Still struggling with this. But just because it's my nature to wrestle with the question, rather than a need to figure it out RIGHT NOW...I don't expect to upgrade tomorrow. But I do expect to do so in the next few months.
Anyway, right off the bat, my inclination is to get the 13 mini. The only reason I am considering the 13 Pro is for the telephoto lens. I'd say on my DSLR I'm shooting through my zoom lens about 90 percent of the time. I would love to get that telephoto on my phone. But that means I'm spending to get a lot more things that (though I'm sure I would like) I don't feel the need to spend for.
But then as I was reading about it, I came to the understanding that the telephoto lens is not a zoom lens, it's a fixed-focal-length lens. So that means, if the telephoto is 3x, then you're getting purely optical zoom at 3x. But if you choose to shoot at 2.5x, then you are using digital zoom (in this case, zooming out instead of zooming in, I think). If I'm to make use of the telephoto, and if I am trying to avoid digital zoom, I'll have to be OK with exactly 3x.
At that point, it can make some sense to try to find a 12 pro instead of a 13: A 2x might be more versatile than a 3x. But then I give up the couple other features I liked from yesterday: the cinema mode and the better battery. I could get both of those if I simply get the 13 or 13 mini. So...
--Just telephoto lens? 12 Pro
--Better battery and cinema mode, punt on the telephoto? 13 mini
--Better battery and cinema mode, and telephoto, but most expensive (and bulkiest)? 13 Pro.
No doubt I'll be sitting with this for some time, lol.
