What happened to the speed bumped G4 PowerBook rumours?

They could have lied about the progress of a G5 PB just to get surplus gone, perhaps they will offer cash back to customers who just bought because Apple said there would be no g5PB for a while.

My guess is speed-bumps. Now that 1.7GHz G4 chips are commercially available (and available as processor upgrade cards right now), I would expect to see Apple use them.
My prediction:
This will probably happen without any major announcement. You'll probably just see them for sale on the Apple web site one day soon.
- High-end PowerBook (17" and 15" SuperDrive) bumped to 1.7GHz
- Low-end PowerBook (12" and 15" ComboDrive) bumped to 1.5GHz
- eMac bumped to 1.33 or 1.43GHz

Any modification - whether RAM, hard drive, or video memory - automatically bumps the ship time to 7-10 days. Just a few days ago it was as bad as 10-15 days.

That is just crazy. A G5 Powerbook will be a HUGE event, perhaps the most important announcement of the year. Jobs will have to go on an on about how they did it. If they have them coming out this year the best place to announce them would be the developers conference, or Macworld in Paris. I predict a modest speed bump and the rumors will be flying fast and furious by June.
SiliconAddict said:I love how people keep pushing back the time frame they expect the G5 PowerBook. Fall of '03 it was...They aren't going to come out with one until at least MW '05. Summer of '04 it was...They aren't going come out with one until Summer of '05. Now people are saying...They aren't going to come out with one until January of '06.
By this summer Apple will have had close to two years of time to develop a G5 PowerBook. Unless IBM is totally clueless I'm betting they are close to production of "something" and I'm betting the migration to the 90nm process has expedited that something and at the same time slowed that something down due to fab issues. This year, hopefully, IBM will get the 90nm process down and can start really cranking out G5 chips. Once a stable yield is happening Ill bet cash the G5 PowerBook will appear. Apple themselves announced that the iMacs werent shipping as fast as they wanted and blamed IBM. Now imagine how much more of a nightmare it would have been for them if they release a G5 PowerBook along with the G5 iMac, alongside the new line of dual processor G5 PowerMacs. Development issues probably comes into play in all of this but Im betting production issues do as well.
Floop said:Or... this could mean nothing at all. Like the 10 previous times PowerBooks have been due 'NEXT WEEK'!
I have been waiting for PowerBook updates for MONTHS and this constant guesstimating that 'next Tuesday' will be 'THE ONE' is really getting on my nerves.
Why the hell do I read rumour sites? I just give myself pain.

P.S. If it is a PowerBook G5, I will simultaneously
a) Be extremely happy
b) Eat my own arse
Please note this will be a new experience for me.
