UK store shows 6-8 days on all STOCK laptops so looks like updates are pretty immanent.

Do updates ALWAYS happen on a tuesday? Looks like speed bumps next tuesday if theres an 8 day breather period...would fit in the gap nicely

I may be wrong but i was thinking that apple offered Panther at a reduced price for systems purchaced within a certain time frame... I thought I heard wind of it at least.

"hypothetical" or "hypocritical"

Note that keyword "pre-announces". While Apple keeps their future development secret (and files lawsuits against those who tell), Intel and Microsoft make sweeping press releases months (and sometimes years) before any product will ship.

So we're comparing today's Mac laptops against a hypothetical future PC laptop. Which is completely unfair.

These systems are quoting ship dates of two weeks (Feb).

Was the MiniMac "hypothetical" because it was announced a couple of weeks before shipping?

Just speed bumps?

Here's a question:

Why wait this long just to do a simple speed bump? If all they were going to do was bump the CPU speeds, why not do it before christmas to get a bit of a lift from the holiday season?

I don't think we'll see a G5 immediately, but I think this will be somewhat more than a speed bump. What I'd like to see would be a FSB bump, if possible. I realize the powerbooks run at 167 now, utilizing DDR333 ram, but why not bump that to 200/DDR400, which will do much more for the computer than a .17 GHz speed bump. Also, why not have a BTO 7200 RPM hard drive?

Perhaps we'll see some price drops (especially in Australia) to make the powerbooks more price-competitive with the ibooks, since for a consumer, they're very close in feature set (yes I know, video card, gigabit, etc).

Just my 2c.

C'mon updates.

I'm especially interested in the possibility of eMac updates. Will they be G4s which could cut into Mac Mini sales or G5s which would cut into iMac sales. Sticking with G4s probably makes more sense for Apple right now. If they are G5s, that would necessitate an update to the iMacs, probably, or the same problem of the iMacs being expensive eMacs with flat screens would return.

"Expensive" is the key.Apple may wish they could force people to buy "up" on the price scale but it costs them more customers than they can convince to actually do it.A G5 emac is possible and priced in the $900- $1000 range should be a big seller.I would like a G5 but dont have any use for that 17 inch widescreen.Give me something that costs less! A 17 inch crt or a 15 inch lcd would be fine. This notion that it will canibalize other products sales is misguided.A sell is a sell,no matter if its an imac or an emac.It doesnt matter as long as there is profit, and looking at apples prices there is no danger there wont be some of that!

I'd be happy with . . .

right now, I would just be delighted if they adjusted prices. A $200-$300 drop in PBs would be very nice. But I can't see them doing that without a new product. Makes sense that something would happen around the release of Tiger.

A friend of mine who works at an Apple store has whispered to me the next Powerbooks will be dual G4s. That is all I know.

Wait a second...

An EOL? For a minor speed bump?

Aren't EOLs usually model/design changes? Like iMac G4->iMac G5? Or TiBook->AlBook?

Why would Apple EOL the Powerbook for just a speed bump? Wouldn't they just start selling the high end model as the low end and make a new high end with a processor that's a little faster? Anyone ever seen an EOL for just a speed bump?

It seems to me that EOL means: "We're about to release something that changes the whole PB line-up." Is that a G5? I dunno. But I think it's more than a G4 clocked 10% higher.
Yep... I think...
Last story from MacRumors that talked about the Powerbooks being EOL'd was in Oct. 2001

Thanks

I love that movie. I'm gonna go watch it now :D

NEWBIE QUESTION ALERT!!

how would a dual G4 be better/not as good as a G5? and how much better would a dual G4 be compaired to the current PB?

I guess it's pretty serious. :p

If it is just a speed bump... and they're due next Tuesday (let's say), will they be available in store that day? Obviously if it is G5 / dual-core G4 (not saying it IS, just saying if it WAS).. it would be much longer, I'd think.

Am looking to get a PB asap but not getting this current model.

because they need to get CPUs that can be clocked this high from ex-Moto. As long as their process improvements and engineering wonders does not allow them to ship CPUs with clock speeds of 1.7Ghz and up, we won't see laptops running at 1.7Ghz or higher - simple as that.

Talked to quite a few of the Apple store guys the night before the london opening and they said that they get told s*d all about whats happening with Apple products...they are on a very strict need to know and if they don't have to sell it (ie hasn't been released yet) then they don't no about it.

Not saying anyone here is lying but its unlikely there friends would know anything.

Oh and sorry to go on about this but people keep saying that Apple is going to put a Processor that isn't in production yet in to their 'about to be released' PBs. Apple may be damn good at somethings but using CPUs that don't exist yet isn't one of them.

PBs will not have Dual Core G4s

To be honest : I don't think it's d, as Fnac has never really paid much attention for minor speed bumps and the like (they just keep advertising the old model in their shops)

DAMN, they do that in Belgium too? It's the same thing here in Portugal, they STILL have an iMac G4 20'', at an exorbitant price. I can't exactly remember, but for a few months it was the exact same price, which means it was MORE expensive than the iMac G5 20''!!

This makes perfect sense. I know I'm not the only one here thinking that this is almost exactly what they did with the PowerMac G4. They updated the PowerMac G4 one last time in February (I believe) with a new display line. Then, at the WWDC, they came out with the PowerMac G5. I think Apple will be coming out with a new PowerBook G4 in the next three weeks (yes, three), starting next Tuesday. Then, at the WWDC, they will be announcing the new PowerBook G5.

That's a really, really optimistic, dare I say, unrealistic timetable.

I see where you're coming from (really, I do), but I think that it's quite possible. They have probably been trying to get a PowerBook G5 ready since the intro of the PowerMac G5. I think that in two years, they would be able to do it. Sure, I'm not an engineer (well, not yet at least), but I think Apple could pull it off. Additionally, they could always push it back to Paris. They seemed to have solved the cooling issues they were having with the iMac G5 in a matter of a few months, and were able to get it shipping within weeks. We'll all see, but I really do think that the WWDC will be the place for the new PowerBook G5.

Btw, yes, I am an optimist. Just trying to get some positive energy in Apple's direction ;).

We can only hope! I'll have a few thousand bucks saved by the end of spring break, and would love to throw a hefty portion of it Apple's way. :D

hooked

jesus.. i don't even have a mac yet and i can't get away from this site! been reading it for a few months now, first time posting.

i'm looking to switch to a powerbook but like many others waiting for ANY KIND of upgrade before i go through with it. i watched the stream of MWSF and can't wait to get a 17" PB and test out those new features Tiger will have (once it comes out of course).

i wish Apple was more open on their forthcoming products, i think becoming a mac fan is gonna stress me out too much! ;)

apple's plan

I don't know if anyone's thought of it before, but it sounds to me like Apple is going to introduce the lame slightly faster powerbooks in a whole new chassis with a whole new look. Sales will go up because it's "cool" and the chassis can be used a bit down the road for the next generation hardware stuff.

Any thoughts?

Steven
