swiftaw edged out cambookpro and Doctor Q by picking 6 winners in these 9 categories, while cambookpro and Doctor Q each picked 5:

It was a suspenseful finish for our contest because Meryl Streep's win over Viola Davis for Best Actress put cambookpro into a 2nd place tie only minutes before the telecast ended. Without that win, which many people considered an upset, he would have finished in 3rd place with 17, to Doctor Q's 19 and swiftaw's 20.

It's fortunate for the contest judges too, because as things turned out NEENAHBOY's missed vote didn't affect his contest placement. But if Viola Davis had won then it would have throw the decision to the judges to decide whether or not to give him a Best Foreign Language point, which would put him into a tie with cambookpro.

Interestingly, all three of our top finishers picked incorrectly for Best Film Editing (which Jaffa Cake, renewed, and ejb190 got correct) and Best Visual Effects (which only dejo got correct out of 15 MacRumors contestants).

This was quite honestly one of the worst years for film I can remember. I usually know when the Oscars are happening and get excited for them. Not this year. The films nominated were mediocre for the most part, and when something like Bridesmaids gets nominated, you know it's been a bad year. Not that Bridesmaids was a bad film, but it is far from the best Apatow and Co. have to offer. I was surprised it got an Oscar nod in the first place. If that got a nod, why not the Hangover? Seriously, very bad year. The only thing I thought was Oscar worthy at all was Hugo, and even that had some pretty serious flaws.

Bad year for film. The summer stuff was fun this year, but the supposed "Oscar worthy" stuff was just not- at all.

EDIT- I have not seen The Help yet. I've heard that's awesome.

You serious? have you not seen 'The Artist'? it blows Hugo out of the water and rightfully won 'Best Picture' and 'Jean Dujardin' also rightfully won 'Best Actor' :D

The Artist is it? Sure- damn good film, but what about the rest of the year in film? I'm sorry- it was a terrible year for film, period.

Where are our people like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Gaspar Noe, etc? My god, it's pathetic. Richard Kelly should be one of the people taking the reigns (crazy and young, but with vision and brilliant original ideas), but hey- that doesn't sell, does it? The best we have right now is Chris Nolan, and thank god he's there.

Now we nominate things like Bridesmaids. Seriously? Are you ****ing kidding me?

I think it was a pretty lousy year for the Best Song category. But a good year for visual effects.

Seriously- look how pathetic this thread is. No one cares, because there is nothing to care about.

Gay men came out to play floor hockey tonight in droves, and did not care about the Oscars. Last year, we cancelled the games. This year, no one even cared what was nominated, myself included. There was not one Oscar party mentioned. Not one of my friends even mentioned or cared about the Oscars. There were not even any parties planned.
.
There is a shift happening here. Film has to offer more than it did last year. It was a terrible, pathetic year. If gay men don't care about the Oscars, then straight people won't either.

I have to tell you, I thought the boys would stay home and have Oscar parties. They didn't. They came out to play floor hockey instead. The film industry is ****ing itself when we don't even care.

You are correct The Artist was like a breath of fresh air, it was a fantastic film, and deserved to win.

So- a film that recycled black and white, had nothing new to say is our Oscar winner? OK.

I think we can do better. If we can't, I'm done.

It was a nice period piece. Do something new.

"A breath of fresh air" is not how I would describe it"

Listening to a lot of the same back-rubbing every year takes it toll. I think many people are simply turned off by actors when they speak - total snooze-fest. On the movie front, haven't even been to the cinema one time in the whole of 2011, says it all really.

Last great films I saw (and can actually remember of the top of my head) were There Will be Blood and the Batman flicks.

The problem with the Academy is that they nominiate 10 (ok 9 this year) films when they can't even find 5 worth of winning.

No one cares about gay men playing hockey either yet we don't draw comparisons to whatever else we were doing to this hockey game.

Just leave the thread to those that do care.

Angelina Jolie looked like she weighed about 90 pounds. She should eat something. I did laugh when she was made fun of with her little leg stance, though.

Yeah she's been goin' down a bad road for years now. She was a curvy and beautiful woman before.. shame.

What's the craic with Tom Cruise anyway.. is he ever going to age? I reckon he sleeps in some cryo-chamber..

PS. WTB cryo-chamber

So, swiftaw, would you care to tell us how you did so well predicting this year's Oscars? Did you see a lot of these movies?

I thought it was hilarious, there you have this immensely rich and attractive woman going to africa to adopt kids, give humanitarian help and save them from a life of starvation, and then goes and starves herself into a sick bigheaded stick. Comedy gold.

I actually didn't see the irony until now. It's sad, really.

Gay men came out to play floor hockey tonight in droves

Perhaps this year's Oscar picks didn't appeal to gay floor hockey players. :)

We had over 20 people at our Oscars party. And the number of people that participated in this pool shows there is some interest. Maybe just not in your circle.

But I have to admit that there wasn't anything this year that I was really hoping would win and would be really disappointed if it didn't, other than Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn. :(
