I just ordered the PM G5 2.7DP and I am stoked. I've been crawling along lately with a graphite PM G4 and this will be a good upgrade for me. My big decision is, do I put the G5 on my desk so I can stare at it or do I put it under the desk where my G4 used to be? :)

I applaud you on your decision. That will be an awesome setup. Does you Graphite happen to be a dual 450? Is so it's the Mac that I'm using at the moment. I think that it was the best looking of all three designs. Currently have my Mac on he desktop. Just think that they look so great, that I would hate to hide my Mac.

I don't know if my opinion will matter in this situation but....

If anyone will recall a lot of people made fun of my decision to get a dual G4 over a G5 <cut> But that's just IHMO. I realise some people may actually need the power but I am willing to bet that number is far and few.

Personally, I really do need the speed - I can't wait to try out my dual 2.7, should be here Thursday. But of course, if the computer's speed and only the computer's speed were my goal, I would get a dual Opteron for about the same price, and it would be probably be faster for certain tasks. But, I would be less productive, and speed for me means more than just the computer's speed. I have used Linux and other unices, and I find I am most productive on OS X.

(FYI, I am a consultant, and for my work I develop custom numerical software for the oil and gas industry. I do also have a dual Xeon running Linux, but I log into it remotely, I never use it as a desktop machine).

Nah, mine's a first gen single processor. It is a nice looking machine though and I'm thinking of moving it to the living room as an iTunes player for my stereo and internet browser on my TV.

My new G5 should ship tomorrow! w00t!

My only complaint is that I was waiting for the Dual 2.0 to come down in price. It did, but without PCI-X slots. So I can't buy the HD card I wanted. Will have to spend the same money anyhow.

This is exactly why I bought a NEW RevB 2.0 dually at the education store
Red Tag Sale for $1699. the day the updates were announced.

The Rev B's still let you install the full 8 GB's of RAM and have 3 PCI-X slots.
The newest Rev C's are crippled in that respect only allowing up to 4 GB's of RAM and 3 standard PCI slots.

Actually, the PowerMacs have 4 total expansion slots, it's just that one is used by the factory installed GPU card.

I decided that the better expansion capabilites of the Rev B were more important to me than the latest features.
I can get a dual layer DVD drive, a second SATA HD and a better GPU card any time.

This 2.0 is schweeeet! :D

My order still says "Open" next to it in the order status.

Does this mean it is being built and it will just change to shipping when its ready ?

Or is it waiting to be built

Apple simply doesn't tell us. We don't know whether it's being built now or on the waiting list for being assembled before it gets shipped - like you said, "Open" is all we know.

I just checked my order status and it says that it has moved from the Manufacturing stage to the Processing Shipment stage.

It would be cool if it ships today. Monday, the 9th, is my birthday! :D

Mine got bumped last night from "ships on or before 4-May" to "ships on or before 13-May" :(

Must have had a link in the cooling system or something? :D

Sorry... just kidding. I do hate to hear that. I know that must be a tremendous let down.

Since Monday is your birthday, hope that your Mac will arrive on your birthday. That will be an awesome present. ;)

I think that open means that Apple hasn't started to work on your order yet. Processing is when they are getting it ready to ship.

How bizarre. I just checked my order status and it's done the exact same thing. I've got my original order (which had been delayed this morning) which lists as "replaced" and now a second order which is just in "processing order" state. How nutty.

My custom dual 2.7 was ordered 4/30 and is still in manufacturing and says it will ship on or before may 9 it originally said 3-5 days when I ordered it I just hope this does not turn into the dual 2.5 fiasco please let us know if any one gets their dual 2.7

I got my dual 2.3 the day they were announced. I got my name on the list at the local Apple store and got a call within 30 minutes. Wasn't expecting a call for a few days to a week. Only problem, no Tiger "official" support until the 29th.

I'm very happy so far. Been a MAC user since March 2004 when I got a PB at work. Now if I can convert the wife, life will be good. :)

In the UK shipping is 3 days.

