G5 powerbook? you're dreaming. WWDC at the earliest for that. more likely paris, but i don't think we'll see a true G5 powerbook until next january.

What happened to the speed bumped G4 PowerBook rumours? Anyway if it is G5 PowerBooks, that's twice we had denials from Apple executives, and lo, there just around the corner.

It's going to be bad if no one can buy a Powerbook for the next 3 months even if they have to have A powerbook right now.

They could have lied about the progress of a G5 PB just to get surplus gone, perhaps they will offer cash back to customers who just bought because Apple said there would be no g5PB for a while.

Can someone please tell me, or give me an example, of when Apple said to the masses, "There will be no 'x' product released' and then Apple went and released it in several weeks or months?

I am curious if Apple really does this. They have repeatedly stated that the Powerbook G5 is NOT happening soon. I am inclined to believe them unless someone has proof that they have lied in the past.

Now, I don't think that Apple's coming out with a PBG5 any time soon, but for those of you who think Apple missed its best opportunity to hype a new powerbook, I have two words for you:

Superbowl Ad.

Powerbook EOL?!!! i hope this doesnt turn into another iMac. the PB G5s arent ready yet, but they have run through their production contracts with the PB G4s so there will be no powerbooks until september! i can easily see the e-macs being EOLd. the point of them was a cheap alternerative to the imacs and now the mac mini has taken that over, so i think there is no room for the eMac except maybe back to only education.

HAHAHA, Apple offer cash back? Good one. :D

People laughed at, what they thought would be a fact, that Apple would never release a budget priced Mac. Look what happened.

I don't see why everyone's so certain about G5 eMacs. The G4 still has some life left in it, at least in the consumer space. Apple should take the eMacs to 1.5 ghz G4 before switching over to the G5 I imagine. Also, doesn't Apple want to keep some distance between the eMac and iMac? Maybe:

Next week: PowerBook G4 1.67 ghz
Week later: eMc G4 1.42 ghz
Sometime mid-Feb: Power Macs (dual 3.0 ghz)

Then comes iBook G4 1.5 ghz (prolly in March/April),
iMac G5 2.0 ghz (April/May), and Mini G4 1.67 ghz (June).

PowerBooks finally make it to G5 at WWDC (end of June) or Seybold (September); dual-core G5 Power Macs released in August/Sept; eMacs gets yet another G4 update, to 1.67 ghz.

Wow, can I have what you're smoking? Let the most advanced, the most powerful, the most amazing, a liquid cooled fuel celled technological marvel, a stunningly impossible engineering feat, the first 64bit laptop, so on and so forth...just slip out!?!!!

What makes you think it's going to be this amazing marvel of modern machinery that people will read about in history books for generations to come? I'd say there's a better chance IBM toned down the G5 to be in fair competition with the Pentium M spec-wise, and it's just going in a restyled 1" aluminum enclosure.

Occam's Razor, my friend. While I agree you are probably correct in just a modest speed boost, the G5 PowerBook will serve as more of a marketing milestone than an engineering one, watch. :D

There should be fireworks once Steve finally announces the PowerBook G5. :)

I would be happy with a speed bumped PB G4 for now, although I'd rather have Tiger shipped with it.

I have the lastest iBook but I'm not sure how it will handle Tiger...not much of a speed difference?

True, but they're not offering any cash back to people that bought an eMac the day before Macworld now are they?

Uhhh please! A little over the top. Are you an engineer? Well I am. Sending a man to the moon was a engineering marvel. Getting a G5 in a laptop is well below that.

I doubt we're going to see a PBG5.

My guess is speed-bumps. Now that 1.7GHz G4 chips are commercially available (and available as processor upgrade cards right now), I would expect to see Apple use them.

My prediction:
  • High-end PowerBook (17" and 15" SuperDrive) bumped to 1.7GHz
  • Low-end PowerBook (12" and 15" ComboDrive) bumped to 1.5GHz
  • eMac bumped to 1.33 or 1.43GHz
This will probably happen without any major announcement. You'll probably just see them for sale on the Apple web site one day soon.

Agreed.

Except that I expect a 1.5 GHz G4 in the eMac.
Also the high end PowerBooks will get the Radeon 9700 mobility 128 VRAM as a standard... I hope :)
As for a possible G5 PowerBook..... well maybe the next WWDC will be the event. The G5 PowerBook release along with Tiger.

