Heh, I love playing the devil's advocate. ;) The G5 has gone from 2.0ghz to 2.5ghz during its span on the market, which is 25%. The P4 has gone from 3.0ghz to 3.8ghz during that time, which is 27%. So the P4 has scaled faster, and doesn't need water cooling.

Sorry, had to do it. :)

I do not care anything about the P4, but in benchmarks I do not think the 2.5Ghz Dual is 25% faster, more like 15%, on the other hand that's quite a bit. That's why I bought it.

Have you ever heard the fan on a PIV? Its a pain in the head to sleep with one of those things humming at night.

i think there are four possibilitys with the powerbooks:

1) we get dual core g4 powerbooks at 1.67GHz and 2GHz next tuesday

2) the rumors submitters got the wrong end of the stick and when they heard about the next generation of motorola chip thry automatically thought 8561D when actually it's an e700 the motorola g5

3)this is all BS and we are going to get sucky speedbumps of 1.5GHz and 1.67GHz

4) we get an IBM g5 powerbook and all the n00bies will be happy

Why not implement a dual core G4 chip and call it a G5. It seems like it is a big enough difference that it could justify Apple calling it the next generation chip hence calling it a G5. I wonder if this rumor and the leaks in HTML code referencing a G5 Powerbook are the same???

no no no g4 Extreme.

or g4 express it does do 1.4ghz with 10watt of heat

Apple had a chance to intro this laptop at MWSF ---- if its Dual Core or G5, it seems unusual that they would debut outside of a keynote

however, maybe they'll make a 'special' annoucement, as they did with their iPods a few months ago - but even that event was hyped

with regards to Dual vs G5 ---- barefeats showed that a G5 1.6 was beating out Dual G4's (at 1.4 each)

So I think a G5 is better than DualCore ---- but I'd be happy with either one

i think you will find that the p4 was at 3.2GHz when the G5 was announced and it's at 3.8GHz now (with heat problems, it tends to throttle when under load :S) so thats a 18.75% gain in clock speed compared to the G5's 25%, :p n00b.

and the g5 only uses water cooling to stay quiet, apple could air cool it but it would be another MDD g4 like fiasco.

Monday = PowerBook day!

If the reason why stores are down is what we all think it is, Apple might have decided to make Monday the PB day. Remember, last update occurred on April 19, 2004 which was a Monday, too :)

but the US stores seem to be open all day long.they prob must be doing the price update for the Mac Mini like what happened to the US Store

All others stores than US are down. :D Doesn't the US store usually go down a while after the others?
Yes: first all european stores are closed. After some hours, they close the US Store as well. and then, they open all of them with new products...

The U.S. online store shuts down by 8am ET/5am PT on mornings when an update is coming and is back up again by 9am ET/6am PT.

If not mistaken that's in 15 mins from now.... an exciting day ahead !!! Lets hope.

Normally, the US store goes down 30-45 minutes after the European stores. The US store usually goes down at around 12.45 GMT which is in about 5 minutes.

Sometimes I read this forum and feel as if I have walked into some hardcore X-rated slashdot forum :p Dule core G4s and G5s wtf?!? Though it has been very educational.

The Uk site is down? not now. Aussie site is still up but its not Tuesday yet.

Singapore Apple store is under maintenance as well. And we'll be going into Tuesday in another 3 hours plus.

Hopefully it's an update of Powerbook and I can order one to switch :). But it might just be a normal web maintenance.

Oh, and the most popular Apple Centre in Singapore is due for a stock take tomorrow (1 Feb).

Hmmmm .....

Australia is down, did you mean Austria?

Stores down and it's not even a Tuesday, intriguing...

Today is January 31, so this concludes an incredibly amazing month. Apple spoiled us this month. I guess February is going to be boring....
