I forgot to add Norton to the 670 Precision as well. I also forgot to add a good operating system, not to mention some decent video, audio and dvd authoring software which is free on the Mac

Apple should go back to its roots! Computers!
This was already explained earlier in this thread.iGary said:Can someone explain the difference between PCI-X and PCI-E ?
JRM PowerPod said:A 200mhz increase is disappointing to say the least. So is having no DDR2, SLi, PCI-Express, Blu-Ray or Dual Core.
But can we have a look at the beasts on offer now and compare
Say lets give $5000 for the PowerMac and $5000 for the Dell Precision 670
Would you prefer A) or B)
Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5
4GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 4x512
250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb
Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)
16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
For US$5098 - 13% for edu
OR THIS DELL
Dell Precision Workstation 670
-Dual 3.6GHZ XEON (Dual 3.6 gets raped by the G5 in productive usage) (maybe not in solitaire though)
-2GB DDR400
-250GB
-64MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro NVS 280, Dual VGA Capable
-Dell 2005FPW
-16X Dual Layer DVD RW
for a measly US$5310
Not too bad $300 cheaper, way better processors, twice the memory, way better graphics, a good looking display.
The Dell just got bashed. Sorry to all you Dell loving people but your machines aren't comparable. I've got a good idea, why don't you start up dellrumours.com and whinge about why their systems are inept

saxmonster said:If I buy a power mac g5 from the refurbished discount section of the online apple store will I be able to go back and place another order under the academic education store and buy an apple care for it with that discount of the education store. The apple care will of course be for this PM G5. I already tried to combine the store cart as one but it didn't work so i think I will have to do to seperate orders. Will having two seperate orders not allow me to get the apple care for this new machine? or do I have 90days to get a apple care plan?
Thanks in advance

Now I am just having trouble deciding whether to get the new dual 2.3 edu 2498 or a dual 2.5 on sale edu 2698, or even a refurbished 2.5 for 2299. I am going to do all the RAM upgrades myself and am just going to purchase the mac as is. I will be using it for video editing and effects work.
Suggestions???

Snark said:What you're missing is that these are *speed* bumps as well as feature bumps. The old 2.0 DP wasn't "crippled" and dropped to the DP entry level slot; it got a speed bump to 2.3Ghz along with the feature bumps. What was the 1.8DP got a speed bump to 2 Ghz and feature tweaks.
The old model of the 2.0 DP machine has been discontinued and has been *replaced* by the 2.3Ghz machine.

If you want a nice combo hardware/software then get a Mac.
I trully believe the only reason people are bitching is not that they need more power but rather because they feel they can't put one down on the x86 users because now Apple has the better/faster hardware...
Kind of sad really.
