2nd question - Okay I just gotta ask. What's the BEST BEST BEST non-Apple laptop out there right now (that any of you know of), in terms of having a lot of this and that but also being under 6 lbs? If you're not allowed to anser, please PM me (do they have a PM section here? haven't checked!). I'm just very curious and obviously Apple doesn't care if they keep my business. I don't *intend* on giving up on Apple but I do want a top of the line computer (around $2100 student price or not much over - at the most) and want to be able to at least compare.

Thanks!

Probably the best non-Apple laptop out there is the IBM thinkpad series. Its very portable and has lots of options for features. After that would probably be a cheap dell.

What's nice in the PC world, is if a new processor comes out, I can go out, buy it that day, and pop it in my machine. Same with a new hard drive, a new video card, etc.
Not necessarily. There is a variety of different processor sockets, FSB speeds, RAM specifications, interface types and so on. Not to mention the different processor families of the x86 architecture.
Today I can't just upgrade my 2-year-old mainboard with a new processor.
These compatibility issues are more severe with Intel than with AMD.

i will also vouch for thinkpads, as i have a t42 for work. very solid laptop.

The only "reason" (or self-delusion, whatever) for an October update at this point would be if the MacOSRumors report is accurate, which, at least as of late, doesn't happen too often. MOSR suggests that one component of the 10.4.3 update still in development and set to be unleashed in mid-October is code support for a new PBG4. No word on what would be new in that design. On the one hand, the fact that new code is necessary suggests that there might be some interesting new hardware architecture (since a hard rive/RAM bump shouldn't require new system code); on the other hand, product updates unaccompanied by a keynote tend not to be very thrilling. All of this asssumes that the MOSR report holds any water in the first place, and there's plenty of reason to doubt it (especially since it comes from MOSR). It's a strange enough report that there just might be some truth to it, you never know, but I'll believe it when I see it. Honestly, who the hell knows what Apple is doing anymore or why? The fog of war created by the Intel transition has made the tea leaves even harder to read. I'm still in the process of saving the money for a 15" PB; once I have enough money I plan to buy whatever is out, because I'm sick of waiting. <Imagine a smilie for utter disgust inserted here.>

october

why october? because its the start of the next quarter and if they expect to keep shareholders happy during that quarter, they need some sort of refresh on the already dated powerbook.

I completely realize that - I was just speaking in generalities for argument's sake. ;)

I hope that when you re-read your rant, that you'll realise that the world is a lot more complicated than is your pointless computer choice.

Maybe you're being facetious. Maybe you're not.

In any case, a Powerbook is a Powerbook is a Powerbook.

BUT of course - hey!: America is America is America... ...right?

I was gonna make the switch... really I was (a nice new 12" PB)

BUT IF I HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR FOR APPLE TO REALIZE THAT IT IS STUPID TO LEAVE THE 12" WITH A FIXED 256MB (FIXED RAM IS DUMB, PERIOD) ... THEN FORGET IT!!!

I'll remain a PC user where we have choices and can get what we want when we want it (hey that sounds like freedom --- which would make apple communist). That's right I'M BACK BABY, I was sucked in for a momment with the slick marketing and sexy OS but now I realized the error of my ways. I want to choose the components of my computer, this is america god-damit I want screens and screens of choices === STEVE JOBS not telling me what to put in my computer! F-That

I'M COMMING HOME........DELL XPS (or maybe Alienware, or FalconNW, or Micro, or Sony --- OH THE CHOICES!!!)

PEACE I'M OTTA HERE (you guys are great and I mean no disrespect) Maybe I'll come back to check out the Mac-Intels (with hopes that Apple decides to treat their customers like adults with upgradable machines and more compontent CHOICES!!!

Cheers to that!

The longer they wait, the better this update hopefully should be. If it was just a small update (few Mhz more, more memory, etc), then it would have happened by now. I think you'll see 2Ghz machines with 100 GB+ HDD and 1GB RAM with better screens.

At least thats what i think... thats why i'm waiting. Otherwise, why wait for just a small little update? Doesnt make sense to me. Now if they do come out with an update in Oct and its really small, then i'll be angry.

These are the ideas I like to hear. Have some hope, people! Jobs has saved us all from the hopelessness that is Windows (yeah, I know I'm not on a Mac yet, but I think I am on one at heart ;) )

I'm not even getting one until probably near graduation, so I'm all for Apple making one last amazing upgrade to the Powerbooks. But yeah, I do understand you guys who are in the market now. That's a tough one. I think the wait will be worth it, though.

