Can we just start the complaining about how they updated the 'books so little, and how it is not a G5 yet and there is no reason to buy them lets wait till the end of summer then there will be a G5 book, I hope I sound like an idiot tommarow if they come out with a G5 book, but probably not so lets start right now, why did it take so long for such minor upgrades, woohoo .2ghz more and 20gb bigger hardrive, atleast they could put 512 in the lower powerbooks, and 1gb in the bigger ones, most pc laptops at that price come with them, or bundle office full with them, or include a three year warrenty, then if the specs aren't that great that would be nice, or just sell them for a little more to give us what we buy on the side most times anyway. They took so long they should make up for it and if no G5 that would be nice

yea, I'd be semi-disappointed if those specs are true. For one, why would the 15" SuperDrive PB only drop in price? Wouldn't that throw the pricing balance of the whole line off? And I wish Apple would stick in 512MB standard on the whole Powerbook line, 256MB is just paltry for a "pro-level" laptop.

Scream at me all you want, but if those are the specs on the 12"PB, then why bother? I'll be, unfortunately, sticking with my Rev. A 12"PB for anthor 6 months then. *crossing fingers that this is wrong*

i got the same RevA 12", and while i won't buy one of these new PB's (due to saving $$ for a downpayment on a house).. i would say that these are worthy speed bumps. I was expecting 1.25ghz on the 12", so 1.33ghz with 60GB HD stock is pretty impressive. Also i am happy to see the iBook may be getting a 512k L2 again the G3's adapted a doubled cache after the first couple revisions, very good that apple is abandoning the 256k cache. This makes the iMac the last product with a 256k L2. If the 12" gets a 167mhz FSB, thats even better... but i do think that these are worthy speedbumps.

Well, despite my previous post, we don't know anything yet.. but yeah, if these are the specs, then it's not great, unless there's things not listed here, which just might be the kicker..

better screens, lighter weight, better GPU, faster drives.. if we could get those things, then these might be great buys, but if it's basically the same, then it's not the big bang Apple needs to get folks to buy in hoards.

You don't need a G5 in a PB to get people to buy, but unless you can pull it off, throw in lots of bells and whistles until you can.

AppleInsider posting specs

AppleInsider has posted specs on the new machines. Time will tell but personally it looks like I'll be waiting for the G5 PB's, at this point I can't see any compelling reason to replace my still useful TiBook.

Obviously posted without reading first - amazing the number of posts in a 20 minute period, I guess there's a lot of interest in this refresh.

I still can't get excited about this update, a higher res screen might give me some incentive to upgrade but otherwise I'll be lurking here for another 9 months for the next round of frenzied speculation.

... the 15-inch PowerBook Super Drive model, which is listing for $100 less.

AWESOME! hopefully they have a 128 mb graphics card in there! either way I'm getting mine this week - hooray!

Seems that it was a false alarm if that was the graphic he saw. If you look on the URL, the date on the file is "091603" or, September 16, 2003. This looks like a relic from the introduction of the Rev. B.

I just got that from Apple.com > Store > PowerBooks at the top. It's still there, so it's probably what he saw.

We don't know anthing yet, and AI doesn't have a great track record, but if these are the case, then it's a Utility Bump.. meaning it's just throwing in what they have until they release things people actually want.

I'm still holding out hope for the real deal, and better things.

No doubt about it, they are good sized speedbumps. Not big enough a difference to consider upgrades, however.

And this is exactly why Apple wil not do it... they want your money ;)

What?! Heaven forbid a company wanting consumer's money - what are they trying to do, make profits and be a successful company?! What kind of business is that? ;)

Really? Apple? Is this Apple we're talking about? Well, I'll be damned.

Airport Standard?

It seemed that all of the Powerbook's listed Airport on their feature list? Does this mean it comes standard? It was also listed on the 14.1" iBook. And it lists them all as Airport Extreme except for the 12.1" models. Very odd stuff...what does it all mean?

Means we don't know squat for another 8 hours.. get some sleep..

All Apple portables are Airport Extreme ready, but you will have to buy the optional AE card.

Also, the RAM in the 12 inch ibook (and other models) has been bumped up. Do we therefore expect that if 640MB of ram was the max for current ibooks (with 128mb ram standard) that the new models will have a higher max allowed ram? Maybe two additional SO-DIM ram slots? Im hoping I can max my new ibook out with 256+512 mb, or even more than 1gb!!!

Well, this might be one of the sweeteners to soften the lack of Extreme processing power. Lets face it, Apple is applying all their PB engineering staff to getting the G5 ready, this refresh is only going to be a minor speed bump with maybe a sweetener or two and a small price drop to keep the momentum going. And I seem to recall the PB's are selling well regardless, it's only MacRumors PB geeks who will be disappointed.

Duff-Man says...Well, I am not going to scream, but I will say...somehow I do not think that your Rev. A Powerbook which is barely a year old is really the target market for a minor revision to the line. Most users would not really think of upgrading after such little time. And just what did you realistically expect? I think the specs are just about spot-on what I would expect for this rev.....oh yeah!

This sucks. Tomorrow is my busiest day in the next 4 months because I have two finals. I think I'm just going to go on a self-imposed internet ban so I can study, if not, I'd be glued to Apple.com tomorrow figuring out which configuration of Powerbook I'm going with (I could waste a good 3 hours doing that alone).

OK sorry what i posted was pretty confusing.

What I want to know is if people think the new iBooks will be able to hold more RAM than the current models, which max out at 640MB.

I don't know about you, but something that caught my eye to question the validity of these specs was the fact that it only says "airport" in the 12 inch specs. Seems like a pretty big typo for something that looks semi-authoritative. It kind of makes me wonder if someone actually got this from an internal memo, or pulled it out of their...

But then again, maybe I'm just overanalyzing (just like the rest of ya's)
