What are your estimates on prices for the iMac's up the price or stay relatively the same?

If this rumor is true and you might be able to get a dual 2 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and an ATI 9600 for $1999 (what the dual 1.8 costs now with only 256 and the FX 5200)- then that is a significant price drop from $2499 and it would be golden..

Except that it looks like they'll be crippling the low end again. It won't have all the expandability of the current dual 2.0, and will probably have regular PCI :(

But at least they aren't crippling the FSB's.

I can't afford (or need) more than 4GB of RAM anyway...

With the (edit: U.S.) economy still considered stagnant, I doubt they will up prices.

Not a huge increase in the top end. They must be struggling with those G5's.
Ya no kidding! 2.7!!????? Come on Apple!!! We were supposed to hit 3.0 by now. This is rediculous. 2.7 is merely a 3.0 tease. I would say Apple is MORE than struggling with the g5.

Okay this is utterly scary but I think I'm going to end up being the voice of reason here. Oh boy.

CHILL THE HECK OUT. 2.7 ghz is FAST. Apple doesn't compete with Intel for speed, we have known that for over ten years. Now look, 3 ghz is a ... well it's like DOW 10,000. I mean, you wait for it and you wait for it, and you'll EVENTUALLY get it... but it's not here yet.

Put it this way: very few of those of you complaining would use the full power of the current 2.5 dual G5, so let's just... chill.

I AM however APPALLED that Apple does not make 1gb of ram STANDARD in the G5.

Jeez - you turn your head for a few hours, and suddenly the thread's up to nine pages long!!
:D

Wow ! Indeed.. I have just managed to get through all 11 pages at the moment. Its only taken me about an hour and a half.. infact since my Pwrbook is at 40% battery that sounds about right.

Obviously a lot of exitement and lots of potential for disapointment.

Lots of digs at IBM.. for various reasons.
(They aren't a bad company to work for though.. honest!)
Also remeber IBM make servers.. and do pretty well in this space.

The otherthing that hasn't been mentioned much is why people use the Mac or PC.. don't we use it for applications ? Not really the O/S.
I switched recently (although to be honest I wouldn't really say switched since I still use XP for work and games)..

I switched since Video editing on the Mac is 100 times better than the PC. OK it may take a bit longer to render stuff but I found I saved time since the apps were so much easier to use.

I hope this rumor is true though (even if its just a speed bump), since I'll be ordering a new PMac by the end of next week eitherway.

Don't forget, this is only a rumor. For all we know, there could be a 3.8 ghz in steve's garage :p

I just don't understand where everyone is coming from on this... What about people who are using existing memory? Why add to the price?

Ram slots are clearly one of the features Apple are using to distinguish their lines.

G4
Mac Mini - 1
eMac - 1 + onboard

G5
iMac - 2
PM - 4/8

It would be nice if they offered more slots on most of their line to make high ram a realtively cheap thing. The Mac mini is somewhat cripple when compared to the PB because of this.

I hope to see the next serious upgrade of the iMac get 4 slots but I think that will only happen when the PM goes to something like 16...so maybe a few years off.

I wonder why Apple haven't already given they could then at least match the slots desktop PC users have (4) with the iMac and talk about true 64bit processing indexing 16/32 Gigs for the PMs, and exapandability etc.

1GB (512x2) DDR 3200 by Corsair (#1 ram company) cost about $87 on newegg.com , so the generic slow 3 cas letency memory Apple puts in the G5 should cost about a 1/3 less or more. I don't see where the price hike would come in , it's just greed on apple's part they don't want to cut into thier already inflated margins.

You cannot buy a PC over $1200 with out atleast 1GB DDR3200 thses days. you guys want to see a real Mac Mini/ iMac/ Powermac Killer .......here http://www.e4me.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_T6212 , this is just crazy and it even has an intergrated X300(same performance as 9600) equavalent video board. all this for $579 after a $50 mail in rebate. If we start seeing deals like this from Dell and other , the mac mini will go the way of the cube.

It's deals like this that make Mac's less and less appealing , and Apples adds further insult to injusry by short changing it's loyal customers with crappy upgrades and crippled low end machnines.

I have just managed to also read..
http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/
mentioned earlier..

I just can't belive how true this is.

You never see this sort of discussion (not that I have experienced anyway) on the Windows platform.

Its both great, exciting, sad and simply bizzare.

But I guess there is no stopping this culture just yet anyway..
:)
It keeps me away from the TV I guess.

Well, we have to live with these new PMs for a year at least. That means for a whole year we are going to be a lot slower than Intel. The situation will develop again where pros migrate away because they just can't resist the raw power differential.

