How about preordering as soon as orders open, then going to the store on the 10th to look at the watch, then if you find you want something other than what you ordered, put in another order, and cancel the first one?

This is what I plan to do.

You can cancel the first order as long as it hasn't been "preparing for shipment"

Looks like in store pick-up will be available if I'm reading this press release correctly: https://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/03/09Apple-Watch-Available-in-Nine-Countries-on-April-24.html

I'm not as sure as the others.... I've ordered other items from apple (other than the iphone) that had preorders with specific release dates.... the people go them in the stores... and we, who preordered, impatiently waited for our products....

i know it happened with the original ipad mini LTE version..... they were in stores earlier than those of us who preordered had them delivered....

The original iPod touch offered pre-order and it was not delivered on launch day. You could go and get one in a store before they arrived via FedEx. That got me $50.00 off my touch. I had actually ordered over the phone and the ordering went live as I was speaking to the agent - the online store wasn't even open yet. I was angry!

What evidence do you have for stating this?

In the past, all pre-orders have arrived on launch day. Sure, it's possible (though not likely) that Apple might do it differently this time, but if so, they haven't said.

We won't know until April 10th for sure.

Wasn't there one iPhone where ups or fedex slipped up and many got delivered a day before?

yeah a couple years ago (4s maybe) and I think they got chastised badly for it from :apple:.

I think this was the iPhone 4? I got it a day before the release date.

This was the iPhone 4. I received mine a day early and it absolutely was not a FedEx/UPS error. We were notified that we'd be receiving them a day early by Apple. They had such a hard time with activations on the previous release, then intentionally sent some out a day early to ease the activation rush.

I'm ordering online regardless of delivery date.

After the iPhone 6 launch, I don't have the heart to go to another product launch, at least not at my local store.

Every other person in the queue was a scalper.

Ruins the mood.

Bastards.

Funny. A lot 6/6 plus were shipped before the release date. I was one of the people following along in a thread on here where people posted updates on their phones' location and its arrival on launch day

I stand corrected. You're right.

Maybe I was thinking about the 5s release where the shipped on the release date.

This will be the first time ever that I will pre-order something from Apple, so I hope it arrives on that date ;)

You have to be up and ready to go whenever the online store comes back up where you live (usually shortly after midnight U.S. Pacific time). That first window of availability can go very quickly.

I don't think that's ever happened with iOS devices. There may have been ones where there were no preorders, but I'm sure if there were ever any device where all preorders didn't ship until the release date, so that everybody who preordered got theirs after the walk-in people bought theirs, there would be such a hue and cry we would all remember it very very well.

Just every other person? In NYC, the entire line seemed to consist of scalpers with a few end user buyers sprinkled here and there.

It was quite an experience -- it's debatable if it was a good experience, but it was quite a sight!

(Of course, it helped that we managed to score our iPhone 6/6+ at a nearby Verizon store, and didn't have to brave the horrendously long line with all the scalpers. :p)

As with the iPad 2, iPad Air, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and iPhone 6 Plus, I'll be pre-ordering online as soon as they go on sale, sit back, relax, and get it delivered to my door the morning of release.

If it's a cold day, I like to turn the thermostat up an extra degree, make a warm beverage, and think of all the people sitting in line at a store somewhere.

No, the iPhone 5S online orders were delayed (in the UK at least). Pre-ordering (such that it was) started at 00:00 on launch day (20th Sept), with even the first orders shipping in "7-10 business days". I eventually got my "pre-order" delivered on 1st October, a good 10 days after people got them in store...

Yes, it has. The original iPod touches had pre-orders and very few got them delivered on release day. I was waiting for them to send mine and could have walked into a store and purchased one. It was very frustrating!

Ok, that sucks. But that was because the first batch of preorders were already sold out by the time the preorders came online in the UK, right? You were told at the time you placed your order that delivery would be after launch day?

Really? I hadn't joined MacRumors back then, so I must have missed that one! I got really interested in Apple products only after someone gave me the original iPod touch.

No, even the very first orders were quoted 7-10 days (see the posts on this page)

Scalping shouldn't be an issue with the Apple Watch since it is launching in China on the same day.

Yep. There were LOTS of posters swearing they would NEVER PREORDER AGAIN! I'm sure that, like me, many have and there haven't been any huge problems since. If a pre-order is offered, they usually show up on launch day.

OH! I forgot about the white iPhone 4 debacle! It never showed up for preorder and wasn't available for several months. But, again, it wasn't available for preorder, so...

I think I will do the same I have done with the iPhone 6 last year. Pre Ordered online with a pick up in store on release day.

Should have seen all the faces when I walked by them for my 9am slot :D

btw: This was in Glasgow, so UK should offer the same with the Apple Watch.

How did that work exactly? Did you still order (and pay?) on the Apple Store product page, and if so was there an option to pick up in store? Or did you book an appointment via that shop's page on the Apple site?
