I went to the Apple education store then clicked the RED TAG SALES
This was under Sales NOT refurbs.

I have to send in for the $9.95 Tiger upgrade when I get my machine.

Now I'm thinking pretty hard about getting the Dell 24" display
with the money I saved.

I'm considering the same exact purchase (PMac and Dell 24") though I'm curious if you're SURE you can get the Tiger upgrade for $9.95. Is this confirmed?

Otherwise, I might just go with one of the new 2.0's with Tiger preinstalled.

ok i see what i did wrong, I can get the academic discounts under the red tag stuff then sales tab but it still says 1699 for a dual 2.0 g5. how are you getting 1599.00 for the same one? Will apple have a 10% off on the store when tiger is released at 6pm tommorrow?

what is this 10% igary?

But look at the tables that I posted, clearly x16 PCIe is faster than any PCI-X - even the new (and nearly non-existent) PCI-X 2.0.

PCIe is taking off rapidly, even my recent servers have PCIe slots for high bandwidth cards (10GbE, IB, FC). PCI-X 2.0 isn't taking off at all.

Ah, ok... It's amazing what you can do with numbers... Incidentally, there's a very good book, called 'How to lie with statistics', it's a *must* read!

Anyways, the actual PCIe x16 is only 8GBps is because somehow the fact that it's 'duplex rate' gets always omitted (sales propaganda)... The problem why it is not as successful as PCIe is due to the fact that PCI & PCI-X are parallel (vs. PCIe being serial) and parallel hardware at a high speed is dead expensive!

You are more than welcome to read the technical details:-

Anyhow, this all talk is very theoretical, as Apple is still stuck with the classical von Neumann architecture...

wow....1st time poster, long time reader so im sure im going to hold alot of credibility but ive never heard this much bitching before.

Let me see if i got this right, Prices go down, on more power units or for the same price, we can get a more powerful unit (same thing) and people are still bitching?

Nobody said this was a new G5 or a revamp. you guys hype yourself up, then when the product is released, you sit around and cry about it. Apple promised something and they will eventually deliver it. would u rather have 3ghz out with a lot of problems, or newer systems that are not as fast but stable.

I own a 1.6 G5 and im a film majore and it does my stuff just fine. Would I love to have a 3ghz, sure. hell ill take a duel 2.3 right now but im fine. Im shy of a year with my 1.6 and its a been a blast with it so far.

Did pentiums go from 3.0 to 4.0 in one update? no. they eventually, went to 3.2 then 3.4 and slowly 3.6 in storms. eventually, 4.0 will hit.

Also we forget, if Tiger continues the trend of their other OS releases, the system will better perform with those specs.

I agree with you, the updated PM is a good deal. However, the situation now seem familiar for us. Apple wasn't able to make breakthroughs in the processor technology, so they can only offer price cuts instead. And then a year later, the speed of iMac catches up with PM, and we got no where to go. And then there goes that "GHz doesn't matter", "what matters is the software", etc..

Second, Steve not only promised 3Ghz, he promised 3Ghz by 2004. I don't mean to blame him, because I think they indeed run into technical difficulties. However, compared to the confidence he had at 2003, it's quite a frustration for us loyal Apple fans as weel.

Nevertheless, we're all loyal Apple fans, and we all love Apple. With Tiger shipping tomorrow, plus all the future updates to come, I think they're still doing a good job. And please..we need those dream PM machines..

yesterday i bough the dual1.8 in the refurb section for 1500$ and i then found out refurbs didnt count for the up-to-date program so i was a lil dissapointed. then today i tried goin into the edu store then sale section and i got a discount there. i didnt know i could get an edu discount in the sale section so i was able to get a brand new dual1.8 for the same price $1500. so i ordered that and cancelled the refurb and now i can do the up-to-date program. so im pumped.

OK - so you admit that PCIe x16 is at least 4 times faster than the fastest PCI-X in a Mac.

BTW, that same "sales propaganda" is used by Apple extensively - for example the two 32-bit double-pumped front side busses on the PPC970 magically get added and multiplied together for the sales literature.