One interesting thing to note is that while all PowerBooks are currently listed as shipping "same business day," that only applies to stock configurations. Any modification - whether RAM, hard drive, or video memory - automatically bumps the ship time to 7-10 days. Just a few days ago it was as bad as 10-15 days.

now on the UK site the stock PBs are 6-8 days whereas they used to be 24hrs.......

could mean something minor, like widely rumoured speed bump.....but something at least.....

I love how people keep pushing back the time frame they expect the G5 PowerBook. Fall of '03 it was...They aren't going to come out with one until at least MW '05. Summer of '04 it was...They aren't going come out with one until Summer of '05. Now people are saying...They aren't going to come out with one until January of '06.

By this summer Apple will have had close to two years of time to develop a G5 PowerBook. Unless IBM is totally clueless I'm betting they are close to production of "something" and I'm betting the migration to the 90nm process has expedited that something and at the same time slowed that something down due to fab issues. This year, hopefully, IBM will get the 90nm process down and can start really cranking out G5 chips. Once a stable yield is happening I’ll bet cash the G5 PowerBook will appear. Apple themselves announced that the iMacs weren’t shipping as fast as they wanted and blamed IBM. Now imagine how much more of a nightmare it would have been for them if they release a G5 PowerBook along with the G5 iMac, alongside the new line of dual processor G5 PowerMacs. Development issues probably comes into play in all of this but I’m betting production issues do as well.

Hell, I don't even want a G5 PB, i'll take a G4 with better screen resolution. That's all I want....is that too much to ask for Apple.

I think the eMac is going to be killed off completely. Simply because it still uses a CRT and as far as specs are going to its eating into the Mac Mini's market, which isn't a good thing.

As for the Powerbook. I also agree that this will most likely mean speedbumps. However, I'm not ruling out G5 powerbooks completely. It would be logical for apple to intro them at a big event. But it wouldn't be the first time that apple set up a seperate/keynote just to intro a new product. So why not now? I see no reason why it would take another year for them to implement a G5 into the powerbook. I'm sure they've been working on it since the first moment they got their hands on the G5 chips which is quite some time ago now. Development could take long but 2 years seems somewhat excessive.

Just my $0.02 :D

Only eMac SuperDrive EOL'ed!

Did anyone notice that apparently only the SuperDrive configuration was EOL'ed. So, the Combo config is not yet EOL'ed. Isn't that weird? If it was the other way round, it would make more sense.

That is just crazy. A G5 Powerbook will be a HUGE event, perhaps the most important announcement of the year. Jobs will have to go on an on about how they did it. If they have them coming out this year the best place to announce them would be the developers conference, or Macworld in Paris. I predict a modest speed bump and the rumors will be flying fast and furious by June.

Who said any thing about such technology? Most are just expecting a lower power (Possibly clocked down G5). Also a 64 bit laptop has already been done. It is not new. There are several 64 bit AMD laptops available and you can even run a 64 bit version of Linux on them. Here is one
<http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux-laptop-lc2464.html>

Sun also used to make a 64 bit laptop running a 64 bit version of Solaris. However I don't think it was very mainstream and I am not sure that they offer it anymore.
I saw one at a technology conference in the SUN booth.

Or... this could mean nothing at all. Like the 10 previous times PowerBooks have been due 'NEXT WEEK'!

I have been waiting for PowerBook updates for MONTHS and this constant guesstimating that 'next Tuesday' will be 'THE ONE' is really getting on my nerves.

Why the hell do I read rumour sites? I just give myself pain.

Floop

P.S. If it is a PowerBook G5, I will simultaneously

a) Be extremely happy
b) Eat my own arse

Please note this will be a new experience for me.

You're totally right. I was holding off trying to buy a G5 powerbook for WWDC in 2003 (and ended up getting a G5 tower when it never came out). Now I'm going to law school this fall and hope to get a G5 powerbook by then.

Bad: The PowerBook will be out of production until the next PB starts, like the iMac.

Doubt that Apple would allow that to happen again. Remember the reason for the iMac G5 delay was supposed to be due to design issues. Can't believe that Jobs would not hedge bets a little if the PB is going to the G5. If it is a G4 speed bump, then no worries IMO.
