Is it necessary? Probably not. But Apple can start integrating it nonetheless, claiming that it "offers the consumer the top of the line innovation, yada yada yada". All the while Apple will be positioning itself as an even stronger player in the living room market by giving all of its computers the ability to plug into the latest TVs. Imagine a Mac mini with dual HDMI outputs, a 500GB hard drive, and a real bluetooth, Apple designed remote control.... Can you see it? :D

i mean i think its necessary as i AM planning on souly having powermac station in my room for when i go Uni, next year, as it will take up less room than a computer+phone+tv+display+soundsystem.,...>...

its the perfect multitasking machine, so having a nice quality on it so i can watch tv/dvds even PLAY playstation on it will be amazing all in one with extra clear vision

i know most people wont have that usage for it, but it will be pefect for a flat share at uni/college....

I think Apple’s Cinema displays will most likely support HDMI when it starts shipping machines with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drives. As to when that happens, I too have a feeling it won't be for a while. :(

Unfortunately it looks like, if one wants to view their HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray discs in High Definition, HDCP compliancy will be required. I’m hoping that Apple doesn’t go the extreme route like Microsoft but it looks like Apple will be forced to. Since Intel owns the licensing rights to HDCP and Apple is switching to Intel... If Apple sticks with Blu-Ray then Apple might have some wriggling room with respect to HDCP, since HDMI and Blu-Ray aren’t license owned by Intel or Microsoft.

Indeed, these are interesting times…
Ars Technica has an article about a Blu-Ray drive being shipped next month. Expected to be quite expensive though.

Great link! This is very promising news. I tend to take Microsoft’s word with a grain of salt. Sounds to me the HD-DVD format and it’s developers are having the issues, hence the negative campaigning by Microsoft. Nice to see the Blu-Ray camp is making the HD-DVD camp eat their words. :)

Once again, great link! :D

That's rediculous. In the other thread one guy is trying to put out the idea of a 20" PB - and it actually selling.

Haven't you heard? We'll buy ANYTHING if it appears on the MacRumors forum!! :D

Anyone notice that the Estimated Ship times in the Apple Store for the Power Mac G5 line all went to 3-5 business days? The Estimated Ship used to be 1 day for the 2.0GHz and 2.3GHz and around 2-3 days for the 2.7GHz. Could something new be coming?

Well we know SOMETHING NEW IS COMING. At least in the PM sector (although I'd personally be surprised if the Powerbooks weren't updated - at present they're quite similar to my relatively affordable iBook...)

8" PowerBook?

im up for an ultra thing and light 8" powerbook

I must say that I was all for an 8" PowerBook - I need something light and small for when I travel. I even spec'd it out:
http://www.daha.co.uk/daha/Apple_8_Inch_PowerBook

But after using my JCV Mobile mini note XP371 for over 6 months traveling around OZ and NZ I can say that the keyboard is just that little bit too small. And that's an 8.9" display. So I'd say stick with pretty much the full size keyboard - that means a 16:10 diagonal of 11.42".

So, I'd like to see a PowerBook along the size and build lines of the Sony VAIO TX1XP:

Viewable diagonal size: 11.1"
Max resolution: 1366 x 768
Display ratio: 16:9

http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?head=36&page=4436

But I reckon Apple need to support a resolution independent UI before they can go to 141 DPI! ;-)

I hope we have this to look forward to with Mactel and 10.5... ;-)

Cheers Daniel

Apple has habit of keeping new products at or near the price points of the products they are replacing. Dual-core processors are really expensive right now, so making dual dual-core standard would raise the base price dramatically. It's hard to predict how they'll structure a dual-core lineup considering all the different arrangements they had with the dual processor G5 lineups over the years. Possibly they'll have two single chip dual-core options and two dual dual-core options for balance. I think the single core models are gone after this upgrade.
I have to agree that Apple tries to keep their price points as close to the old price as possible.

Mac OS Rumors believes that a Mactel OS 10.4.4 will be available in 8 weeks.

Unfortunately those are the same guys who believe in the easter bunny and that the sun revolves around the earth. :D Goofballs.

What time tomorrow will the U.S. Apple store be updated?

I've heard...
That usually it is updated within about 15 minutes of whenever the event ends. During the event there is a "we will be back soon" message posted on the store.

Yep - the sign always appears just before an event starts, and then shortly after it is finished the Store comes back online with all sorts of new goodies. ;) :)

Just like Christmas, you go to sleep, and when you wake up, there's all sorts of new stuff!

Guess we'll find out if Steve thinks we have been naughty or nice. Boy, I hope it isn't a lump of coal...

I sure wish I could figure out how to get to the expo before Sat! :(

No, they won't. And it's highly unlikely this revision of powerbook will be intel. To run windows, you have no choice but to buy a windows machine (other than VPC... which is way slow.)

Virtual PC is way slow for... Games.
Doesn't even work for games.

But for Word/Excel and Microsoft's IDE: ??? Something Something 2003, it's adequate.

It seemed very slow on my Power Mac Dual 2.7 I had a while ago. It felt like a Pentium 200Mhz.
