Anyone with bizarre notions that Apple is holding something back for WWDC, give me a break! They have never released a revision with a huge increase that quickly and they never will. The time between speed bumps gets longer, not shorter as it does in the PC world.

Except when they went from the B&W G3 to the G4s. That was 9 months, but the announced the G4 shift about six months after it was introduced.

That said, the more realistic and appropriate approach would be for Apple to *add* a new model to the line up at WDDC. A dual dual-core or something at the very top end.

Don't count on it. The lowest price Digital Media has for double layer DVDs is $234.96 for a spindle of 50 (about $4.70 per disc).

That is not anything you could want to get for a general backup medium. I would suspect this would be for those very special occasions. :D

I love it.

Apple has reduce the price on their monitors TWICE in the last 8 months and there is actually someone bitching about it.

My 20" ACD cost 1200.00 a little more than a year ago (old style).

$699.00 EDU for an aluminum work of art and someone's bitching?

The 23" is down to $1299.00 EDU. I'm having to bolt myself down not to buy one. The extra space would be awesome for my photo work.

Shutup already.

Highly likely. Just wait and see. :p

MacRumors forums are like crack-cocaine.

I'm quitting cold turkey. I absolutely love the Dual 2.5 GHz macahine delivered to me last August. For audio editing the amount of power is just plain stupid. With pro apps like Final Cut, Digital Performer, PS, and others, the G5 GETS THE JOB DONE. Period. And the new Dual 2.7GHz will do it that much faster. I feel like the people complaining fall into three categories:

1. Folks with an ageing G4 or even G3 powermac who are thinking of upgrading. They are so nervous about buying a new machine, and want it to last them "forever." Guys and Girls, I beg you, the waiting game is NOT worth it! I played it for over a year, and that was one year of slowed productivity. Now I've got my mac, am using it like mad, and could not be happier. There will always be new technologies. Want a new PM? Then BUY ONE. Use it for 3-5 years, sell it for a great resale value. (500 MHz g4 Cubes still go for 450$ on EBAY!) And buy the next stupid fast quadruple core g6, g7 apple machine.

2. Gamers. Buy an X-box. its like 100 dollars. Bottom line, the problem with gaming on macs is NOT the hardware, its the fact that developers spend no time optimizing code for OSX.

3. Failed hardware/software developers. You applied for that job at Apple and never got called back? You think you can do a better job? Then get to it sonny...and stop whining.

On that note, i regularly frequent the forums at OSXAUDIO.com. There is this one moderator named Old Dog, who mixes and records all his audio on a Dual 450 MHz G4, and has been for some time. In his sig there is the simple line, which i believe should be added to all forum members' mantra lists:

"Remember, no whining!"
-Old Dog

And so, mac rumors, I will no longer be gracing your pages for the latest apple rumors and page after page of whining and ranting. I'm going to go to my studio and get some work done on my g5.

byebye now

You will be back!

I have a question slightly off topic:

Why aren't PCI slots referred to in the iMac? Does it function without them?

Correct! the iMac has no PCI slots. What you buy is what you get. No add ons except RAM.

Hey! Which is better?

9600XT 128MB or 9650 256MB?

Serious answers only - please dont say its 9650 soley based on 256MB.
Will all know about the MHZ Myth and also the MB Video Card Myth as well.

Bad Update... But Still Good Power Macs

No they are not dule core or 3ghz but they are still a fast computer. For photoshop and video work I have found that a g5 is about 60 % faster than a P4 per Ghz. This means that a single 2.7 would be equal to a 4.32 P4. Add to the equation a secong chip which yield about 20% more performance, and a top of the line power mac would be equal to a 5.2 Ghz P4, or a chip that could rival or beat a current 3.2 extreme. While AMD chips have similar power per Ghz, AMD currently tops out at 2.6 Ghz and is not as good at floating point calcs. Given the industry wide slump in microprocessors ibm/apple has managed keep producing some of the best macines on the planet for creative professionals.

unfortunatly I haven't seen benchmarks for the new card. The extra RAM will come in handy in new games (bigger textures) but the main advantage to the new card seems to be it is cheap and able to support Apple's 30" display...

As for the speed difference in the two cards: I'd love to see some comparative benchmarks.

Well, you're comparing two things at once here. Let's take games as an exemple. They need to display 3D objects with textures. Those textures need to be stored somewhere. The most efficient method is on-board memory.

So you have to balance the GPU power with the VRAM.

As for specific comparisons between the 9600XT and the 9650, I have no idea. I'm sure Tom's Hardware has a comparison chart somewhere...

