In trying to guess when the refresh is coming, we have a major blind spot in my opinion. From an Apple Inc. financial point of view, there is a tag of war between

(1) delaying the refresh in order to take advantage of increased profit margin associated with selling last year's technologies and components (which have come down in price dramatically) at a fixed price and

(2) lost revenue from warehoused customers holding back from purchasing until a refresh. What we (none of us) know is precisely how many iMacs are selling right now.

I suspect the average Mr Joe Public doesn't even know there's a refresh coming nor would they know - or care - the difference between Sandy, Ivy or Waterloo bridge. So they are still buying.

That's big bucks to Apple. The tail end of a product cycle is the most profitable.

On the Japanese Apple Store website the imacs, macbook pros and macbook airs are all on discount until May 22nd.

Link is here. It says it is a 'back to school' promotion, a bit odd as the schools went back several weeks ago.

May 22nd sounds like the day when the imac will be updated, no?

In high street stores a couple of weeks ago I noticed substantial discounts on the imac models too (10% off plus 10% back in store points).

But why would Apple end the promotion on the refresh day and not the day befofe? Unless wed 23 is release

Because of time differences it'll be the 23rd in Japan.............but still the 22nd in California.

Who knows? I just noticed this promotion today and thought I'd throw it in the mix as it sounded a bit odd.

Guess this is the best hint towards a May release we have.

I understand your first point, but it only makes sense if the 2011 iMacs they are currently selling were recently manufactured. If they were built last year, it doesn't make sense.

Update:

inWarehouse.se/Komplett.se which is a big reseller in Sweden were out of stock of one model, and a new shipment was due for May 11th, this has now changed to May 18th, and only x2 are coming in then. Not sure if they keep this low amount of stock usually, but only 2 machines in one shipment does sound a little puny.

hmm interesting, maybe may 22nd is the day unless may 15th is and that retailer has a few days delay for arrival

It would help if the poster could read Japanese!

There are no discounts on any of the products listed above, unless you are a student, and all are in stock. The campaign linked to states:

いよいよ5月22日まで、学生のみなさんが新しいMacを購入すると、1万円分のアプリケーションや音楽などがついてきます。

Literally meaning:
Finishing on the 22nd of May, all students can obtain JPY10,000 worth of applications or music (from iTunes or the app store) when you buy a new Mac.

Now, seeing as my my iMac is on its last legs, I too am waiting with baited breath for the release.

A quick look in the T&C's, one can see this campaign has been running from early February, hence we are coming to the end of the campaign for the start of the school year.

I suppose it's not too much to ask that those posting get their facts right before posting...

Just out of interest, is there a specific reason (other than it's far out) that the 29th May has attracted on 5% of the votes in the poll? I personally see that date as likely as the 22nd unless someone knows a reason ruling the 29th out?

I agree.

The other point is that all of this only holds true in a closed (i.e. without competition) market. Apple is like that to an extent - in the same way that other premium brands like maybe BMW have devout followers who will buy no matter what. But Apple is not in a total bubble. As the hardware starts to look more and more tired and uncompetitive, sales will start to drop off. I really can't imagine they are selling many MBP's or Pros right now as a result. There's always pressure to update to latest and greatest tech to keep the market interested.

Talking to a mate today who works for an apple reseller, they had 10 units of each in stock which is there normal level. He said there were no stock restraints currently.
This made me sad. I think we are starting to look more and more likely for June.

Custom orders are still showing 2-4 days

Stock has been dwindling at some locations

Apple wont wait for each and every reseller to be at 0

To wait on 2-4 shipping for anther 4.5 weeks is not like Apple + the refresh does not seem worthy of WWDC event. Notebooks maybe but imac mbp for June qtr. sales need to occur in May June, so the last week of June makes little financial sense in terms of June qtr outlook.

Im done with guessing with 1000 reseller stores, hard to tell. MacMall Amazon BestBuy and Apple shipping times are worth looking at

Competitors are announcing, shipping or will ship in may new machines. So apple likely wont fall too much behind seeing imac is over a year old

New imac in early june seems too close to wwdc + distract its substance, so once mothers day is over / apples m day promotion then i see the imac any Tues/Wed in May

Im willing to bet if i could that A) imac wont have retina yet B) holding off until late summer is goofy

IMHO

Whoah take it easy, I didn't look at it too closely. I got an e-mail from the Apple Store saying this promotion ends on May 22nd, I didn't realise it had been ongoing since February.......

I got the same email a few weeks back too. Glanced over it for a few seconds. Understood from the above paraphrase ( いよいよ) that this was the climax of an ongoing campaign.

I've no problem with you posting information about the status of Mac's in Japan, however your contribution was so far off the mark I had to correct you as this is misleading to others who can't read the content for themselves.

On another note, speaking to sales staff from the likes of Bic Camera and Nojima et al, they had discounted the full range of iMac, MBP's and Mac Mini some weeks back, but wouldn't give a specific reason as to why other than toki-doki (occasionally).

Everybody knows a refresh is coming, but can't speculate when it will be!

I just got the e-mail yesterday, like you say I guess if I'd looked at it closer it was just reminding folk the campaign will end soon.

Only one store in my small town sells macs and they are fairly heavily discounted right now, the staff had no idea about any refresh though.........in fact they said I should check the Apple website............

I´ve read in a page(http://www.iphone-magazine.de/macbook-pro-2012-imac-2012-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-juli-15741/) (german) that´s exist new rumors from an Apple Insider. He says that apple will release the Macbooks and the Imacs within one month( mid/end July), togehter with the release of ML.

I hope and strongly believe their are wrong, because it doesn´t make sense to release a lot of products together and stall the release of the imac.

Edit: Ok I´ve read the Source and it´s Mactrast.com and the source is unreliable, so the hope wins :D

Doesn't make sense to release a whole range of products at the same time. Apple products as standalones are almost prohibitively expensive for a lot of their customers, yet they manage to go the extra mile to buy one at a time.

I for one would like to buy an iMac as well as update my 2009 macbook pro, but theres no way in hell I can buy both at the same time, and by the time I save for the macbook pro it will be time to wait for the 2013 refresh ...

Just makes no sense to me .... Maybe it's just me though
