OK sorry what i posted was pretty confusing.

What I want to know is if people think the new iBooks will be able to hold more RAM than the current models, which max out at 640MB.

The current iBook G4 can hold 1 GB + 128 MB using the same RAM for the 12" PowerBook. They just don't want you to know about it.

wha...

I'm sure whoever typed these wasn't "offical" because even the Airport/APX listings are backwards and all over the place.

The other thing to keep in mind (that lots of complainers won't of course) is that with iBook and PowerBook updates presumably imminent, this means that, at least as far as the PowerBooks go, there wil be no G5s for a LONG time. Apple wouldn't update the line and then revamp it completely with G5s in 2 months at WWDC, as an example. Expect to see the PowerMac G5 updates at WWDC or sooner (hopefuly to 3 GHz!), and then possibly a new G5 iMac before G5 PowerBooks - although I'm not holding my breath on that one either!

If the new 12" iBook G4 1 Ghz has 512K of L2 Cache now does that mean it's using the new 7447A processor? I worry that Apple will use the 7447 that they are using in the current 14" iBook G4 1 Ghz. Doesn't really make sense I guess but Apple has done strange things before or perhaps the 7447A is not available in all speeds. I don't know

Scream at me all you want, but if those are the specs on the 12"PB, then why bother? I'll be, unfortunately, sticking with my Rev. A 12"PB for anthor 6 months then. *crossing fingers that this is wrong*

Hmm... You currently have an 867MHz G4 12" PowerBook. The new model is now (according to these specs) going to be a 1.33GHz G4 12" PowerBook. Gee, after one year that's only about a 60% speed boost. How dare they not give you more than that!

Well, despite my previous post, we don't know anything yet.. but yeah, if these are the specs, then it's not great, unless there's things not listed here, which just might be the kicker..

better screens, lighter weight, better GPU, faster drives.. if we could get those things, then these might be great buys, but if it's basically the same, then it's not the big bang Apple needs to get folks to buy in hoards.

You don't need a G5 in a PB to get people to buy, but unless you can pull it off, throw in lots of bells and whistles until you can.

As has been repeatedly pointed out, the PowerBooks are still selling quite well in their current configurations (I want to say #6 on laptop sales, industry wide, but don't quote me on that). Just because these specs aren't enough to get you to buy one doesn't mean that the PowerBooks are going to suddenly start selling worse after this update. If anything, I'd guess that they will sell better, and thus be closer to that number one seller spot.

My view is that if the Appleinsider info is good, then the iBooks and 12" PBs are looking like getting pretty sweet upgrades, but I am disappointed in the 15" SD and 17", and hope that the screen resolution and graphics cards get bumped to make them signficantly superior to the model released in January last year...

Thanks! trust them not to say... then it makes the iBook look like better competition against the pBook i guess... ah well... as Im in australia they wont announce any upgrades and definite specs until at least midnight today... damn you americans for being so chronologically challenged! :p :D

*ozi wonders if it is worth waiting up all night, then having to go to work at 730 tomorrow... hmmmm tempting*

not to mention twice the L2 cache, usb2.0, 50% more hd storage, and (chances are) 33mhz more FSB. Those Bastards!!!

on another note, i wonder if the iBook's will go from their current ATA-66 spec to ATA-100... if so, combined with the doubled cache size, the 14" iBook could easily steal some potential 12" powerbook sales. $100 less, and you get 133mhz less, and no audio input, but a larger screen.... not a bad deal at all.

sure the screen is larger, but the resolution is the same. to me resolution is the only factor when deciding a monitor size, as long as it looks good. also the powerbook is so much smaller, even compaired to the 12" iBook its smaller. Thats why i picked it, because in my case size does matter.

Hmmm...

7:30 Eastern Time.

Apple site same.

Maybe no updates today.

I'll go stand outside the Soho Apple Store just in case.

Upddates are normally at around 9am EST, so don't panic. The Apple online stores are now down (Europe was, now US is too) and there will be updates when they return.

I noticed the "leaked" specs had "TFT" for the 12" screen, as all the other PowerBooks.

If this means the TFT XGA screen in the 12" PowerBook's has finally been upgraded to a proper TFT, then I'd be very very tempted to sell my Rev. A and get a Rev. C. We can only hope :)

updates are here. PBs all have airport extreme cards standard, and the 15" and 17" have the ati 9700, while the 12" hasnvidia 5200 w/ 64mb vram

I was really surprised that Apple is making an upgrade announcement on a Monday. Now it still opens to what will occur tomorrow Tuesday, the normal announcement day.

Apple's been using a true TFT display since the Powerbook 180c. The only exception has been the passive matrix displays of the Powerbook 520c, and I believe the 165c. TFT displays have been the standard for just about all active matrix displays since the Powerbook 180c. So to say that the Powerbook is not a "proper" TFT display is a misnomer. If there was a feature you wanted in the display like extended desktop, that's one thing that the iBook does not have built-in support. Though it does have support for mirroring. Read the specs on Apple's website.

Yes, true TFT displays have been in Apple LCD's for years. You will not notice any real difference from your Rev. A to the new Rev. C in screen quality. But in speed and graphics it's quite a step up!
