So I got in and completed my order at 3:07:01am EST through the ATT.com website. I was queued up right at 3am, waited a few minutes, then hit refresh on my browser and the preorder page popped up.
The Apple website and the apps I had opened on an iPhone and iPad never became "Live" for me until at least 20 minutes after 3.
The Apple Apps for the 6 & 6s series were the best ways to get your preorder done fast, but last year with the 7Plus, ATT actually opened up a few minutes before 3am and I ended up ordering through them. Again, the Apple sites took at least 5-10 minutes to become live. I think most people started to gravitate towards the Apple Store App when word got around that it was the fastest portal. Seems that may have changed with the last two phones.
As for how many people will receive launch day phones from Apple shipping versus the Carrier's shipping, that remains to be seen.

The website and app didn’t come up until about 5 minutes after 2:00CST. The website came up first. Everything was going smoothly until it needed to confirm account with Sprint. Apple couldn’t connect with Sprints servers- finally at 3:51CST- I was able to get an order processed. Ship time is 5-6 weeks (Dec 11-18)- which is the same as if I’d place an order right now- so I should’ve just waited to order today- and slept through the night last night.
I've heard a lot about Sprint having issues.
The 5-6 weeks, hopefully, is just a safe time that is coming up. From what Rumors we have gathered, the early production issues are being taken care of which may result in more phones per day being produced than currently is happening.
Ya, 5-6 weeks, if I can recall, is the LONGEST I've ever seen for an iPhone shipping estimate.
This is with a tiny bit of pressure relieved by the iPhone 8 series. Imagine if anyone wanting an upgrade only had the option for the iPhone X if the 8 series didn't exist?