So PCIe's advantage is just that it is faster and cheaper?

Very nice, did Google find that page for you? Did you notice that you need to be a member of the PCI-SIG in order to read most of the links?

BTW, did you find the make and model of your workstation and its PCI-X graphics card yet?

No offence, but i think recent releases have proved that the tuesday-upgrade concept is no longer relevant.
I think Apple's trying some new tactics to confuse the rumor sites. This is one of them.

All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off.

hahahahahaha. yes. the iPod indeed did not become 40% of apples revenue. :D

heh. I guess i see where people are coming along. Ive only been a apple user for shy of a year so I never got much into the apple talk till the last 5-6 months myself. if anything, I myself have alot of room to bitch away because I waited for 2 months for the new G5's to come out and they didnt, so I ordered mine and once arrived, a week later, the Duel G5's were announced and my 1.6 was much cheaper =/ hahahaha

but yea, also, I think people seem to want the 3GHZ just because they want to say were close to P4 users, not because they truely will need the power of it cause lets be realistic, unless were making a pixar film, few of us truely need the raw power of a 3GHZ (unless playing games i guess..even then? but then again, I use my pc for games if i want so)

but yea my 2cents

I called the APPLE store on this, just got off the phone. He said he would set up the purchase and direct me to a link where i would have to mail off for the u/g to Jaguar, and yes, that would be $9.95... so you're good to go.

Why the Dell over (say) and HP L2335, if I may ask?

No 3GHz O.K., but no dual core?

I'm pretty dissapointed about this. I'm also kinda happy because my single PowerMac 1.6 is still in the running, but I was hoping for a high end dual core. I'm holding out hope that the terrific suprise MacNN talked about was that all G5s were dual-core all along, and all it will take is the firmware upgrade that will come on Friday to unveil the mother of all 'Gotchas.' I saw a pretty interesting article though that the P4 overclocked to 4 GHz couldn't really best the 2.6 GHz FX-55. In fact, the P4 had to be freon cooled and OC'ed to 5 + GHz to even get into the realm of the FX-55 http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1787/ . That says something for the power of good chip design, which the G5 has.

After seeing that article, I'm starting to believe some of those crazy benchmarks that Apple has posted recently, and I know that at some things my 1.6 G5 beat my old 3.0 GHz P4. Maybe it is really tough to get a chip with short instruction pipelines to 3.0. Also, maybe Apple had the dual-cores, but never could get them to work thermally, ie. the G5 running with full fans all the time, although this I find hard to believe.

I don't remember Steve PROMISING anything... Sure, he did say the G5 will be at 3ghz within a year, but I took it as him laying out a roadmap.. but the road isn't always smooth.

I guess I just don't see what all the big fuss is about. I'm not in the market for the fastest of the fast power mac, maybe that's why. And what about the amd and intel 64 bit chips? How fast are they? I don't know about Intel, but AMD's fastest is only 2.6Ghz.. OH WAIT! GHZ Doesn't matter! right?

My main point is.. steve didn't promis anything.

According the new ThinkSecret article (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0504newg5.html), the MP processors are not in production at IBM yet, so Apple had to scramble and produce something that was at least a little faster than upcoming iMacs. I'm sure that they waited a bit so that these new units would ship with Tiger. The article says the new processors start at 3 GHz. Also says that there's lots of clues in Tiger that Tiger was built to handle these machines. So it appears that Apple's simply waiting on IBM (so let the various, they should have gone with AMD side threads start up anew, although I believe IBM produces some of AMD's chips). That said, it then seems likey that these MP machines won't be shipping until the fall. It would be an interesting marketing question to see if they'd wait until MacWorld Jan to do a big release if they could actually ship in Nov. It definitely seems that if IBM is having trouble now, its also likely that these machines will be constrained when they first come out…

I am not disappointed with this upgrade, since im a soon to be switcher, the d2.7 if fast :) plus you get a better grapgics card in the d2.7 model (radeon of sum sort) , lookis like ill be holding off though, ill be waiting until june and see what happens

i got quoted

d2.7 w/30" for £1719.88 + £1777.80 =total £3497.60 with my edu

thats from apple

KRCS quoted me a slightly higher price

umm.. the FX-57 is 2.8ghz being released soon.

