It gives us better audio quality, so fine with me. My problem is more that they are sticking to Lightning, and not going for USB-C.. USB-C headphones would be WAY more universal.

Don't worry, they will change Lightning for USB-C with the iPhone 8 or 9. Then you'll need a $ 29,90 adaptor for your $ 299,- Lightning Beats Headphones and some mindless consumers will repeat "it's the future" without thinking twice.

I don't really understand why the *possible* lack of a headphone jack is such a big uproar?!!! I can't remember the last time I plugged any headphones into the jack?!!!! Wireless headphones are so much better, easier and definitely the way to go :)

Wireless better? in what sense, the quality is either inferior or =
Easier? in what sense.. i mean recharging every 4-5 hours compared to plug and play, loosing connection (pairing here, pairing there....)vs...again plug and play

And just because you did not use the jack means the rest of the world did not?

While I agree that it is the "future" and "inevitable" trying to convince yourself that it is easier and better to have a wireless heaphones today means you are out of Kool Air because you drank too much of it!

We think or we believe. That is how the sentence will start.

Throw in some "magic" and you have the whole thing :p

ooooohhh....sarcasm. That's me slapped down then.
So you're happy to splash out $1000 on two year old tech ?
You mean two year old tech, which is faster then day 0 product from the competition, works more reliability, has better support, longer lifecycle, takes better pictures?

That two year old tech? Yes.

People call it 2 year old tech because of the same design....

Take an iPhone 7 and put it into a newer design and you'd hear people telling you it is the best update ever made to an iPhone.

I can also predict Tim would say "Our best iPhone™" and people would agree!!

I'm not calling it 2 year old tech, and lots of other "people" aren't either. "People" ignorantly call the SE 3 year old tech because of the form factor?

As for Tim calling it their best iphone, yes it will be. It certainly isn't going to be slower, less reliable, less features etc, than the predecessors.

You might have missed the fact that i was "endorsing" your side and not against.....

Yes many people consider the "outside" instead of the "inside" (again not saying it is the right thing ...but they do)

I actually wasn't debating that, just continuing the conversation. But thanks for the clarification.:)

Nobody needs a headphone jack anymore. It's time for everyone to move with the times and adopt wireless options.

I hate blanket statements like this. I am an audio guy. I use Apple products for portability and ease of use in audio applications. Sorry, but in order to do that right for you general consumers, we still use wires to make that happen, including wires to and from my Apple devices to my mixers in order to get the cleanest transfer of sound possible with no drop off from wonky Bluetooth. Call me in the the minority of users, but don't say nobody needs a jack anymore. I'll need to seriously look at things when I can no longer get the audio adapter with the pin adapter to work any longer.

Actually, it is not, otherwise I wouldn't have asked. You were asked this before in this thread, and your only answer was 'It will be more expensive to buy headphones', so no.

Then you aren't reading what I wrote.

Again, an analogue jack like the 3.5mm does not compromise quality in any way. It's the same jack used on headphones costing thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. Switching to lightning can only move the digital to analogue conversion in the chain, which yes, means that the overall quality of most headphones, built to a specific cost, has to go down. You can't add a bunch of new hardware without skimping somewhere else for the same cost. Headphones with $50 invested entirely in the driver material and design are going to sound a heck of a lot better than $50 headphones that have to spread that cost across basic headphone design, plus licensing fees, plus a DAC and amp.

Maybe we will see "Lightning 2.0" with some technology upgrade for the audio part and Apple will present that like the futur of music on Smartphone.... or just Bluetooth 5 support with 300 bulks beats headset ... 2 days left :)

To each their own....I like wireless. I don't find wireless to be such a huge pain as you describe. If someone doesn't like the lack of the headphone jack than I suppose they could go get a different phone or use an older iPhone?! I've moved to Android in the past when I got sick of Apple. We have many options ;)

I use the 3.5mm jack on my phone in my car all the time. This is despite the car having bluetooth. Bluetooth just doesnt sound as good as a good wired connection. This is fact, not opinion. Avarage Joe may not hear the difference or care about sound quality. I do. Its ok. Apple will be providing an adapter in the box, right? ;)

Wrong. Apple cater to Apple. Whatever will pull in the biggest profit, regardless of what customers think. If they are so intent on wireless technology, why not wireless charging ? The technology has around for long enough for it to be adopted, along with decent screen technology, but these additions must have an adverse effect on profits, otherwise they would have been adopted by now. Apple only cares about Apple. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

There is truth to that, they are a business. I wouldn't expect them to make a decision that wouldn't make a positive impact on their bottom line. I am not one of their engineers so I couldn't say about the wireless charging, but I am sure there are tradeoffs with every new technology implemented. Maybe they are looking to create something better? The current form of wireless charging keeps you connected to the wall still.

the issue is, bluetooth isnt reliable...beats headphones and other brands either disconnect or have static at random times, even if the parent devices are right next to them.

I see it much like the change from the 30-pin to the Lightning port.

It WILL be inconvenient. Sometimes I will be annoyed. But I understand and can accept it, and a year from now it will be no big deal at all. And I do understand that it brings advantages to the design, advantages that will matter to me.

So I'm just going to roll with it. The iPhone has always served my needs extremely well and I'm not switching gears now.

I am guessing that Apple might take a page from the MacBook keynote, and try to sell their vision of a wireless future, and how the absence of the headphone jack is proof of their conviction.

This assumes the next iPhone comes with wireless charging in some form. Apple can then talk about how you don't need those ports because everything you need to do with your phone, you can do it wirelessly (wireless charging, wireless headphones, AirPlay, iCloud backups etc).
While the removal of the headphone jack did really upset me, if wireless charging turned out to be why, then I'd totally forgive them! (Not only that, I'd rush out and buy one in a heartbeat, even though I've still got 3 perfectly good iPhones!) lol. -I'm serious!!

Don't really care much for waterproofing, so neither that nor the second speaker is anywhere near a worthy enough enough trade-off for losing something I still find so incredibly useful. But I've always secretly wished for wireless charging though BIG TIME, so I'm gonna be watching the keynote wishing it's your prediction that comes true!! If that happens, I really would be a happy bunny!!

Those three little dots at the back of the device, that nobody's really sure what they're for. could they? would they? (I'm probably dreaming, but how awesome would that be!!)

They will run a video on par with the 1984 commercial that depicts the prophecies that will usher in the end of the world and end it by saying the removal of the headphone jack isn’t mentioned in those prophecies.

Your post opened my eyes and im sure fellow MR members. Thank you. Now my purchase of my new iPhone 7 will be in the right frame of mind as I fork over my $1000 on the 256gb plus.
Off topic but you have been a 4.7" user correct? Are you considering moving to the plus this time around? Just curious because I have used the 4.7" the last two years but am now considering the 256gb (if offered) plus. Still a little nervous about the size despite having rather large hands.

I have the 6s and am considering the plus. I have to try them out in the store and see how I feel about the size.

What I find interesting is that Motorola/Lenovo released the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid without the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Yet the Moto Z Play Droid which is due to be released in the next month or so does have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

They'll say it's old technology, inconvenient and get in the way, plus Bluetooth technology has come a long way. Plus Bluetooth headphone sales I think in the past month or so has surpassed those of wired headphones.

That's the crux of the whole thing. Unless damaged, you can use good wired headphones for a long, long time, so replacing them doesn't happen often. With bluetooth headphones, the various companies can string us along into buying new versions every couple of years, as battery life, bluetooth sound quality and other technical aspects improve.
