I own both the iPhone SE and the iPod touch (6th gen) and without a doubt the iPhone SE's battery is much better.

While not noticeable for a mundane task like music playback, it is more noticeable for processor intensive tasks.

I've used both as VR devices in a Google Cardboard compatible viewer and the VR app sucks down the iPod touch's battery like crazy (plus the iPod touch gets really hot).

If one wants to use WiFi, then it's a smarter move to get the iPhone SE to use as an iPod touch than to buy the IPT 6G!

The reason?! The battery drains quickly using WiFi on the IPT 6. You can sit there and watch it go down rapidly! I just checked my battery log and discovered cases where the battery percentage went down 14 points in only 2 minutes on WiFi! Generally, it does better than that, but a couple of percentage points in only a few minutes is typical.

Overall, you end up getting only a couple of hours of use out of the iPod Touch while on WiFi. Even with just turning WiFi ON to fetch the morning news from several apps and then turning WiFi OFF, and otherwise using it for ebooks and podcasts (no games or video), my IPod Touch 6 typically gets only about 6-8 hours of life. That's been true from the beginning. (Skip WiFi and turn on Airplane Mode, keep brightness low, and avoid certain gaming apps, and one can get 10-11 hours.)

The device also shuts down suddenly at around 12-13%, a commonly reported issue, which is quite a nuisance! It also means that estimating battery life from, say, the first 15-20% or 60-70% of usage, will be inflated as it will assume another 13% that won't happen. One really has to run the IPT until it shuts off to fully gauge its battery life.

As a clear indication there is a problem with the IPT on WiFi, Apple unusually does NOT give any battery life estimates for web browsing on its product page! It's the only i-device for which that's the case! The omission is striking and telling. (It does give video and audio playback battery life, though., which are fine.)

Most all reviews and user reports indicate that, in contrast to the IPT 6, the battery life on the iPhone SE is phenomenal, including while running on WiFi.

With prices for the 32GB iPhome SE starting at around only $140-150 these days, it's the much better deal. Plus, if you'd like, you can use it as a prepaid phone for only $9/month!

I agree 100%. When I first got the 6 when it came out, I swapped out 3 different models, thinking the first 2 were just duds. However, the problems were consistent with all three models: 4-7 hours battery at very low brightness with Wi-Fi only turned on when I need it, dies at 12%, standby time is horrible, etc. I also noticed that when turning on the battery percentage using iBackUpBot, the thing drops by percentage increments of anything but 1. It's so funny to open an intensive app and see it go from 60 to 40 percent .

Last month I bought a prepaid SE from AT&T as my next phone and put in on my postpaid plan. It works flawlessly, and with a battery only about 1/2 larger than the 6, it makes me wonder if there was something more wrong with the product.

Sorry to bump this, I was offered a mint condition used SE for 80 bucks.

I've been looking on eBay for a 6th gen iPod touch for a week but it's gone well out of my price range each time I try to find one in good condition. I had a 5th gen touch that died last year and I've been using my phone (7 plus) but I wanna go back to splitting it up since I play music a lot.

I assume it's probably better idea to get the mint condition SE for 80 bucks and just use it as an iPod only?

Also, I assume there's only been one generation of the SE? I don't know much about the SE so I looked up the specs and it's definitely better than the 6th gen touch (camera and battery).

Ended up getting the mint SE for 80 bucks. Great condition. Had a headache trying to activate it. Now I have all 18 gigs of my music on it. 80 bucks for a 32 gig space gray in pristine condition (only used 2 months). Couldn't beat it. And to think, I was so concerned about spending over 110 for a used 6th gen iPod Touch.

I think you made a great purchase. Three only advantage the iPod touch 6 would have in your use case is the thinner size. The SE had more RAM, better and faster processor, better screen, better battery, touch ID, better camera (front and rear), and a lot more.

Plus, the battery is semi replaceable. The iPod battery is soldered in and not really replaceable. Plus the screen is glued on, so it's difficult to fix.

Dont' care for the thinner size since I have it in a bulky protective case anyways.