.................

Anyway..... Does anyone has an idea as of for how many generations did Apple signed the contract with IBM and its processor development/manufacturing? I mean, how do you count processor generations, for example, is 970fx and 970mp same generation since they ae power4 derived, or for example 970fx and 970mp are the same generation and lets say 980 (power5 derivative) is another generaton? (and yes i know, up till today only 970fx actually exists..lol)
Anyway, I doubt we will see any major upgrades to the Powermac line, this .2GHZ speedbump, just weeks away from WWDC in June seems to me that nothing major will happen until at least January 2006... But I guess the .2 bump has one positive side to it which is I suspect the next Powermac revision will be probably a total overhaul and Power5s are comming... and also, I dont understand on what basis people dismiss power5 rumors and yet it seems as if everyone accepted 970mp (power4 derivative) to be an announced processor when in fact its about as real as power5 derivatives, only one document surfaced concerning the 970mp (about heat issues, pretty lame) and yet people dont realize that 970 is 3 years old (yes I know it appeared in Macs in June 2003 which makes it 2 years but the processor has been in use before then) which by todays standards means its about to be replaced by a new architecture...

As far as updates beyond this one for the PowerMacs go, I strongly believe that the whole DDR2 thing won't last long enough before DDR3 replaces it. After all, graphics cards already have it in the form of GDDR3. Therefore, I strongly believe that Apple will skip DDR2 and go straight to DDR3.

Here are some other things which I think have a better than 50% chance of occuring with the next PowerMac update:
1. CPU(s) from a different line than the PPC970 and PPC970fx. Let's face it - the 970 line is simply running out of growth room. I remember that IBM predicted that 2.7-2.8 GHz would be as high as PPC970 would ever reach. We're there now.
2. Some other feature or combination of features that will wow all Mac users and at least some of the non-Mac users. I just can't pin down what that is, though.

When we do get dual core and pci-express, there will be somethin' else for them to complain about.
Perhaps I'm wrong but the G5 2.3 and 2.7 mobos have 3 PCI-X slots which is a faster interface than PCI Express

Oh well, now he won't be around to see that he referred to a guy named "Big Daddy" as "Old Dog" :)

I could've sworn Apple said that all g5s now come with 512 MB of ram and that the single 1.8 was dropped.... guess I was wrong. It should've been single 2, dual 2.3, dual 2.5, dual 2.7 (or 3!)
the 9650 supports 1 30-inch display, but the 9800 doesn't? wt?

Dual 2.5 IS Water Cooled and NOT Part of the New Lineup. Dual 2.3 is NOT Water Cooled

Well..can anyone share his/her opinion about why Apple only came up with 0.2GHz update after almost a year? I guess most of the readers on this forum think it's due to technical difficulties, but is it really the sole reason?..

I'm pretty sure you are wrong about this. If this were true why would Apple be using AGP in its G5s?
PCI-E is definatly potentially faster.

All the doom and gloom aside, has anyone else realised that RAM is now alot cheaper. I remember that the first G5's cost like AU$8000 to get 8GB now it's like AU$2800 edu. or $1300 for 4GB. That's fairly good in my book. Because now it's seemingly just as cheap and easy in Australia just to order my system with all the Ram i need.

Did you see my post earlier on page 13 of this thread? (Note: this post assumes that you have the posts per page set to the default of 25.)

Indeed disappointing but a REALITY CHECK IS REQUIRED

A 200mhz increase is disappointing to say the least. So is having no DDR2, SLi, PCI-Express, Blu-Ray or Dual Core.

But can we have a look at the beasts on offer now and compare
Say lets give $5000 for the PowerMac and $5000 for the Dell Precision 670

Would you prefer A) or B)

• Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5
• 4GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 4x512
• 250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
• nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb
• Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)
• 16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

For US$5098 - 13% for edu

OR THIS DELL

Dell Precision Workstation 670
-Dual 3.6GHZ XEON (Dual 3.6 gets raped by the G5 in productive usage) (maybe not in solitaire though)
-2GB DDR400
-250GB
-64MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro NVS 280, Dual VGA Capable
-Dell 2005FPW
-16X Dual Layer DVD RW

for a measly US$5310

Not too bad $300 cheaper, way better processors, twice the memory, way better graphics, a good looking display.

The Dell just got bashed. Sorry to all you Dell loving people but your machines aren't comparable. I've got a good idea, why don't you start up dellrumours.com and whinge about why their systems are inept
