Thanks, it really does look good. I used to have the 11" but switched to a rMBP for the better screen. I've wanted to switch back for the portability ever since, looks like I finally can without losing retina :)
My 2012 Air has a truly lousy screen. They may have been slightly improved since then but the IPS retina puts the old screens to shame. I can't blame you for switching. I almost did the same but didn't want the extra weight.

Comparison photos are fun. I might do some more soon. Any suggestions?

Both with displays set at 50% and keyboards set at 80% brightness.

Great photo. Shows that the extra inch is pretty much exactly where you'd want it from the 11" Air, i.e. vertically. I would have had an 11" Air a couple of years back but for the screen quality and the vertical height of it is just too small. Making the screen larger and the computer smaller is just a bonus I wasn't expecting with the MB...

is the MB so yellow as on the pictures or you forgot some collor correction

That last one is flash bouncing off the ceiling so its illuminated completely. they all are with ceiling bounce but..

it doesn't always look like that.

resolution comparison

I'm not sure how this will translate across the internets but I'm attempting to show the difference in resolution between the 11" MBA (left) and the 12" rMB. Stare at the one on the left all day and you'll think you need new glasses.

[edit] Unfortunately, it seems you have to look at the photo on a retina display to see much difference.

I never understood the point of a retina display on a computer. Isn't "retina" supposed to mean that the pixels arent distinguishable at normal viewing distances? Well guess what, I cant see the pixels on my 11' air.

I'd be curious as to your age and if you need new glasses. I'm 59 and can clearly see the pixels and resulting blurriness of the MacBook Air and any computer screen of similar resolution, from normal viewing distance.

The blurriness is caused by the applied anti-aliasing which is necessary to keep small text from looking jagged. High resolutions screens have been a long time coming. It's about time!

Makes me want to never look at my 11" MBA screen again, but, alas, I must until my new rMB arrives.

Definitely dont need glasses, never have needed them. Perhaps I cant see the pixels because I can view from alot further away while still being able to see everything fine.

From my six plus the air looks blurry. Retina just clears things up so much. The MacBook Air from a fair distance still looks blurry, even though the pixels are not distinguishable (and I'm talking distance here) the text is blurry, on retina everything is sharp.

That's a good point.

I typically view my notebook screen, usually on my lap, from about 20 inches away. My desktop screen is more like 24-30 inches away. If I move back to more than 36 inches, it is harder for me to to see the pixels on "standard" displays. But I don't want to be that far back.

i don't think gold is too fem to be honest.

im a dude and i own no other 'gold' and i'm digging it. as always on here ymmv

Lol.

Wandering into Starbucks with brand new tiny Macbook -- several cool points.

Walking around the Starbucks table taking photos of your Macbook on it -- minus eight million cool points.

(had to laugh, sorry... at least it looks like there weren't many other people there) :D

Well this is about pics "in the wild". Posting pics from home is boring, I prefer location photo shoots :)
