PowerBooks used to be black a few years ago.

Exactly, Apple has moved on. The rest of the computer world has not.

We trust Apple's vision on software, hardware, and the aesthetic aspects of both.

Why would we want them to go back to a style they used several years ago?

Yes, they have moved on from black plastic. Black anodized aluminum is different. It's apparently not appealing to you. I'd really like it though. Besides, I'm not talking about reverting to the Pismo style; just imagine the present PB G4s just with dyed anodized aluminum.

When are we going to get some nice and pretty purple PowerBooks dammit! :p
They're already available.

Whatever, too little too late.

G4 powerbooks will always be slower than Centrino based Laptops - which are advancing further.

( YES - Even if your smoking hash and popping happy pills )

Apple, bring on the Centrino based PowerBooks - next year.

Just before reading this post, I got a phone call informing me that Sony service personnel have successfully replaced the motherboard in my 13.3" 1.6 GHz Vaio and that it will be delivered to my place tomorrow.

I'd trade that 'book any day for one of these upcoming (rumored) Powerbooks.

I am at least hoping that the new PBooks will represent a good bump in specs and hopefully a drop in price ... So if nothing else is much changed, a value increase would be nice.
Completely agree with you. I don't know if I'll be getting the last gen PPC PBook or a Rev. A. Intel. Depends on when Apple releases the Intel books. I know I'll be spending the dough right before I graduate college though, so I won't miss out on educational discounts.

I just checked the article and it said 30 mhz instead of 300 mhz...just 30 mhz...only 30 mhz...sighs.... :(

The article's been changed. It did say 300, now it says 30.

I hope this is NOT true... I just bought my PowerBook this past weekend.

What an interesting attitude...
You got what you paid for.
You can always wait forever for
the next great thing but that is
rather wasteful of your time.
You have an excellent machine
to use now. Updates happen.

Why?

PPC processors will be supported and around for *years* to come yet. Using rosetta you'll be able to run the ( majority )your PPC software on an Intel Machine... Apple announced the switch and releasing the hardware later to give developers time to port their software over to Intel processors - so when Intel hardware does arrive, a lot of software will be ready.

When it comes to PowerBooks - what would you rather to buy - A slow G4 based powerBook or significantly faster Centrino based Powerbook? Those G4 PBs just won't sell.

One thing that AFAIK has not been mentioned before: Why would it not be possible that Apple will offer both PPC and Intel versions of their hardware in the beginning of the switch? It would be a bit hard on customers that require a PPC-based Mac if from one day to the next no useable computers are available to them anymore!

Yup. 20" iMac G4: November, 2003. iMac G5: last day of August, 2004. So we're looking at around 9-10 months if the comparison holds up.

Was It that long? I thought it was an even shorter amount of time, but yeah, I guess you're right. Nonetheless...

What is does say is the following:

"At the high-end, the new PowerBooks are expected to gain a 300MHz speed boost that would put the 17-inch model at or near 2GHz. The new 15-inch PowerBook is expected to step up to the feature set of the current 17-inch PowerBook, but it's unclear if it too is scheduled to be bumped to a 2GHz processor or one running slightly slower."

I say a 300 MHz bump would be awesome!
Where did you get 300MHz from ???
Article says
"At the high-end, the new PowerBooks are expected to gain a mere 30MHz speed boost that would put the 15-inch and 17-inch models at 1.7GHz. Additionally, the new 15-inch PowerBook is expected to step up to the feature set of the current 17-inch PowerBook"

Edit: Just saw other posts to this effect....sorry for redundancy...

I visit AppleInsider, ThinkSecret, and even MacOSXRumors for scoops. When was the last time MacRumors didn't repeat what was said on those sites? What MacRumors does have is the forum traffic.

That's why MR isn't getting sued. ;)

But thats the great thing it gets all sites in one place, and it doesn't get sued!

Something tells me to prepare to be disappointed.

well if its a Freescale it might be an OK speedbump. Depends on what they do with the system board. I doubt they built something from the ground up for this chip. It has to drop in place or they wouldn't be doing anything with it. It has been suggested that there was a model of Freescale chip that could do just that. so...

300 mhz...MUCH better than the iBook update processor speed-wise, but then again, the PowerBook doesn't have much room to improve on other features.

You guys are all falling for the Mhz myth. 300Mhz on the current system without a revamped system board isn't going to really net you squat. Not unless they jack up the FSB. If its still at the current 167Mhz....who cares. Again I will use the analogy of pushing a firehose's water through a straw. Now if somehow Apple jacks it up to at least 200Mhz you might see some nice improvements.

PLEASE OH PLEASE don't get as angry as when the lame ipod/ibook updates were released. We all know these updates will be pathetic... just expect it this time.

Ok, so you would prefer it if Apple were to NOT UPDATE AT ALL? Come on, people, you all are whining way too much. What will it take to please you? Seriously. Take a step back, a deep breath, and think about this.

I guess Apple would have to include a perpetual motion machine and a 42" plasma display on a new Powerbook before you think it's a "worthy update". Pathetic.

Somehow I doubt a Geforce Go 6800 Ultra solution. The Dell XPS laptop isn't exactly small and compact. I'm sure battery life isn't the first priority of a gaming laptop, either.

Isn't Freescale just Moto's semiconductor division?