Exactly... my bet is decent upgrades coming next week. 2Ghz probably 1GB RAM, etc.

They're waiting for the end of the recent mac mini promotion.

I don't think that they are waiting until the promotion Mac +iPod ends. This is just for students and the European promotion is until October 8th. But I hope we see them soon!

They won't wait, the cram and jam was on last year when they updated the iBooks.

*sniffle* *sniffle*

all i ask...all i ask is for an update. pass 200 mhz fsb... and i buy...i REALLY want to apple. prove that you love me apple...give me an update.

more proof powerbook updates are imminent

i was looking thru the local fry's ad (dallas, tx) today and saw they are offering a 15" 1.5ghz powerbook with combo drive for $1994. ok, sounds normal right? wait a second, it says "before savings" in small print, with a $100 little flag next to it. hmmmm...

i go to the store and check it out. sure enough, it has an $1894 price tag. at first, i'm thinking, "ok, this is just left overs from the models that were released back in 2004." wrong again. this is the newest one that was released back in late january. in fact, it's the same exact model that i currently own.

here is a link to outpost (fry's in disguise): http://shop4.outpost.com/product/43...CH:MAIN_RSLT_PG (for anyone who knows about fry's and outpost, you should know they do not match nor share their prices, yet they are totally affiliated with each other. pretty dumb if you ask me.) this is the same exact powerbook that is in the fry's ad, except the price on the website is normal price.

so anyway, as we all know, any authorized apple retailer cannot sell for more than $5 less than the MAP. how is fry's selling this for $105 less than what apple is selling for at this very moment? the big wigs who run fry's know something...that's why this powerbook is $105 less than normal. i am just surprised apple has not reduced their prices on their own website?

interesting find none of the less. i also will place my prediction of new powerbooks either next week, or the week after. i can feel it.

The reason for the price drop at Fry's is because these models have been out there so long that a drop in price was warranted. The same should be done at the apple store as well. The state of the art PC's that were on sale in January, arnt selling at the same price today. The samet thing goes with cars, you wouldnt pay sticker price for an 04 model year car now would you?

Thats why the powerbook prices need to come down, they're obselete.

2 GHz 7448, yes, 1 GB RAM, no, not standard at least. It just took Apple ages to make 512 MB standard on all machines, so they won't be moving to 1 GB standard anytime soon.

What are guys going to get when the powerbooks do come out? Is anyone going to upgrade all the way to the 2 GB of RAM models? I think I'm going to do the 17'' with the 1 GB on 2 DIMMs because it gets a bit more expensive beyond that point. Is anyone going to load up Linux beside of OS X?

So I know Apple offers student discounts (and I am a student, so it's not a problem), but how do they make sure you are indeed a student? I haven't bought one yet, so I am just curious if you have to give some proof of enrollment or anything.

I will place an order for a 15" PB as soon as it gets updated. :D I'm a student as well, but our university has a special Apple Store; Apple Store on Campus or something, which I can log in to through the university network only.

Sweet deal - that definitely makes it convenient for you!

I'm probably going to get the 12-inch, if they still make it (fingers crossed). They should put the 512 built-in, like the iBook, so I would just put my 512 stick with it, and have 1 GB of memory.

Don't know who I will buy from yet, either: Amazon, retail Apple Store, or Apple.com. Depends who has them first I guess and/or how quickly Amazon puts a rebate on them.

I just bought an iBook through Amazon. This way I got a $100 rebate, didn't have to pay tax, and Amazon gives me 30 days to return it...even if it's opened. No "restocking fee" like Apple has. Apple's return policy is one of their biggest downfalls. If a new PowerBook comes out in the next 30 days, I'll just send the iBook back to Amazon and snag a new PB...and still not pay tax and get it shipped free. I'm a student too, but Amazon's rebates are about the exact same as Apple's student discounts. But add in no tax and a 30 day return policy and I have no reason to order from Apple.

Wow...this is an interesting purchasing option. It almost seems too good to be true. Does anyone have experience with buying a powerbook through amazon, opening and using it, then returning it before the 30 day return period? Seems like a decent thing to do if Apple's not going to upgrade the PB in a week or two. Is there a general feeling about ordering a PB from Amazon?

Argh... I still can't believe they haven't upgraded the powerbook in over 9 months, close to 10 now!

the problem is, amazon might not have a rebate on brand new products that have just been released. so, let's say apple releases new powerbooks next week, amazon might not have a rebate for the new powerbooks for months to come.