Power Macs aside, I think the new iMac is going to be great. They have really been listening about memory and video cards.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

If this were true, most professionals would have migrated years ago.

PowerMac Graphics 9800 BTO not offered.

Just checked recently at the Apple website because I am in the market for a new PM. Has anyone noticed that they recently stopped offering the 9800 Built to order option???? I think this will be the entry level card for the new PM's.

Other than that, I'm pissed unless dual-core.

Considering this rumor came out today, this thread quickly became an 11 page complaint report lol Anyway, at least it kept me busy in work... And as always I am wondering if this Think Secret rumor isnt associated with that Apple lawsuit, maybe Apple decided to drop the lawsuit on one condition, to spread some crap info so that their next announcement will be even bigger and more welcomed then crap going on now... I mean I am no insider but that 2.7GHZ better be a dual core processor and/or power5 derivative or something terribly bad has happened at Apple and IBM... Anyway, one thing is to promise a 3ghz processor within a year and not deliver it (even then they increased the clock rate by 500mhz) but another thing is to miss it second year in a row and to make it all worse, increase the current clock speed by 200MHZ :S Anyway, somehow I have a feeling these specs are as reliable as macosrumors and if they r correct then I dont understand how Apple can call it a year of HD video when basically I will edit encode decode video at the same speed as I did it a year ago... And since Apple wants to gain marketshare, they not only have to come up with hardware thats equivalent to a PC world (in order not to lose any pro buyers to the PC world) but they have to come up with hardware that is faster then what PC world has to offer (since they already have a small market share and how else can u attract anybody to your side by offering inferior hardware for a superior price, yeah I know Mac OS X is great BUT Windows XP is as stable as any Microsoft Consumer OS has ever been)

At 2.7GHz and with two processors each running on a 1.35GHz front side (system) bus, the problem isn't really performance, the problem is the likely price that Apple will be charging for these systems. The price/performance factor on the PC competition is about to change in a major way with the soon-to-be-released dual-core Intel Pentium and AMD Athlon systems.

On optimized, multi-threaded applications the Power Macs will probably continue to benchmark fairly well against PCs, but with both Intel and AMD introducing dual-core processors you'll now be able to buy a dual-core PC for less than a dual-processor Power Mac. That's the real problem, price per processing core. On the desktop, Apple often had a two to one advantage in processor cores, but that is about to disappear. And remember, in some cases the Power Mac dual G5s were already having problems against single-core, single-processor PCs.

The dual-core Pentiums and Athlons will also strike right at the heart of what used to be the dual Power Mac's strength, multi-threaded content creation tasks. The performance might be roughly comparable, but the dual-core PCs will cost less (initially, maybe not by much, but in a few months the differences could be very significant).

so rather than installing your own faster memory, you want Apple to include more of the slower memory... at the same price.
As another MR regular says...
meh.
I'd rather they just drop prices a bit instead or keep the prices the same and tweak something else.
Leave the choice of the quantity/type memory to the user to add at purchase or later.

Dual 2.0

broken_keyboard said:
Pretty disappointing that they didn't make 3GHz on the PM. Doesn't the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme 840 go at 4GHz?

I was super sure I wanted to upgrade my 2003 Dual 2.0 but will have to wait and see now.

If you need to upgrade your dual 2.0.

Wow

All the talk about the Power Macs supposedly being lack luster upgrades. There is bigger news here people, the eMac is still here!!!!!! That should be making headlines! I really thought the eMac would be no more, especially with the overwelming success of the Mac Mini. Correct me if im wrong, but those updated eMac specs are very similar to the current Mac Mini. So, instead of spending all this money developing another eMac or updates, they could have scrapped the eMac, upgraded the video card of the Mac Mini, and if possible, inked a deal with a larger company to provide cheaper monitor solutions. Sounds like $$ to me.. ;)

It might very well be funny, however, if they're dual core my credit card will be whimpering and not laughing.

I don't have to worry about all that jazz, im a student. That also means i have to use a windows machine, so that's hurtin' more than the credit card. Switchin' to a 15'' Powerbook for college, no doubt. Thanks Grandma. :)

It just can't be those configs

I just want to add a few words about the timing of the announcement. If it is at the NAB (http://www.nabshow.com/) next Sunday, it has to be something bigger than the rumor of Think Secret. NAB is a very big show. Apple cannot announce something as little as a minor speed bump at that show. It must be significant enough. Dual-dual 2,7 GHz or dual 3GHz is the minimum. Apple usually announces softwares at the NAB and the company will announce many updates on that front at the show. Apple doesn't need to announce new hardware to attract the attention of the medias. I'm sure it will be something good. Well ... I'm hoping. Otherwise I'm gonna delay my buy ... again.
