This isn't really a problem that is stopping me from doing anything but it is really annoying. Whenever I put my Power Mac G5 into target disk mode, the fans slowly get louder and louder until they are running at full speed (which is really loud!). Is there any fix for this annoyance?

Other than booting from the G5 itself, no.

The system kext files that the G5 loads on boot control the fans. These aren't necessary and are not used on any other system. Without the OS being booted the Mac has nothing controlling the fans and so it reverts to the firmware which turns the fans on full blast in order to protect the processors.
