Apple will continue to sell it because profit margins. The entry level 16GB option sells the best and will continue to be well into 2020. There's no escape. If less people opted for it and instead purchased the next in line 64GB version then Apple may reconsider.

I will be buying a new phone in the next week or so because I'm switching carriers and can either take a $500 subsidy or leave it if I keep my old phone.

I have a galaxy S4 (when I upgraded from the iPhone 4S, my only important feature was the larger screen). My wife currently has an iPhone 6S+.

I admit I absolutely hate Android (or is it Samsung's Touchwiz crap). But I hate Apple's outdated hardware and software. I'm trying to decide between an S7 edge 32 gig or an iPhone 6S+ 64 gig. The android is $70 cheaper from my carrier, but the price difference is a minor issue. It feels like there are only bad choices on the apple and android side.

The screen on the android is absolutely stunning, graphics are just beautiful and when I put it next to the iPhone 6S+, the iPhone looks like last decade's refuse. Looking at the OSes side by side, android looks sleek, smooth, and modern with it's widgets, slide out panels, etc. And the lack of a hardware back button on the iphone feels like a missing appendage at this point. Split screen multitasking works amazingly well on the S7 as well. iPhone has fallen so far behind in hardware quality and basic functionality I feel bad for Apple.

But the android is so full of bloat, a lot of the controls actually feel clunky and convoluted, and so much basic stuff is hidden in non-obvious ways that I think the iPhone is much easier to use. I also am a big fan of the sort of security Apple has on their iPhones. I don't even really install Apps on android anymore because I hate the messages like "this App will download your address book to the software publisher, take it or leave it." I know Apple isn't perfect, but I do have confidence they screen out a lot of the apps that try to do that on their phones.

They know there is more demand for the 64 and 128 gig models. But by making the base model useless, they encourage people to pay an extra $100 or 200 for $5 or $10 worth of flash memory.

If a 32 gig model existed as the base model for the same price, they'd sell a lot more of those and lose all their extra profits.
I don't think it is as simple as that. If there's no demand for the 16GB (as you said it is useless), then Apple wouldn't make one as it will be sitting in inventory. If there is more demand on the 64GB and 128GB, that means their pricing also fits as the market sees those prices to be acceptable. Apple runs its supply chain and channels fairly tight, especially on iPhones.

Regardless, it's very very simple. If people live in a country where the only smartphone available is the 16GB iPhone, then I understand the outrage. It's well warranted. Thing is, most of us at least live in a place where there are plenty of great alternatives. Thus it makes no sense to complain about 16GB iPhone AND yet buy it anyway, unless one is a twisted masochist.

Will the next storage tier be priced $50 or $100 more then? I can't imagine Apple pricing the SE too high (>$600), even for the max storage option.

For the people who say 16 GB is useless.

I disagree. Some people don't need more than that, and would be happy with 8 GB as well. I for example only use my phone for the basic stuff, that will sync with my Mac or iPad: iMessages, Calendar, Reminders, Notes… some Safari here and there (and saved Bookmarks) and phoning of course, but that does not take up space. Other things like the alarm clock, the weather app or nearby restaurants don't take space either.

I don't play games nor do I carry my 100,000 photos with me on my iPhone. If I want to show people photos, then I show them properly on my iPad.

The iPhone for me is all about iCloud. Syncing stuff when I'm on the go, so I can view these when I'm on the Mac or the iPad. Who needs 128 or 256 GB on an iPhone? I will never understand it unless you're a hardcore gamer and you like to use Pages, Numbers or PhotoShop on your tiny little screen. (yes, 6s + is tiny as well compared to a Mac or iPad screen)

Sounds like you don't listen to music much...my iTunes library is 75GB and yes I want that with me at all times. Think outside the box.

As of today, a new iPhone 6S 16GB UNLOCKED is available in India for as low as 604$s inclusive of taxes, shipping, warranty and all. In the US the base price for unlocked phone is 650$s. Plus are the taxes. What does this tell about the Apple's business today? 1. There was a time when people used to say that Apple doesn't sell iPhone cheaper than the price in US. Now it is not. 2. Indians are not buying iPhone 6S with 16GB excreta memory. 3. Other models are selling great, still the prices are coming down closer and closer to the US price.
This is all, when Apple is yet to start manufacturing in India.

