Yeah, FaceBook is a crappy site and runs bad on anything. I don't expect to ever use it on a PPC. If for some reason I need to I just load the mobile site.
Youtube actually plays on webkit most of the time. But I don't consider that a solution as I haven't seen a webkit update in over a year; probably won't continue to work much longer.

@Project Alice
If you go to touch.facebook.com it will load the mobile version, which works really well and fast on both Tenfourfox and WebKit (in WebKit you can even watch fb videos without problems). BTW it is not true that WebKit has not had an update in a year, last update was just a few months ago.

I know, I said I use mobile FB on PPCs if I have to use it.

And about webkit, I went to their sourceforge and saw that it said it was updated. That must mean the built in updater doesn't work, because it's always identified itself as the latest version, and I have it on a couple macs that I've had for years.

I found that too. Leopard WebKit won’t update from within the application. I’d suggest we check the sourceforge page every once in a while and if you or anyone else spots a new version, feel free to share the news of the update on the forums here for all of us to go download a copy.

For such a bland looking service, Facebook (and Google Docs) are seriously heavy on the client-side resources. When a multi-billion dollar web service can provide a smooth, feature rich, yet lightweight mobile version, but has a heavy, bloated desktop equivalent, it makes you wonder why they don’t just redesign using the mobile version as a basis for a faster and overall more enjoyable user experience on the base/common platform... is optimization no longer a part of the development process?

Latest acquisition 1.5GHz PBG4 12". Everything stock so far. Came without a hard drive (and a few screws) but now up and running.

HDD installation on a 12 inch PowerBook? brave man! :)

a 12 inch PowerBook is one of those I still need to add to my collection, (but I have not really been looking recently due to life stuff)

Why has this thread become a facebook discussion?

I have a good solution to facebook... don't use it.

This thread is 3 years old and has veered off topic a couple times. I don't think 3 replies counts as "becoming a facebook discussion".

For the record the main reason I use that cesspool of a site is for the large Mac groups, and car groups.
I'd post another About window to get back on-topic, but I'm at work and this is being typed on a Dell running Windows 7. lol

This site is a Mac group, and there are lots of car sites with forums and photo sharing.

Tossed a spare 80gb drive in the pmac-g5, so now it boots 10.4, 10.5 and...

Cheers

Cool theme did you build it yourself or can one download that theme?

Here's what my Desktop looks like on my PowerBook G4 Early 2005 with the Leopard Rebirth Theme. I also have Tiger installed on a second partition with the Tiger Sierra Theme which I also very like, maybe I post that later.

BTW: Does anybody know how I can modify the false version number that is shown on "About This Mac". Clearly it should state 10.5.8 and not 10.12.4. I suspect this is due to the theme but is there an easy fix to show the correct version number?

Thanks. It's a hodge podge. Because i had installed lubuntu vs ubuntu mate, it didn't come with any OSX icons or themes. The icons are from macbuntu, the openbox window border, that i scoured the web for, is called ArcOSX, the GTK theme is Raleigh, the dock is Plank, the conky theme i modified to my liking from one i found on the web, and wallpaper was also found on the web.

Cheers

IIRC, this is set in /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

It’s not that bad truth be told but for the $$ they’re fetching I would rather buy something else.

Power Mac G5 that I think I got for $50 on Craigslist. Any tips for optimizing performance on one of these? I realize it's super old, but I see videos of people running YouTube on this in modern times.o_O

Welcome to a very fun rabbit hole of a forum. :) I occasionally use 720P Youtube on my single-core 1.67 GHz G4 so your G5 will scream by comparison. I generally stick to 480P though on my machine since 720P demands pretty much all of the CPU.

Check out this thread for (one of) the most efficient ways to use Youtube:
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ew-mactubes-mobile-youtube-installer.2030035/
And this is probably the easiest way:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/tenfivetube-yet-another-youtube-option.2103937/

These are far from the only methods, but they're the two I use the most.
