the way powerbook info comes and goes, this may mean they're getting replaced tomorrow, or in the next 3 years. Who knows if it's a good time to get one or not, but I'd bank on it NOT being a good time to get one now, unless you don't feel the need to live on the bleeding edge of technology.

Good point.

Though has Apple ever gone this long between updates? Other than the issue with the iMac G5?

IF a PB G5 was available in the next weeks, Jobs would have announced it at MWSF for sure. It would not be the first time he announces a product that does not ship until a month to 6 weeks later.

MPC8641 or even MPC8641D are not due either - they will be in production summer or fall.

So, if we are lucky, the big news could be a 7448 since this chip is expected to be ready in spring. More likely, it is just a speed bump.

How often is this type of "End of Life" statements made? Between small upgrades or only when new models are coming?

I had the same question. I think that with each upgrade (small and big) they are End of Lifed - because even small upgrades carry a new part number. So my thought are like most others. G4 speedbump now. G5 announced around June and shipping by September. That would give us 8 months between powerbook updates. I also can see the eMac Superdrive model going and the cheaper one staying around for Education.

The only other possibility is... a press only event.

MWSF was stuffed to the gills with announcements. Mac mini only got about 6-7 minutes it seemed. Maybe they wanted to showcase the PowerBook G5 at it's own press event. Who knows. Why am I doing this to myself. Too much time on my hands I suppose, even though I'm meant to be doing something else I CANNOT RESIST LOGGING ON

Nit-picky

Wow, can I have what you're smoking? 😎 Let the most advanced, the most powerful, the most amazing, a liquid cooled fuel celled technological marvel, a stunningly impossible engineering feat, the first 64bit laptop, so on and so forth...just slip out!?!!! That is just crazy. A G5 Powerbook will be a HUGE event, perhaps the most important announcement of the year. Jobs will have to go on an on about how they did it. If they have them coming out this year the best place to announce them would be the developers conference, or Macworld in Paris. I predict a modest speed bump and the rumors will be flying fast and furious by June.

Just to be nit-picky I do believe tadpole was the first with a 64-bit laptop many years ago (sun sparc processor running solaris) 😉

Anyway, I'm all game for an update. I've been holding off for 2-3 months now about getting an apple laptop to go along with my powermac g5 and replace my aging brick of a intel laptop. (Whoever thought it was a smart idea to use desktop components to build a laptop should be shot!)

Probably not good news...

As others have stated, this is probably the end of the eMac. It's pretty much obsoleted by the Mac Mini. If you want one for your collection, get one now.

As for the PowerBook, there are four possibilities that I see (in order of probability):

1) a minor speed bump (90% likely)
2) a PowerBook drought resulting from manufacturing contracts for the existing lineup expiring before Apple could get the next generation out of the prototype stage (i.e. they're working on it, but it's going more slowly than expected, and we'll have a situation like we did with the iMac because of it) (5 %)
3) a major revision featuring dual core G4s from Freescale and/or less insipid GPUs (5%)
4) a major revision featuring a mobile G5 that IBM has been working on in secret for a couple of years...and monkeys will fly out of my a$$.

Cheers

I agree with everyone who says this will just be a speed bumped G4. Think about how hyped the release of a G5 Powerbook will be, Steve won't just let it slip by people with a "silent" release. The earliest one could possibly expect a G5 Powerbook would be WWDC and then MWSF. So get ready to wait an entire year more (I say to my anxious credit card).

That is not to say that Apple could not do an "Apprentice" style event at the last minute. Though i think it would be too early based on another thread here, a "surprise" commercial during the Super Bowl maybe? <joking>

Who said any thing about such technology? Most are just expecting a lower power (Possibly clocked down G5). Also a 64 bit laptop has already been done. It is not new. There are several 64 bit AMD laptops available and you can even run a 64 bit version of Linux on them. Here is one
<http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux-laptop-lc2464.html>

Sun also used to make a 64 bit laptop running a 64 bit version of Solaris. However I don't think it was very mainstream and I am not sure that they offer it anymore.
I saw one at a technology conference in the SUN booth.

DB there is no way in hell Jobs is going to release a G5 PowerBook without a grand presentation among a crowd. That isn't Jobs's style. It never has been his style. It never will be. Face facts here. This is NOT a minor upgrade. Apple will make as big a deal about this as they did with the iMac upgrade. That and you can bet that Apple is going to redesign the thing from the ground up. New case anyone? Again Jobs would eat his arm off before just slipping this onto apple.com without great fanfare

The PowerBook is being replaced by the PowerBrick, a G5 Mac mini with a 7" LCD attached to the top.

