I am surprised at some people on here who don't "get" the 3.0 Ghz promise and why it is so important. The giga-hertz reality is that macs have been losing to PC systems. The G5 made significant ground in that area but still leave "the world's fastest computer" issue up for debate. Closing to 3 Ghz not only brings macs as fast or faster than the best PC's, but also (and more importantly) closes the mind share gap of any precieved difference in consumers minds - read those who are thinking of switching. This is key to macs gaining more market share. Then you tack on the CEO PROMISING to be at that mark in a year only adds to the importance. Oh yeah, then you ad on there have been NO real updates (speed wise, sorry the dual 1.8 was to move machines, no real improvement in the chip or speed) and you get a computer line that is almost a year old - a lifetime in tech years. These all combine to make the 3 gig mark very important. If we had seen some speed bumps along the way, it wouldn't be as big - but we haven't so it is.

As to those who say something less than 3 tomorrow and then announce 3 gigs a few months later - what are you smoking, cause I want some! This would just be a bad business move. Other's have covered why so I won't bother. I would like to see Apple move to just quitely rolling out speed bumps much like all the PC people do. A few years ago, you spend $1500 on a PC and in three months you would get a lot more for your same $1500. Apple hasn't worked that way, but I think Steve is trying to move down that road and save the big announcements for a new form factor/look or signigicant chip upgrade. Those tend to be big news and move product, not speed bumps. This would help move product continuely because they wouldn't get the typical slow down around conferences or suspected announcements. Matter of fact, it would make guessing those announcements difficult.

All that being said, I do not think we will see new Powermacs tomorrow. The promo Apple is running doesn't expire untill later and Apple's past has shown those promo's tend to coincide with new product being announced. I could see 3 gigs announced at WWDC (not news since he said it would happen, thus not much time spent on the topic) while the big news being a G5 imac. That would be cool.

I doubt it. These won't be announced before WWDC, unless PowerBook G5s and iMac G5s are the new things at WWDC and the PMs didn't reach 3 GHz.

Yes - and I wish people on this forum would get this. Steve want to make this a DEVELOPER's conference.

New PMs tomorrow, maybe new Displays at WWDC. :D

It doesn't make much sense to update the Powermac (even if its just a minor update) and then 3 weeks later update the displays.

Otherwise I agree. The Powermac and displays tommorrow 2.0, 2.4, 2.6GHz, all dual. Then the iMac G5 at WWDC will be 1.6GHz 15", 1.8GHz 17", and 1.8GHz 20".
But I also think that the Powermac will start receiving more frequent updates, about every 3-6 months. The PowerBook G5 will need to be introduced by january to keep those customers happy.

True, but the same could have been said a year ago when the all-new G5 PowerMac design was released - why weren't new, matching displays released along with them? Displays will be released when they're ready to be released, but I agree that it would be beneficial to release them together.

Assuming a new line-up topping out at 2.6 GHz, then I could definitely see then next revision being soon thereafter, since it will no doubt be the 3 GHz revision, however as for more frequent updates in general, we'll have to see. Of course, after waiting an entire year for updates like this past year, any updates will be more frequent by default! ;)

Possibly in January, but I could see it a couple months later too, like February or March, perhaps even for MWSF '05. Regardless, I've said it before and I'll say it again, no G5 PowerBooks until 2005...

I will be very disappointed if the Rev. B isn't 3 GHz. Can still hope till the actual release. :(

People come on,Steve was just giving us a hint of what was to come, its not like he is home baking these things up in his easy bake oven.. so maybe they do hit 3 ghz or maybe they dont for another few months the new powermacs will have enough power to do whatever you want. Im just glad as heck Powermacs arent dual G4s running at 1.5 now that would make me sick!

I know we've disagreed on many things before DHM, but I do agree with you on this one - any update is better than nothing, especially since it's been an entire year with nothing! Although a 3GHz release would truly show that IBM means business, a 2.6 GHz release is definitely more than adequate and is nothing to sneer at.

Geez, DHM, you even made me chuckle with your "easy bake oven" comment - what's going on here, usually we're arguing with each other... ;)

You must be pretty old to remember those or are they still making those things? My sister had one but then she sold it to the G4 lab at motorola. :D

I have no idea if they're still making them or not - just one of those things I remember being around from my younger days... I think my cousin had one, but I can't even remember now... I was probably too busy playing on my brother's Apple //e

*Sure* "your sister". You can admit to using an easy bake oven- it's ok. :D ;)

Im with you folks! Any update to the G5's is a good thing. I've been waiting since DECEMBER! First it was MWSF, then feb, then March... this better be it or I'm hooking up my Turbo Gaphix16 and never looking back!

Dual 2.0

Seeing how the Dual 2.0 G5 is already a knockout system, I'd probably forego a Rev.B G5 at lowend of 2.2, IF there are any refurbished or "leftover" Dual 2.0's priced very competitively. I mean...c'mon...where does it end?!

DUH!!

jeez, have you guys been living in a cave?? if he doesn't reach 3GHz i will go crazy....i mean, think about it, ive seen phones with 2.4 GHz written on the box!!!!! :D :D :D

Steve Jobs is a man of many talents, however I don't know if he would be able to oscillate that fast - unless he was really nervous on stage and really shaking a lot - I don't think that it would be healthy to have Jobs running at 3 GHz.... :p ;)

This is too funny. This site has reported rumors of new powermacs almost twice monthly for the last six months. So I figure that the month that new powermacs actually do come out would have maybe one, at most two incorrect rumors. They just have to keep doing the usual and they are guaranteed of being right at least once, even if only by accident. And yet they somehow seem to have ramped up the incorrect predictions to almost one a day now.

I also agree that any update is better then no update at all. We definitely need the Rev. B, so any current problems will be fixed and have newer technology. That along with 10.4 will make for an awesome machine. :)

iWalk

Wow, I just love the new G5s! almost as much as my iWalk and video iPod.

Was the iWalk circa 2002 the PDA theat Jobs' nixed at the last minute?

BTW, a handheld video device seems like a gimmic at this point. I would not waste money for one.

Well .... looks like this is what it is ... a rumor. June 28 is not that far away. The truth will be told soon, and I heard from an iCard from steve, that "it will be worth it"

I doubt this is anything significant, but the Order Status portion of the Apple Store is closed for update. Thought I'd post it just in case it turns out to be anything.

That usually means a minor update (i.e. eMac bump).

Duff-Man says...it's just past "closing time" on the west coast...probably just updating the days shipments and that kind of stuff....oh yeah!....nothing unusual
