My G5 is FINALLY shipping, and FedEx is saying it should arrive at my house tomorrow! I can't wait to kiss the apple logo when I open it, and of course use it!!!

Got mine!

Got my DP G5 by walking into the Denver Apple store and brandishing my credit card- they took it - for only a few seconds -and then helped me lug that boat anchor out to the getaway truck.
I suspect that this thing could survive a meteoric reentry from space and still keep running "folding".

hah. I was talking to my fedex guy today, and he was talking about some poor dumb bastard was on his third try to deliver it. he's never there, and wont sign his slip to let him leave it there. today was the final attempt, and the fedex guy was sick of trying, so he was goign to make sure it went back on a plane tonight. haw haw, i hope he wasn't there and lost it.

What an idiot - that guy doesn't deserve a G5 :p

I did send emails to this address and here's the response I got...
"Thank you for your email. Apple regrets the delay in shipping the custom
configured Dual G5s to our online customers and resellers. However, the
employees of the online Apple Store do not have visibility nor any influence
on Apple Authorized Reseller stock levels or anticipated shipping dates.

If you desire compensation for the delay, you may want to consult the
reseller where your order was booked. If you would like to find the Apple
Retail Store nearest you, please visit <http://www.apple.com/retail/>.

Thank you for your interest in Apple products.

Does anyone have another email address for Apple that they know goes to whatever person or department IS in charge of this?

Apple charges 1300 bucks for 2 gigs..and you don't even know where it comes from...I guess that's how they make the money cause they are giving the computers away...

I still stick by my original comment that it sounds like you are quoting matched pair 2x512MB = 1GB prices. However, the prices aren't as bad as I thought. For instance, OWC sells 2x1GB for $700 with lifetime replacement warrantee which isn't too bad a premium. I can't comment on the quality, but a simple web search should yield a lot of information on OtherWorld Computing since they've been in the Mac biz for a while.

Therefore the $1300 from Apple is on the high side, but that is true anytime you go to a vendor, go to Dell's site if you don't believe me. I'd trust Apple's quality more than your regular vendor, however, as a flakey RAM module severely destroys your computing experience (it creates a slow corruption of the operating system that may take months before it materializes in a kernel crash or whatever). In the PC world people would be hard to separate such flakiness from the fragility of Windows updates.

That's from firsthand experience. AppleCare entitled my computer to run on the bench at AppleStore for free. The problem turned out to be some cheap 3rd party RAM I purchased. Nowadays I run memtest in single user mode. It's a port to the tried-and-true memtest86 from the PC world.

(BTW, if you want to be thorough you should mix memory modules and run memtest again because it can't test lowram or high ram effectively.)

Take care,

terry

Just a quick little update, I got tracking numbers for both my G5 and 20" Apple Cinema Display - both should be arriving Tuesday afternoon :D

You mean you pay $500? Is this the thing that also gets you big discounts on the computers?

reply

yah, relativly large discounts. Plus you get almost any software apple makes for the price as long as yuor willing to use a beta forever.

Plus you get all the new OSX releases while your a member. And OSX server for "development"

So, the "real" panther release gets mailed to you for free !!

You probably can't at this point. Panther is now golden. The release version will be available in a few weeks.

Kinda spensive for the gig stick, ainit?

Not really, considering they're the new kids on the block. If you're questioning why someone would buy a 1GB stick over two 512MB sticks, it's because they want to max out their RAM at either 4GB or 8GB (1.6GHz model for former and 1.8/Dual 2GHz for latter).

Yeah! That's what I wanna do!

I also just installed 10.2.8 (G5) and it's working well.

exactly, that's why I would be willing to go the 700 for the 2x1gb, maybe not maxing it out now, but in a little while if i want to, i'd rather not have to just throw out the 2x512mb to fit the 1 gb ones. in the long run, if that's the plan, the 700 isn't too terrible. especially against apples price.

Hello, I just bought myself one of these G5 machines.. it looked nifty :-D I have been a PC user for about 6 years and before that, in the Mac LC era, I was a Mac user... Well, I found a bunch of mac games I had from that time that I wanted to play, I couldnt get them to work on an emulator.. so I caved in and bought one... but after reading this thread Im scared it might take years for me to get it!!! Have the sped up their shipping times or am I still destined to wait a few months to get it?

Applestore has actually moved up the ship time. Originally, they told me Oct. 28 (a couple of weeks ago), but now the site is saying 7-10 days which puts it at Oct. around the 15th.

good luck

still est. ship date of 10-24-2003  I check the est. ship date multiple times a day. that really pisses me off. I just went and reconfigured it the same exact way as I had ordered it, and you're right, it does say 7-10 business days which would put it at October 14-17, grr, i'm calling on monday to find out WHY?!?! and see if they can give me a better idea on when I can expect it. but yay, it's looking like i might get it earlier.
i guess i should make the desk i'm keeping it on soon huh? :D Thank you, that actually kind of made my day to see some chance i might get it earlier. I was willing to wait till the 24th if I got panther pre-installed, but now that it might be even later, i want it sooner.