Also i can't really see why apple doesn't put a better video card.. are they that cheap that they have to put a $35 dollar video card in a $3000 machine?

A lot of you people seem to be very dissapointed at Apple for not providing a high enough speed bump, RAM, harddisk, or whatever it is now. I was just wondering... why the f*** do you really care? Hands up people (of everybody who contributed to making this thread 17 pages long) who are actually going to buy the new PowerMac. I bet it's not a lot of you. If you're not it really shouldn't matter to you, and if you are you should be happy that you're gonna get a faster processor and a cheaper LCD screen than you were gonna get had the update not come.

I'm gonna make the switch to Apple as soon as the new iBook comes out. And even if the update is not gonna be very impressive I'm not gonna bitch and whine about it. If I can get Bluetooth and 512 RAM standard that's gonna be great, and if not, well that's ok because buying it now is not gonna get me a better deal.

Honestly, you people should stop bitching so much!

It is very likely that a 10% discount will be offered at the "Tiger World Premiere." At the Jaguar and Panther release, after the purchase of the new OS, then you would receive 10% off of your other purchases of hardware and most software.

The education discount can't be combined with the possible 10% discount. Must use separately.

In case if you prefer to read the discussions selectively, the conversation was about the general architectures, not about what Apple currently offer, in case if you've not noiced there are *no* Apple manufactured computers with PCIe, so I don't really see any point in your remark!

I never said that Apple didn't use sales propaganda, in fact hey are great at it!

AidenShaw said:

no, just cheaper... PCIe G2 is faster that any PCI-X though...

AidenShaw said:

As a matter of fact, *no*, it wasn't google, but if you can't find technical information yourself, there's no reason why you shouldn't cough up US$3000 if you want to have a technical arguement as opposed to making uninformed guesses...

AidenShaw said:

I never had to *find out* the make and model of my work station, but if you are that ignorant, I *will* post a photograph of the PCI-X graphics card! In fact, if you actually *bother* to read the discussion, instead of picking out random bits and attempt to be a smart arse, you'll find out what graphics card I have...

Here's the state of AGP/PCI-X/PCIe affair:
PCIe definitly faster than AGP, latest PCI-X versions are faster than PCIe (oh and to stop more smart arse remarks, I do mean PCIe x16 here), but since Apple offer neither PCI-X graphics cards nor PCIe interfaces, there doesn't seem to be a point to discussing this further, so not to provoke any more derailing of this discussion...

Why bitch about the people bitching? It's just as futile. The PowerMac line has a variety of shortcomings, this update did very little to change that, a lot of people who want to buy PowerMacs but feel the shortcomings arn't worth the cost, and should be allowed to voice their displeasure.

Honestly, I'd have been happy if they'd have provided a nice hardware RAID implementation, or at the very least room for multiple drives/optical. The Mega/Giga doesn't really bother me, but the PowerMacs are pretty feature poor as well.

Doesn't matter if anyone here buys or not. What matters is how the media, consumers and tech market look at Apple products. A good, competitive or advanced piece of hardware keeps Apple alive longer. It doesn't matter if you are personally happy with it. If you care about being an Apple user you have to care how the rest of the world looks at it.

If you want your favorite team to continue they have to knock one out of the park more than once a year, otherwise the players and fans leave.

Given Apple's share price just dropped on this upgrade and the relative performance this month I wouldn't say anyone is that impressed.

I think that many of our forum members do represent the larger consumer opinion. You are correct Apple must sell to stay in business. I also think that Apple is offering the best of what is currently possible to technologically produce.

So I can't use an education discount on top of a 10% or the other way 'round? I was really hoping I could cash in on an iPod photo with my edu (320$) and then get another 10% off, that'd be like 288$!!!! Suck.

Is this 10% offered online as well?
