I would use the SD Card slot a lot more if there was an option in iPhoto that would cause iPhoto to recognize the SD Card in the same way as it recognizes a camera when you connect it via USB.

That's an excellent point; I didn't think of that. I wonder why Apple hasn't addressed that issue? You would think that's a no-brainer!

the moment I insert the SD card from my camera, iPhoto opens up and displays all my photos. Actually just tried it and yep, opened right away.
iphoto also does this when i connect my iphone (which can be an annoyance sometimes) if it has photos.

Actually, this is the inverse of the very reason I bought an external reader:

We were on vacation and my cousin placed some family photos on my P&S's SD card to take home. I wanted to be able to pull those images off the card with iPhoto through the camera, but since it wasn't recognized by the camera that wouldn't work and I don't know of a way to read the SD card through my camera. SO...$10 later I have an SD card reader that attachs via USB. I thought about just going to the local drugstore or WalMart and making a CD from the images at one of the self-serve machines. But now I have a reader should I ever need one in the future....not that I expect too, but it was only 10 bucks.

I did not know that! I don't have an SD card I use for photos. Does the card display in iPhoto?

I agree, I find iPhoto opening when I sync my iPhone annoying

yeah, I took a quick screenie right after i plugged in the card, it shows up on the left as EOS Digital and opens the photos on the card.

WTH?!

I just tried it again, and now iPhoto DOES treat the SD Card as it would a camera. Even if iPhoto is quit, when I insert the SD Card, it launches.

That's very, very strange.

I must have inserted the SD Card into my MBP 6-10 times in the past 6 weeks (since I bought my MBP), and iPhoto never recognized the card. It would just mount on my desktop as a drive. Now it does both.

So weird. I wonder why it didn't work before and now it does?

I even looked to see if there was a preference option in iPhoto, but couldn't find anything.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that I completely erased the SD Card on the camera last week and took some photos. I haven't attempted to insert the SD Card since the erase.

I'm glad it works the way it should now.....

I think the SD card needs to be used in a camera before iPhoto will recognise it as such. Until a camera has taken ownership, it's just a piece of generic memory as far as your Mac is concerned.

Actually, this thread got me thinking. I bought the original CoreDuo MBP when it was released nearly 4 years ago and I now have the 2009 17" Unibody MBP. Both of them have expresscard slots but I have never used either of them.

Recently, I traded my Canon G9 for a Lumix LX3. Both cameras use SD cards but, where the Canon has a standard USB port, the Lumix has some pissy little generic thing, requiring me to carry a specialised lead or adapter. I've been glaring jealously at the built-in SD card slots in my colleagues' and friends' more recent MBPs. This thread prompted me to order an SD card reader that can live in the expresscard slot permanently.

Problem solved. Thanks, guys!

Another use of Expresscard that no one has mentioned here is for connecting to professional video interfaces.

Example: suppose I wanted to capture an HD-SDI signal from a video camera into the computer. With Expresscard, I can get an Aja IO Express or Matrox MXO2 LE for under $850. But without Expresscard, I have to get something that uses FW800, such as the Aja ioHD, which is $3500.

$850 vs $3500. I used to be able to have a choice here!

I've been using the SD Card I'm referring to with the same camera (Canon Powershot SD1000) for the past year or so. I've successfully transferred many photos off of it to iPhoto via the USB cable that came with my camera.

The only thing that has changed is, that since my last transfer via USB cable, I fully erased the SD Card using the camera. I then took some photos. Today, I inserted the SD into the slot, and iPhoto recognized it.

I'm thinking that erasing the card somehow made it so that iPhoto now recognizes it.

That's really odd, but sometimes refreshing is all it takes. Have you confirmed this process by reformatting the card again?

sd card slot

It was one of the reasons why I got a new MBpro 13". I use my digital camera all the time, I use the SD slot probably 10-20 times a day. Better than fumbling with the cables and 3rd party bundled b.s. software camera companies use now. Love it

What I really like too is that with my bb tour I can take pics, and then bluetooth them to my mac without doing squat!!!!!

I've always wondered about SD cards with that technology; how fast is the transfer rate? How large is your typical image file?

i use my expresscard slot all the time. i use a 21-1 card reader, so it reads all my formats. i HATE being limited to sd only. some of us actually have to use more than just sd.

I've used my Sd slot once since I got my laptop. Compared to the 0 times I would have used an expresscard slot. Both are really useless to me anyway seeing as how 1) I already have a usb card reader and 2) my camera is CF. I really could have used an extra USB port though.

I also kind of like the idea of booting from an SD card, but then again not really. The card sticks out and I'd have to buy a 32 or 64gb one.

All in all I'm pretty indifferent to the topic.

I love it, I think it was a great addition and while I don't use it daily I use it enough to justify wanting it!

Good card readers are much faster than even very expensive cameras.

But USB 2.0 is not fast enough for SDXC. Even FW800 is somewhat slower. No such problem with ExpressCard (PCI Express mode).

Aha! The value of express comes to light. Seriously, I wish Apple would bring it back; especially for the 13" MBP!

Maybe it will come back as ExpressCard 2.0, which is twice as fast, and even a little bit more than USB 3.0

I wouldn't be surprised is Apple just gave you USB 3.0 and an SDXC slot.
