The real question is "Do the PowerMac power cables have the new SATA connector or the old 4-pin Molex connector?

Various models of SATA drives come with the new connector, the old connector, or both....

I've also seen Molex -> SATA power adaptors - short cables to let you plug a disk with the new style power socket into a system with the old style Molex plugs.

Yes that is what I'm asking does anyone know

ME,

Though I am going to wait a few months to get it. I have and OLD G5 Dual 2.0 that I picked up at the beginning of this Month.

Some say it is not needed for a G5 PM, but going by resale market on Ebay and other places. Powermacs with Applecare sell easier, and sometimes for more if they have at least 1 year of apple care. I know I will NEVER get my money's worth out of it, but I still want the peace of mind.

definitely for a 'book

How many people actually buy or intend to buy the Applecare Protection Plan with their new computer?

Two friends have had 'books die after the normal warranty expired - the one who had Applecare was much happier than the other.

Laptops lead a hard life, the extended warranty is more often needed....

Congrats, and I wish many happy years of use to you! Part of me wishes I could afford the new 2.7. My Rev-B 2.0 should hold me for 2 years or so, and I hope Apple is still producing Powermac computers by that point in time. This isn't my first apple, but it is my first ever brand new apple computer!

Yeah, I suspect you will continue to get a number of years on your Rev-B2.0. What type of work do you do on it?

How does that bad boy run??? Any benchmarks to post???

I don't have any benchmarks for you, sorry. Because of having Tiger preinstalled, I am still in the process of updating all of my audio libraries for the DAW since many require re-registration/authorization updates for the new hardware. Once I get all of my software back up to spec, I'll let you know how Digital Performer 4.5 flies.

6.5GB RAM?! Yikes That had to put a dent in the pocket book...

I won't lie to you, this system definitely put a big dent in the pocketbook, but it has been a purchase I have been waiting for quite a while to make until I felt it was the right time to jump. I was sufficiently pleased with the update, and went for it. 6.5gig was about 1.5 lower than my original plan, but the store didn't have an extra 2 gig pack to throw in for me... but, now that I have 6.5, I will just go with it and see how quickly I max things out to see if I actually need that extra 1.5 in there...

I am

The main reason that I had to get a new powermac this week is that my old dual 1gHz Quicksilver died two weeks ago (looks like the cpus are fried). It would have been three years old this August. I leave my machines on 24/7. Turned it off before a vacation. When I got back - no joy. So, for $219, I took it (brings the price of my new revB 2.0 - $1747 - to $1966 - still less than the crippled revC 2.0!)

i'm not going to whine, but let me try to shed some light on why those of us who aren't buying this update want to see better upgrades in general...

the better THIS upgrade is, the better future upgrades will end up being (ie, ones that we may end up buying). so if this upgrade had pcie, better graphics available, a bit more ram, and/or faster processors, then in the future, all these things would be minimums, rather than hoping they were coming along....

so, it's not like people can't be disappointed simply because this wasn't their time to purchase.

I passed on it this time.... That after getting it with the last 4.
I think I will just get it when they send me the renew email in a year.

apple are being wankers not puting any x800 video cards to choose. they did this probably so microsoft cant send any more xbox 2 developer kits.

On Second Thought

Thankfully I didn't place the last order I had in my cart and was able to switch from the 2.0 to the 2.3. I finally upgraded my desktop after after 5 years and here it is (I'll upgrade to more RAM later):

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3GHz
Part Number: Z0BL
Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5
2x400GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
2GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x1GB
None
Mac OS X Tiger - U.S. English
Accessory kit
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL w/256MB GDDR3 SDRAM
Apple Keyboard & Apple Mouse - U.S. English
Bluetooth Module + AirPort Extreme Card

..also got the 23 inch screen. Now if I can just keep myself from spontaneously combusting before it gets here.

I ordered my very first Mac today. I ordered the dual 2.0 GHz system with 1 gig of RAM, 160 gig drive, the bluetooth/wireless combo, 20" Cinema display, and a .Mac account to top it off. :D

Hopefully it will all get here next week.

I've had AppleCare on my computers of the past. Also plan on purchasing Applecare on my Mac's in the future. It has been well worth the money on my wife's PowerBook. Just provides security.

I almost did not purchase AppleCare, but I then thought about what my wife would have said... "Think of it as an investment." So, I got AppleCare to protect my investment. It didn't hurt that the 20" Cinema display that I threw in with the Power Mac system is automatically covered since I purchased it with the system.

Hands up people (of everybody who contributed to making this thread 17 pages long) who are actually going to buy the new PowerMac.

I ordered mine today, but then again, I haven't been complaining about the upgrades, because I have never owned a Mac. I ordered the dual 2.0 GHz system and I know that I will be very happy with it compared to what I have been running.

Just since everyone is talking about it......if you buy a mac the within the first year you can buy applecare or do you have to do it together with the purchase of the machine

Rev B for me

Went with the rev b dual 2 for 1699 edu. Saved $500 or so from the rev c 2.3, so I can use that for ram, s/w, and maybe a video card even though neither me nor my wife (it is mostly her machine) is a big gamer. Kicking myself for not doing it lo those many months ago, but like a lot of foks here, I wasn't thinking incremental speed bumps for the next REV!

Anyhoo, should be a BIG u/g over the g4-450 w/1g sonnet proc u/g she is running now. Waited a couple of days from when I first looked at it, and when I got it, apple rep said it would ship w/Tiger either preloaded or in the box. 6-12 months from now when (if?) apple comes up w/ a fancier machine, or the REV we were all hoping for this go 'round, the value of this box should as much since it is already reflected to some extent. And yes, I bought applecare for the peace of mind, although the ONLY thing that ever happened to that g4 450 in the 5-6 years we've had it was a dead power supply for $125...

Got it!

Ordered the same on Thursday and lo and behold - it showed up last night with a fresh copy of Tiger in the box! Great machine. The 4 gig of ram should show up today or Wednesday. I got it fo 1747 (corp discount). I too plan on replacing the vid. card - OWC has the 9800 mac SE for like $279 or so...

Enjoy!

Same here. My wife and I do not play many games. The games that we do play are easily displayed with the lower end video cards. You know... solitaire and bejeweled.

Yep... same here. I figured the extra money was worth it for AppleCare spread out over three years since it covers the Power Mac, the Cinema display, and I can use the number to call even with Apple software questions.

What happened to the 2.5?
I figured the middle configuration would come in at 2.5GHz not 2.3GHz.
-sigh- wow this was such a letdown. yes there were some nice hard drive and superdrive updates... but it feels more like icing than a full honest upgrade

I have no idea why Apple dropped the 2.5 GHz model. You're right that it seems like extra icing...but at least we've made forward progress, right?

I would have expected Apple to save the 2.3 GHz chip for their XServe...unless they plan on moving it to the 2.5 GHz chip, which would explain why the PowerMacs aren't using it now.

Well i cant see apple keeping the 2.5 in storage till the next Xserve update. theycould have used the 2.3 in the low end, 2.5 in the middle and then used the 2.7 in the high end, that would have made a better update lineup.
