - but I didn't think that was reason enough alone to return it. This new one seems fine in that regard.

So yeah, not really an improvement for the uneven tinting. This issue has left me feeling a little sour toward Apple, but this is still such a better screen to look at than my iPad 2 (which was fine, by its own standard). I'll probably keep this one.

Is there a time limit for swapping out faulty iPad's? I know you have 14 days to return it, but does that also apply to getting replacements for hardware issues like a defective screen?

Could it be heat related

I am on my second iPad and seeing the same warm left side with greater intensity in the lower left (button on bottom). But this also seems to follwo the heat signature of the ipad. It is warmer on the left side and warmest in the lower left quadrant.

I'm not sure if I have a tint problem but when viewing in landscape mode and tilting the iPad to the left, I notice a little bit of pink and when tilting it to the right theres green. Does anyone else have this?

I have this same problem.....not really sure if this is what everyone talks about

I just noticed that my new iPad 3 has this problem: the left top corner of the screen is a little bit darker than the right top corner. Actually all the left side along edge is a bit darker.

When I open the Safari, I can see the color of the search bar at both ends are not consistent. But when I rotate to the right, they seem to be the same, which can prove the the color is not consistent from life to right in the portrait mode.

No issues here as well.

By the way you guys should feel lucky that apple exchanges the products, here in Greece something similar will never and never happened.

There are good iPads out there!!!

I had yellow tinting on the 1/3 top portion of my screen when in portrait mode (towards the FaceTime camera). It was very subtle but very annoying. I kept it for a week to see if it goes away but didn't notice any drastic change. So I went to the Apple store yesterday...

BTW, I've already had to exchange the iPad I purchased on release day because of a very minor cosmetic blemish. So... I was frustrated to have encountered this yellow tinting on the second one.

Having given up, I decided to return it and get my money back and get a MacBook Air instead. At the Apple Store, without even mentioning my problem with the iPad, the specialist had no hesitation in giving my money back. However, I had to point out my problem with the screen. She took a look at it (I'm not sure if she saw what I was talking about) but her response was "It happens. We want you to be happy and we're willing to give you another one that'll make you happy."

I REALLY wanted an iPad so... I walked out of the Apple store with my third one.
I come home and it's PERFECT! No cosmetic blemishes. No weird uneven tinting. Perfect.

:) :) :)

At this moment, I'm on my third iPad typing this post and happy as can be and glad that I gave it chance. There are good iPads out there!!! Don't give up!

I have the same problem... yellow top in portrait mode. I am sorry if I am just ignorant, but how do you deduce the "Buld Week' from the serial number? Thanks.

Very uneven tint, upper part (toward the webcam) is pink, bottom part slightly green (though that may just be a contrast to the pink on the other side). Very annoying. Unfortunately there are no 64 GB iPad's with Verizon available in Apple's retail stores, so I can't return it unless I wait for a replacement in the mail.

I went through six before giving up. All had some variation of yellowing, green, pink or greyish colors. Every single one of them was uneven in some way or color. One had a dead pixel. I decided to get off the exchange roller coaster. Buying quality should not be this stressful.

I know that there must be perfect screens out there. I'm just shocked that I went through six that had problems. I guess that I'm not meant to get a good one.

Enter the serial number here.

Congrats! You need to start a perfect screen iPad photo gallery! Are you from the US? And which size and color did you buy? Not that it makes a difference, just curious.

I've had mine for about a week.

My ipad screen was initially tinted yellow on the top third and tinted pink on the bottom third. I called Apple and they said to restore and if that didn't fix it, to send it in for a replacement.

Anyway. After a restore and a recharge and some usage, the pink is more of the issue for me. The yellow I am not as bothered by.

However, the bottom pink remains. I wonder if it will go away. Its very faint, but it's still of concern since my main use for the ipad is reading on a white background. If its changed at all its gotten better not worse, or that might be me getting used to it.

I feel it gets worse with a bit of heat or runtime. Up to a faint level.

I also have a section of my backlight that bleeds completely through if you tilt the ipad and look at extreme angle. Not that big of a deal, but an indication of poor craftsmanship, poor QC, etc.

This is nothing compared to buying an LCD or Plasma TV. You want to see uniformity issues and panel lottery, have a look at any Edge Lit LED. At least Apple isn't just saying "within spec" and not exchanging.

I wonder if it would be better to just buy AppleCare and wait it out for a bit. See if Apple comes up with something or usage of the screen will sort this out. I don't know. I'm most likely just going to send it in next week for a replacement.

I've heard of yellow tint fading over time for some. I've never come across anyone saying that any of the other colors went away. I considered going the route of Apple Care. In the end though, I couldn't justify spending any more money for the possible guarantee of something that I should be able to get for no more money than I already spent. Screens are all over the place with this thing, and that's not how it shold be. There should be very little variance between each iPad rollling off he assembly line. Perhaps if it was Apple's policy to exchange as many units as needed to get the customer one that is acceptable to him/her, I'd have bought from the Apple store, and continued to work on getting a good one (even though it should not be work). But they seem to cut off exchanges as some arbitrary number.

For me, the problem is that I REALLY wanted a new iPad. I spent four months looking forward to it. When I got it, I really enjoyed the resolution difference between it and the iPad1/iPad2. Tiny text on web pages was crisp and clear. That's the only reason I put myself through so many exchanges. But I really hate returning open boxed items, and I got sick of stressing about it.

I got my first iPad on launch day and it had a tint. So I returned and waited for 2 weeks. Got my new one yesterday and this one also has a tint.as well. Not as much though 1/2 to 1/3. I hope the next one is fine.
