Not gonna lie, that coverage viewer is full of crap. Says my area is covered in 3G but my zip code is not even covered by AT&T anymore...

I'm not going to say the map is perfect, but this idea of having people list where their coverage is great is only going to result in a thread for each of the >500 cities in the US.

Boston and suburbs north and west: calls never dropped, EDGE very slow (but it's EDGE... so what do you expect). I can comment on 3G on Friday. ;)

In most parts of orange county reception is great! Im in Laguna Niguel and reception at home is always full bars, as well as in the Newport Beach area. There is ONE area in Irvine (Shady Canyon area) where there is almost no reception for both Verizon and AT&T. 3G is decent, though I rarely use my bandwidth testing app (Speedtest.net app) to actually check 3G speeds because they're usually mediocre at best, and Im actually on wi-fi 90% of the time anyway. I look forward to testing out the new higher speed 3G service when its available in my area in ......who knows when.

NYC - Okay voice, crap 3G. Speeds hover around 100kbps, and that's if you don't get bumped down to EDGE. Any neighborhood with a generally younger demographic is a total crapshoot.

Excellent point. Like Union Square? Good luck.
If I didn't have an AirPort I might have to move ;)

Philly suburbs, PA - Decent. Some dropped calls. Call quality can be iffy at time.

At Phillies games last year, the internet wouldnt even load on 3G sometimes, but I believed they have updated some of the towers over there and it is fine now.

Mission, Texas

I seem to get really good reception, and decent 3G speeds. Never had a random dropped call, although i have had some where I have 1 or 2 bars of reception and then i move to an area with no service. This usually only happens indoors in places like schools, or the mall. Call quality is decent most of the time, on occasion it'll be pretty bad.

Over all, on a scale of 1-10, i'd give it a 7.

New Orleans, LA and surrounding suburbs...

Call Quality = Great
Internet on 3G = Outstanding

In my time living here, I'd say 3 dropped calls in 3 1/2 years and those were during the hurricane evacuations (lots of call traffic)

What is reception like in San Diego? The AT&T map shows excellent 3g coverage, but I have heard both positive and negative things about coverage in San Diego.

Excellent in North County from La Jolla to Oceanside. Inland is spotty in places due to terrain. I don't go South of La Jolla too much, except the airport so I can't say much, other than I haven't had a problem.

In my area there are tons of repeaters on lamp poles so it is hard to find anything below 5 bars.

I guess I'm the only one who think NYC = Excellent? For GPS, heck no. But data is fine for me.

That's quite possible. :D Whereabouts in the city are you? Might also depend on your surfing/downloading habits, I'm a pretty heavy user. But even my non-nerd friends complain about it.

NYC is excellent as well.

Are you high? NYC has terrible AT&T service.

I was browsing the web walking down 2nd Ave. on Friday when all of a sudden Safari stopped loading pages, then it took about a minute until my "5 bars" dropped to zero and then up to 5 again as it hit another tower.

Columbia, sc surprisingally has a pretty big 3g network and the Internet is always fast but if your driving in the car and talking on the phone your going to have a dropped call atleast once a week. Dropped calls are nottiat big of a deal to me. I'm happy to have Internet everywhere.

I spend a lot of time in Denver CO, and Charlotte NC. Both are 3G and both get good signal strength in most places.

Unfortunately, like most places I've been, I would not call AT&T coverage great. Lots of small areas with poor or no coverage resulting in missed or dropped calls as you pass through them. Several times a week even in places that say coverage is ok (2 or more bars) you'll get a missed call or voicemail where the phone never actually rang.

I've had the same experience with several phones (not just the iPhone) and in many cities unfortunately its the AT&T network.

I sincerely hope Apple does not renew AT&T's exclusive contract next year. I'd try t-mobile in a heartbeat, and if the next iPhone was CDMA and GSM, I'd be on Verizon. The iPhone has gotten AT&T a lot of business, but I think at this point, other carriers could help iPhone sales.