Those minis are really portable...

the first 64bit laptop

What the hell are you smoking? The AMD Athlon 64-M has been in laptops since practically when the Athlon 64 arrived in desktops. Albeit such machines are the size of small automobiles, generate the heat necessary to melt metal and usually run out of power faster than you can say 'holy benchmarks batman!' but they do exist.

As for the G5 I too stamp my foot on the WWDC, I've contended WWDC '05 since the PowerMacs arrived on the scene, partially due to what I know of the G5 chip and also due to the knowledge that that it'll make mark 2 years since the PowerMac G5 and that's how long it took Apple to get a G4 in a PowerBook. Yes, I'm not certain but if I was to bet good money I'd pick the WWDC, even if the PowerBooks don't actually ship until like August.

Liquid cooled marvel

What makes you think it's going to be this amazing marvel of modern machinery that people will read about in history books for generations to come? I'd say there's a better chance IBM toned down the G5 to be in fair competition with the Pentium M spec-wise, and it's just going in a restyled 1" aluminum enclosure.

Occam's Razor, my friend. While I agree you are probably correct in just a modest speed boost, the G5 PowerBook will serve as more of a marketing milestone than an engineering one, watch. 😀

That may very well be true, but this is Apple mind you; and no matter what the reality is, the Jobs distortion field will be in full force with a G5 PB release, my hyperbole not withstanding. Though, even a toned down G5 would still require a lot of clever engineering in an inch thick inclousure. My prediction is liquid cooling.

I think the eMac is going to be killed off completely. Simply because it still uses a CRT and as far as specs are going to its eating into the Mac Mini's market, which isn't a good thing.

Just my $0.02 😀

With the Mac mini, I can see the eMac go. Would hate to see it go, but time marches on. Though for the schools an all in one is a safer bet, and easier to purchase and track.

The IBM T series has consistantly been in an 1 inch enclosure as long as I can remember, and their specs are much more impressive than what the G5 will most likely come with, especially the new T43 series coming in March. (But they don't run OSX 😛 )

OK, everybody just calm down. Step away from the keyboard. You folks are taking me way toooooo seriously. A little hyperbole for humor nothing more. My point was to simply illustrate how Apple will hype this to the nth degree. No one said anything about my fuel cell remark. 🙄

This is good news and all but when can we expect the next lawsuit?

Depends on what the resellers are able to say under their contract with Apple. I am waiting to hear from US distributers as to the supply side issues, and that will give us a better idea as to what is happening.

history repeating?

what happened with the last PB revisions? were they EOL'ed too?

if they were then alright it may not be anything major.
but if they wern't then it could be something big. very big.

For this forum newbie and uneducated Mac enthusiast who is looking to purchase a PB....is this good news or bad news?

Is this a signal for immediate PB updates or sometime in June?

The PowerBooks haven't been updated in a VERY long time. I wouldn't buy one until they're updated.

If they did discontinue the eMac, wouldn't this free up a lot of G4 chips for the Mac mini? Just a thought.

it says the emac "with superdrive" will be EOL'd, maybe apple will keep the combo/no drive emac avaliable for schools now that the mini is out for the low end switcher market?

Sometime mid-Feb: Power Macs (dual 3.0 ghz)

During the last conference call Apple stated that they expected the supply and demand for the 2.5 Ghz PowerMac to reach a balance by the end of the current quarter. This means they still can't produce enough 2.5 Ghz chips. It is therefore unlikely to expect faster 970FX chips before some time, let's say June.

Maybe the 970MP and 970GX scale better, then you could see a jump in the frequency a bit earlier, provided these two chips come out early enough.

Check back next tuesday

I think I've got the jist of it.... none of us know exactly what we are talking about.

I'd love to see a G5. But I beleive the "hoopla" isn't available (and they aren't on the list of current Super Bowl Advertisers - Ad Age Link

I'm so hungry for a new PB, I'd much rather have the speedbumped G4 than a 1st gen G5. Less hassle.

Let's go Steve! Let's go Steve!

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Oh and in other news....

Intel pre-announces Centrino Sonoma 🙁 *insert irked emocicon here*

Slightly off topic but pertainant to the mobile laptop discussion and the need for something new…

I would love to see actual benchmarks on the next gen Pentium M chips against the latest and greatest G4 laptops. I think every die-hard Mac fan would have to start polishing up the phrase "But it doesn't run OS X". Because frankly that is the only thing going for the PowerBook line these days.

Honestly at this point G4 Dual core, G5, G3, or G3.14159265~ I don't give a crap as long as it can at least get within a stride or two of AMD's and Intel's mobile chips.

G5 is what everyone is waiting for...hopefully Steve is focusing on getting the G5 in since that is what will sale the best since we are all waiting for it. PB users will be most likely to upgrade if that is the next installment.
