But I thought the argument is that nobody wanted 16GB, and it will ruin Apple's sales/business.
So which is it?
Most people do not realize why they have run out of space suddenly. They don't even know what difference will it make if the default storage is 32 GB. Quite a few of the iPhones are gifted by friends and family. So people tend to gift lowest tier to save money.

The real argument is that having 16 GB entry level model in 2016 is damn sneaky move bordering unethical only because people have this blind faith in everything Apple does. It's Apple so it has to be good right? The Apple store employees are also trained to convince/force 16GB purchasers to opt for iCloud subscription.

It is a damn great business strategy. We at Macrumors can critically analyze it and comment on it. But regular joe is indifferent to it.

Unethical? Maybe you should look at the meaning of that word again.
The one that have "blind faith" are the ones here complaining about 16GB yet still buys them anyway.

So many masochists here. :D

Unethical because Apple comes across as taking advantage of clueless buyers.

16GB is far too less. Most people these days fill up that much space with 4k videos, live photos and bloated apps. Among my friend circle, I have yet to come across a person who is fine with 16 GB these days. You can't call them masochists. That is an insulting word to use. Sometimes budget does not permit or there is a wide price gap between 16 and 64 gb variants.

The only thing Apple has going for it is the laughable competition from Android handsets.
If Android handset is a looker, it will have poor software update policy.
If it has good build quality, it will come bloated and will have crucial feature omission
If it is a nexus device with good software update and build quality, it will loose out on customer care and QA assurance.
So any given android will miss out on 1-2 things that are crucial for hassle free experience.

Samsung has definitely upped their game when it comes to Galaxy S7. But owing to nature of their Touchwiz and how it is deeply integrated into stock android code, they fail on providing timely software updates. The galaxy S7 Edge is definitely a better looker compared to plain-jane iPhone 6S Plus.

Apple's models are definitely build to last. People get attracted to that but get burned in storage dept.

Alright, let me get this straight. You seem to say that Apple is superior in software update policy, overall great feature set, and great customer care, yet you still think Apple to be an unethical company simply because of the availability of 16 GB base model?

So basically you don't value software update policy, great feature set, nor great customer care. Seems like all you want is better money per GB, since Apple is unethical. Then why aren't you going for those Android phones then?

Again, I am confused.

Don't hold my word against me. Did I mention this was affecting me?

I went for 64 gb model and I was not on budget so it did not affect me. But this is the general consensus of people who buy 16 gb models. I am not saying from my own arse but it is a summation of continuous observation of complaints about 16 gb.

Whether it is right for those people to bitch about 16 gb models or it is right for Apple to cotinue with their (now getting old) business strategy of selling entry level models at 16 gb.

That answer is for you to decide.

I don't understand why this arguement is still going on. Lots of people get by just fine with 16GB. If you need more, buy more. Apple doesn't owe you anything. If the products don't meet your needs, go and look for something that does.

If you can build a better phone than Apple and make a profit at it, go right ahead. Other manufacturers try beating Apple with more storage, faster processors, more RAM. Some may even sell more devices, but they don't make more profit.

If you want to use iOS, these are your choices. Apple has always been about using less RAM and storage, and optimizing the software and hardware. It was true long before they ever made a phone. Apple will increase the minimum storage, some day, when they feel it is the right time.

My gripe with Apple is that if they are going to offer 16GB then they also need to offer 128GB on that same product line. This is where they are not consistent, the SE just release comes with 16GB but not 128GB. It makes no sense to me. There GB allowance is very fragmented across product lines and needs to be more uniform for the customers to choose what space they want. I need 128GB for the SE but Apple won't offer that makes no sense to me.
