I'm just happy to learn I'm not the only one quietly obsessing - checking into this website at least once a day, occasionally the apple one, window shopping for bags, bought some software for students/teachers...etc. If I get an ulcer I'm sending the doctor's bill to Mac.

If nothing happens by oct 15 (before it was sept 20) :p , then i am going to put that money to other use. and simply wait till january when i will get some more (out of budget) money.

I am hoping for an oct 3rd update, and found more 'evidence' to support the speculation.... (I have been waiting 2 months now for my switch, and was hoping for a paris update)

a local reseller has a used 12" 1.5 powerbook for sale on ebay, no doubt one of their demo machines, with an end date oct 3rd 6pm aest, which is the evening before the usual tuesday updates

At least you won't miss the HD display :D

Seriously, i think we should use this time to develop a checklist for hardware update information ... my idea is something like this (in order of decreasing reliability and increasing information flow):

Check AppleStore Availability (with or without BTO)
Check MacPrices Reseller Stock info
Check MacBytes
Check Macrumors' Buyers Guide
Check AppleStore promotion deadlines
Check MacPredict
Ask the Eight Ball

Any more ideas/rumor sites/sources?

Yes ,you are correct. I was thinking 2x and wrote dual layer. Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

I am hoping that these delays to upgrading the PB mean that we do have a better upgrade coming prior to the Christmas buying season. I am hoping for low power dual core G4's at 2Ghz, 200 mhz FSB, new hi-res, hi-def display 1920x1080, dual layer superdrive, 7200 rpm HD's, ATI X850 mobility or GE Force Go 6800 ultra GPU. :D

Unfortunately, I think the only reason for the delay is either (1) the PB release is linked with the next Tiger update which appears to be delayed or (2) Apple is trying to buy more time because it plans to transition to the Merom chip which also appears to be delayed or perhaps (3) a little of both. Don't expect stellar updates, and certainly not (for all you dreamers) the 8641(D). Starting with Merom only makes sense for Apple because the Merom chip's architecture is completely different than that of the Banias, Dothan, and even the upcoming Yonah chips. Most PC geeks see the handwriting on the wall for laptops--"Don't buy until Merom" if you can help it.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE

Really Interesting Point, especially considering we've heard from developers that 10.4.3 contains code for a new Powerbook. And, since that was delayed, the Powerbooks were delayed - hence no reason for Jobs to give a keynote! IT ALL MAKES SENSE...but I'm tired...

Where did you hear that 10.4.3 contains code for a new PowerBook?

I was tired of waiting.... went to the apple website and built a 15" PB. Shipping was 6-8 days, so I held off.

Does this mean anything??

If there is a powerbook update, it certainly won't be dual-core. Check out this link.

It looks like the MPC8641D is delayed. What's the news on the MPC8641?

Any PB update that includes at least a 7448 and an XBright WUXGA will be acceptable.

I'm hoping we get something in the next few weeks, but I'm betting my money it won't be out until the January Keynote. :(

Out all of the above sights I think the magic 8 ball may give the best answer.

The 6-8 day delay happens only if you add certain software titles to your configuration. Any hardware config you do on the 15" PB results in the standard 1-3 days. I know because I just ordered one--Tired of waiting.

no updates, any time soon. spend foolishly on an overpriced Apple and make SJ happy while you incure more debt.

we're all suckers for waiting. yea!

Do I sense sarcasm? Perhaps I should have waited for a new release, but I need a 15" for work to replace my immobile 17" PC beast, and I really don't like Windows as much as Apple. So, it was either buy and Apple now or a PC now ...

Yeah, I'm beginning to loose hope, and soon I will be in a position when I not only just want a 15" PB, but need one. This will be my very first Mac, and I know I wont be that disappointed if an update comes in a while. Should I wait or should I rush to the store and buy one immediately?

Well that's the question, isn't it?! Quite a few people here have said we might have luck on Oct. 11th, if I'm remembering correctly. One or two people thought Oct. 8th. My plan is to wait until the 11th and if nothing happens then (and there's no concrete info on when the update's coming at that point) I'm going to get one, too, cause school started yesterday and waiting much longer would be irresponsible and stupid (for me!). I may not be able to wait even till then but hopefully will...

I have a decent desktop PC that I use at the moment, so I quess I'll wait a bit longer. The worst part is when you have started waiting you can't really stop, because you know that each day of waiting is one day closer to an update.

yeah school started for me yesterday too and i'm in the same boat. im going to pop my wig if PBs aren't updated soon and I cant do my stupid online chem hw on a spanked new laptop.

There's a business school term called the "util" which needs to enter the conversation here. (Interestingly, it is very difficult to Google this term, since it is usually used to mean computer utilities.)

For a background, read the section entitled "32-Marginal utility" on this page (3/4ths of the way down).

How many utils is a PowerBook worth to you right now? Assuming a PowerBook isn't released for, say, a month... how many utils will you lose? How many utils will you gain from the incremental bump you can expect from a refreshed PB line?

Now subtract all the utils you're missing out on right now from the few utils you may gain from a bumped PB.

The equation is indeed difficult when you don't know how long until the new version is released, but even if it's next week, you still miss out on at least a week of use of your new PowerBook (not to mention channel delays that always occur when new products are announced).

If you want the most utils, you'll probably realize that the best option is to just buy the darn PB right now.

The problem is, precisely, that we don't know anything about the update, except that it will happen someday, if we were to know that it will bump up the speed by .3 Ghz and that the hard drive will be upped 20 Gb across the line, maybe we would buy what's available, but just think if they get better displays (after all, this is the HD year, right?) or a faster FSB, or even better GPU's and that would be worth a lot for all of us... I think the next update could be a transition model, where Apple would try to iron out most of the new technologies to be used in the IntelPowerbooks (except the processor itself, of course)... :( I don't really know either.

The truth is only inside Steve's head.

Edit: I don't know if this has been mentioned before, or the reliability of this site, but they say to expect the updates by mid to end october