The 16GB is really damaging their business.
If they continue doing that, this year will see at least a huge dip in their regular business.

Luckily for you, Apple does make 128GB iPhones.
Even better, the latest Galaxy brings back SD card support. Sony Xperia phones also support SD card.
So I guess you can buy what you want, right?

1. India manufacturing. Got nothing to do with the topic, but if an Indian company can offer the scale that Foxconn can, I'm sure Apple would look into it.
2. If the 16GB is damaging their business, then Apple would not make 16GB models anymore. I mean why make things that are damaging your business? Makes no sense. And we will see if your claim that Apple's business will see a huge dip this year. We'll see.

Tim Cook will happily sell you a 4 GB iPhone SE Special Edition with his personalized genuine signature etched on the back.

There will also be an accompanying personal letter which will provide encouragement for getting on to highest iCloud tier subscription.

You are Apple's hero!

BTW, Foxconn themselves are planning to manufacture devices including iPhones in India by setting up their own plant.

Hmm yes I didn't think of that. I work in the music industry, so whenever I have the chance to relax my ears and not listen to music, I don't.

I do still have music on my iPhone of course, but it's just a few playlists that are synced, not the whole library. I would need hundreds of iPhones to sync my entire library.

You tried far too hard to be funny there; the votes speak volumes. Subtlety is key.

Check out this Apple Commercial for the iPhone 5....seems relevant with the 5SE being released on Monday.

Huh? :/ - you phrased that slightly ambiguously: you do or don't listen, when you have time for silence?

Votes? Only you have upvoted his view.
So basically you are content with mediocrity where it is possible to get double capacity at same price?

Some people.....

As a 5s owner I am really glad that this new smaller iphone is coming out because the larger phones are just not convenient to me. I was actually thinking to buy another iphone 5s just as a backup when my 5s eventually starts giving problems. The 6s is just too much of a large phone for me it doesn't fit in my pockets, in my hand etc.

I applaud Apple for this move, so many people based on preference or just sheer physical characteristics cannot use these larger phones comfortable. For me the 5 SE is a reason to upgrade from the 5s. I am sure a lot of 4, 4s, 5 and 5s users will also upgrade to the 5 SE.

Can't wait to see the full official specs come tomorrow.

P.S. 16gb is unacceptable even for something like the 5c. This new phone should start with a base of 32GB.

This great move to fill the line of iPhones.
Once it is done, we can concentrate on software side of things, which is WWDC.
I would like to see new iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, TV OS, CarPlay OS, and maybe maybe HomeOS!
Also, would welcome new Macs (especialy headless dGPU mac mini!) and new USB-C macs

See, that's the thing. The logic here is if you are not satisfied with a 16GB iPhone, you buy another product that satisfies you. Google is selling a 32GB Nexus 5X for $399, and it's a great phone. With this simple logic, where nobody is buying the 16GB iPhone, then Apple will re-strategize as it will see 16GB models not moving in the channels.

Problem is, people keep complaining about 16GB iPhone, yet they are still buying them. That's what I'm seeing here. Seriously, let's see the days after the announcement. We will see loads of people bragging that they have pre-order the phone. That will only justify Apple's pricing strategy.

Well if iphone se is going to have a base storage of 16gb then hopefully iphone 7 will have 32gb as its base storage.
It won' t.
iPhone 7 pro will though. But will be at least about 150-200us more expensive that the 16gb iPhone 7 and at the same price as a 128gb iPhone 7 . It will be about 100us more expensive than the 7+ 16gb and just as expensive as a 64gb iPhone 7+.

So:
iPhone 7 16/64/128 :649/749/849
7+ 16/64/128: 749/849/949
7 pro 32/128: 849/999

Peoples logic is they are feeling cheated by this Apple's obvious upselling strategy.

Then by logic is for them to buy something else that is of better value than keep being cheated no? :D Unless of course people are masochists. I mean clearly the 16GB iPhones are still selling if Apple still makes them.

16 GB iPhones are still selling most because they are the cheapest.
If the lowest tier is 32GB, it will be best seller as well.
But I thought the argument is that nobody wanted 16GB, and it will ruin Apple's sales/business.
So which is it?
