Applestore has actually moved up the ship time. Originally, they told me Oct. 28 (a couple of weeks ago), but now the site is saying 7-10 days which puts it at Oct. around the 15th.

good luck

If you're referring to the "estimated ship time" when you place a Dual 2GHz G5 in your shopping cart on the Apple store, don't go by that. It constantly changes (i.e. one week it was 7-10 weeks, then 4-6 weeks, then 5-10 business days, and then back to 4-6 weeks).

The website and the apple store staff are pretty clueless about the ship dates.

It's an amazing machine, but wow is the ordering system bizarre.

Hello, I just bought myself one of these G5 machines.. but after reading this thread Im scared it might take years for me to get it!!! Have the sped up their shipping times or am I still destined to wait a few months to get it?

Ignore the whining.

You can order a G5 from MacConnection, MacZone, or Outpost.com, and they will ship it the same day. Overnight, if you're really in a hurry. You can walk into CompUSA and walk out with any of the G5s except the dual. You can walk into Fry's and walk out with any of the G5s including the dual. Ditto the Apple retail stores.

I don't know what more anyone could ask for.

Of course the people (like me) who ordered G5s before they were in production had to wait a lot longer. Is that surprising?

first off, i ordered mine sept 18th, which is 3 full months after they had been shown at the keynote, and I have to wait over a month to receive mine, which is kind of ridiculous to begin with, but ok i'll wait, but look at the amount of people who ordered much earlier that still don't have it.

Yes you can go anywhere and get a non dual 2ghtz g5 , but this thread has been 90+% dual 2.0ghz i'd say, so that's the complaining or "whining" as you put it, that he's been hearing. Also, the problem, obviously is with cto 2ghz g5's, you can pick up a stock one at many places, and most apple stores have them in stock, but explain to me how putting in a 9800 card, and a couple sticks of ram should push that back a month. so that there is suprising. and in my opinion reason for a little "whining"

I ordered a Dual 2GHz CTO (Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme) on August 28th, and it will be on my doorstep tomorrow.

LOL, well it seems I am destined to wait for a while, No biggie ive got my pc to keep me company :-D Considering this was just an impulse buy I shouldnt worry about it... Is there a reason they are so back ordered? Maybe I can buy aG6 or something and it will get here faster? Is there a better Macintosh I can just change my order to and it will get here faster?

Ask your car dealer how long it takes to order a new car from the factory. Talk to the people who ordered PT Cruisers before they were in production. Ask Boeing how long it takes to build a 747.

Life doesn't always offer instant gratification, as much as might desire it. Not everything comes out of vending machines like soda -- and even soda machines run empty from time to time.

You can walk into Fry's, put one in your shopping cart, and buy it right now. Total transaction time, maybe four minutes. What more do you want?

Maybe Apple can't wish 9800 cards into being and has to wait for its suppliers? No, you're right, that's much too logical. It's much more likely that Apple has plenty of parts on hand and just won't ship them because 1) they're evil, 2) they don't like making money, and 3) their evil is directly specifically at you.

What's that Razor: "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity..."

Not that I'm calling anyone the "s" word...

well, in my opinion, apple has many custom pre-orders. Those people are going to wait for it. They may complain, but when it gets there, it all wont matter anymore to them. So wouldn't it make sense then to have them wait for it, which they will, and put more effort into making stock ones which can be sold much easier and at more places? i'd guess 5 out of every 100 might cancell a pre-order after having to wait a while, so there's 4k+ a person, why not get it out there and make another 3k per computer that's sold stock. It would make sense, I'm not saying it's what they do, but it'd help raise more computers i'd say

also, guess what. I have $5,000 + tied up in the apple store right now, as I paid by check, I dont have that money, it's already been drafted, so until I get my computer I feel I might have a little reason to complain. as far as I know, until your post I hadn't said one thing like "oh apples screwing us and just making us wait" i've merely stated how much it has sucked to have to wait. which it does...obviously. whether it's warranted or not.

also, have you heard about shortages of the 9800 card? a lot of times you see something about that somewhere, I haven't heard anything yet, so maybe that's not it.