My 2.7 below was ordered on Tuesday but has the priority A option which effectively lets you jump the que a bit + get faster shipping. It is a business purchase. Delivery is EST as Friday.

The local Apple Store does have a number of 2.7s in stock in the UK though.

For anyone curious or bothered, my beast will have the below spec and be used for Video / Audio work.

My rev B dual 2.0 showed up today, tiger in the box and everything. Now if they do announce the new dual core dual processors at MWSF (no way they do it at the WWDC) - and it'll be just my luck now I u/g - I won't HAVE to run out and buy! Good value for the 1699, won't take a big hit if I have to sell to fund my next acquisition. ;-)

Angry...

I'm so angry at the moment I could step off the deep end and go order a Dell.

I too am a victim of the famous "Bait And Switch", also known as "Replaced with New Product" feature with all of the same component numbers and descriptions. My CTO Dual 2.7 was supposed to ship today, day 5 of the 3-5 day estimated ship time. I had all assurances from Apple that everything looked good and it was scheduled to ship today. No one could explain what the "Replaced with New Product" "strategy" was on their status web site, and there were no notes on my order to indicate what had happened.

After waiting on hold for 20 minutes, the person I spoke to more or less assured me that there was absolutely no way that my system was going to ship today, and that Apple could not tell me what the new ETA was or what the holdup was until tomorrow when the "We're Sorry" email is sent.

My speculation is the 400GB drive upgrade, which I'm now regretting. The other CTO options I chose were BT, BT KB+MSE, AE. Stock memory, stock video, no PCI cards.

This was to be my 3rd Mac (PB 15 1.5, iMac 20 1.8 + PM 2x2.7), but I've got a strong case of buyers remorse at the moment.

Anyone else have a similar story? Or anyone get a CTO 2x2.7 with a 250GB drive that arrived?

Sorry dude, there's always going to have to be a wee bit of waiting with CTO stuff, even if they quote over-optimistic ship times. My stock 2.0 was supposed to arrive the day after I ordered it but got held up. Trust me, I was both frustrated and suffered from buyer's remorse (particularly when new iMacs are announced and you can no longer cancel your order).

But in the end, is a delay of a matter of days that big a deal when you're making such a significant investment? Don't let it get to you and enjoy your beast of a machine when it arrives :)

Looks as if people aren't happy with this Power Mac G5 update...At all! I mean c'mon guys, haven't you seen the benchmarks for the new Pentium dual-cores yet? They're either near up to par or under par with the previous 3.8 Ghz P4s, but they're clocked at lower clock speeds. Do you really think that Apple is really that far behind yet? I certainly don't think so...Yet at least. Think about it: the competition is stuck with ONE dual-core processor, as opposed to TWO separate processors. So in theory, they'll be similar in performance. But there will be a time when they will release dual-cores, and they'll release it when the time is RIGHT.

Of course we'd like to see the performance of 2 separate chips into 1 chip. Maybe something special will happen at WWDC that we won't expect! Just wait maybe another 6 months, and I assure you Apple and IBM will come up with a POWERFUL Power Mac update. I can already smell the PowerBook G5s coming...... :D

UPDATE: 2.7 CPUs seem to be the problem

I hear you. All of my Macs were CTO. I guess I was banking on their estimates being on the conservative side, and was hoping the system would be here by now, not potentially delayed for another X amount of time.

Just an update... It looks like PROCESSORS are the problem. I checked the web site, and everything is "Same Day" stock. 1.8 is 2-4 days, 2.0 is 3-5, 2.3 is 3-5, and the 2.7 now says 5-7 days.

The part that really annoys me, though, is the poster a few back that got bumped from 5/4 to 5/13. That's ETA +7 days, or basically he could have ordered the system from scratch today. That tells me that the folks that got the "Replaced With" treatment got bumped to the back of the line, which is, IMHO, terrible customer service. My ship date still says 5/4, and 5.4 has about 70 minutes left in my time zone, so I'm not holding my breath.

<sigh>

Tempted to forego the CTO, drive to an Apple store, and buy a stock system. I really wanted bluetooth on board. The other CTO options I could do myself later...