I've only ever used iPhones as iPod touches – I'm on my third now. in my experience you have to have a SIM inserted at all times (a used SIM from the appropriate carrier from someone else's contract works), but that's the only awful hoop. I started making sure I was using (ironically-named) SIM-free iPhones, but originally I made sure everything was single-carrier.
[doublepost=1520787661][/doublepost]My question is this, after all the data required to be an iphone how much of that 32gb is avavilable for use as an ipod?

Going back to the SIM card thing, I've just returned from the US where I picked up my Verizon iPhone SE (which worked perfectly while we were on vacation). I took out the Verizon SIM and put a SIM in from my carrier here in the UK only to be taken to an activation screen. It said the SIM wasn't valid which I was rather annoyed about. I'd spoken to Verizon prior to purchase on the online chat on their website and was told that the phone was unlocked. So I contacted them again via online chat and I explained why I'd bought the iPhone and he said 'so what you're saying to me is you want your phone unlocking?' I replied yes, and he said 'give me a minute'. After a minute or two he said it was done. When I got home, I put my SIM card back in and it activated.

So now I'm using it as an iPod Touch as its 32GB and will be able to use any carrier, if I want, plus Verizon when I return to the US next year.

Very happy with my purchase. Its fast and responsive.

Walmart has 32GB refurbs for $69, and they sell their 2-year warranty for $10. Too good to be true?

I just got my $69 refurb, and it looks and feels like it’s new. The battery shows as 100% capacity in Settings’ Battery Health. Apple’s Check Coverage shows it was first bought last December, but it must have been barely used. It came in a gereric box, but the included cable, EarPods, and charger seem legitimately Apple. It is noticeably faster than my 3 year-old Touch 6G, and I’m hoping for much better battery life. I just wish it was thinner, and it would be about perfect.

A fantastic bargain! I likely will get another just because.

I'd go for one too. I poked around the website and the closest thing is about twice the price which is still really cheap. I assume it was a special. Was it retailed by Walmart and not a 3rd party?

It was sold by Walmart, but they’re out of stock now for all colors. They were in stock for at least a week before I pulled the trigger. It’s “Refurbished Straight Talk Apple iPhone SE 32GB Prepaid Smartphone“. You can sign up for stock alerts.

You can go to Straight Talk's site and get what looks to be the same deal of an iPhone SE for $69, but it's "Reconditioned" instead of refurbished. I'm loving my $69 refurb and just ordered a 2nd from them. The improved speed and battery life are significant, and the increased thickness is easily worth it.

I just bought a refurb from Straight Talk. Apple wanted $79 to replace the battery in my son's 6g iTouch, which rarely lasts more than a couple hours a day now. For $10 cheaper, I'll try this, and he can finally play Fortnite on the small screen :|

I was given an SE this week and started to use it as a touch last night

Pros:

1) Faster than an ipod touch 6.
2) Battery life is excelent now i can watch you tube videos much more time, i can wake up next morning and still have way more battery in my phone, no more red battery warnings.
3) Charging is faster but the battery is also brand new.

Cons:

1) Although the SE and the iphone 6s share the same processor and RAM memory they are not equal IMO. The 6s is way more faster and the SE seems and feels more like an IPT7, screen is more cheap and doesn't respond as fast as i wish, specially downloading apps the button doesn't always respond. (ios 12 here).

2) The lack of SIM notificacion each time i restart the device is a little annoying but that's all.

In general is a good replacement for my old ipt6, it's not an iphone XS of course but works as an expensive "ipod touch 7".

My 2 SE refurbs from Straight Talk have been pretty good on performance on iOS 12. The Settings app will freeze 2-3 seconds on occasion. They both came with batteries at 100% capacity and look new.

I have a back up iPhone 7 that I no longer use. Am thinking about replacing my iPod Touch with it since my iPT is at that state where it goes down to red when I take it off the charger, or I use it for one thing and it dies. There’s something going on with the screen where when I press down I see like a blob moving so I figure it’s something with the screen. Not worth it to get a new one or fix it since it’s over two years old..

You need to put a straight talk sim in the phone to activate it initially. Sometimes other Tracfone Sims will work too. I have had to do this myself several times.