I do wonder why people who are in a hurry to get their machines ordered a custom configuration. Common sense should have told that customization would likely slow things down.

Most of the custom options -- increased RAM and disk space, Bluetooth connectivity -- can be added easily. The upgraded graphics card is the only option not currently available from third parties, but the 9800 offers only a small performance increase of interest mostly to gamers. For pro applications, there will soon be pro cards available with greatly improved performance.

Well, that is a concern if you need the money. Of course, if you need the money for something else, you shouldn't have used it to buy a computer. And while you chose to pay by check, Apple does not require that. You could have applied for Apple Credit and not had any payments or interest until 2004 -- long after your computer arrives.

You do know that the AGP 8X Radeon 9800 for Macintosh is currently manufactured for (and only available with) the G5, don't you? The evidence is right there in those reports you have from Apple.

Of course, if you prefer to believe in a conspiracy....

By the way, an Apple employee told me that 4500 dual G5s arrived from China last week. That sounds like quite a "trickle" to me.

:)

I'm still waiting for mine through local Apple Reseller. Order 2 GHZ Dual w/ 9800 and BT added. Paid for in check July 25.
Reseller got their first box revceived on Monday, and it showed up without any pre-notice from Apple. Reseller tells me I have 8 or 9 people in front of me.

Dang it this really does sux.

Also does anyone know a valid email address for someone in Apple management (NOT Apple Store) that I can write to?

It's a CTO, added bluetooth to it and removed the modem (who needs a modem when you have a cell phone with bluetooth?). I ordered it Sep. 13 and it was est. to ship on or before 10/21/03. I should have it by tuesday! ::drool::

hrm, then this gives me hope. only thing that could be a problem is if the 9800 cards are scarce, cause other than that i got most of the same stuff you got, and im sure they have ram and harddrives in stock. now just hope yours comes with panther preinstalled, i couldn't really imagine it would, being before its released in stores, but who knows. atleast it's only $20 for ya

Or if you are a developer like me I'll get Panther in their mailling. My G5 was also only $2416(b4 tax). Thats 20% off. Now thats a discount! Then again, the price for being a devloper is far more than the amount I saved. Ouch.

haha, isn't that always the way? what do you pay like 1000 a year? do you make enough programming to account for that?

Its $500 a year. I'm not shelling out 3gs for the top membership. I get the hardware discount every time I renew(can only be used to buy one item). As for if I make that much programming, let's just say I'm not really the one picking up the developer membership tab. ;)

I know this is pretty much a dead topic, but I just thought I'd announce that I got my shipping notification today a whole 9 days ahead of schedual in the "Apple order status" page. So that makes me really happy :) I just wonder if it will have that new operating system thing on it or if I will have to pay for the 20 dollar s&h upgrade... Considering it will get here on about the 25th :-/ Kinda makes me wish they hadnt shipped it ahead of schedual.. not that 20 dollars is much.. more of the idea of having to upgrade it soon after I get it. I would have perfered a clean install... Do any of you know if an Upgrade is slower then a plain clean install?

i have been asking everyone, but lucky you. but did you get the 9800 pro card? that's definately what's holding me up, and it kinda sucks seeing everyone get theirs early, mine still says the same ship date, and i dont have a good feeling about it, i have a feeling it's going to take longer

Wohoooo first post

Howyiz folks

Took delivery of mine 2 weeks ago, took it out (the G5 that is) for a few hours then put it away again (house renovations) but I've been giving it welly this week and I have to say it's a beast and the 20" cinema screen is a joy to work with, pi$$es all over 1.25 Dual G4 I have in the office plus the whole aesthetics, soooo nice, though was using it last night around 12.30am and I could hear the chirping whirring cricket sound in the box but hey it's a G5 and my first *new* mac at home, I can live with it.

ok how do I do the bold in my sig?
