"It's not fun going through [airport] security," [Obama] said, "but we recognize it as important."

No, no we don't. We recognize it as ******** security theater.

Funny, we just let folks through if there are no obvious alarms. When is the last time we completely disassembled a human at an airport because we just *knew* they were hiding something? Why take the absolutist view that we can't harm people when we have reason to believe they are hiding something? I mean, the government has the right to know.

I love how he mentions the airport security thing, because there is absolutely no proof whatsoever that airport security has protected us from anything.

Considering the things that still get through. I actually find a lot of inconsistencies and loopholes going through security itself. My friend flying out of town had forgotten he was carrying his Leatherman. He tossed it in his carry on not thinking. Never even questioned. On his way back he did the same thing, thinking it wasn't an issue, it caused quite the ruckus.

Ok, fine. Let's go with that airport security comparison at face value.

The president has that analogy wrong. He's trying to say that the FBI's stance is "airport security" and that Apple's position is "no security."

That's backwards. In that analogy it's APPLE who is fighting for perfect airport security. The FBI wants Apple to build a special line onto the plane that they, and anyone with enough time and money, can use to waltz onto a plane without having their bag checked.

Not exactly a great argument to make, Mr. President.

Look at it this way...any iPhone 5c, 5s, 6, 6s, or 7 that is running iOS 8-10 is going to become VERY valuable one day...the resale values will skyrocket. Adoption rates of new iOS updates will plumet when the government gets their master key, and everone will turn auto updates off.

The man makes some good points.

Such as the key for Airport security locks already having the key leaked into the public domain ?
How about all those US government employees having their personal data leaked/stolen.

And WHICH government , is the US going to tell the French they are not entitled ?
How about the Turks, Thais, Indonesians, UK, etc etc ?

If you say No to them, then you are saying US lives have worth, lives in other countries.....not so much.
And their governments are less entitled to protect its citizens than the US is.

IF, the US says the lives in other countries have less worth, those other countries may also decide the US lives have less worth. Crimes committed against US citizens in other countries receive a low priority ?, is that what the US wants ?

The US is only 4% of the worlds population, and you are NOT the most important 4% no matter what you tthink.

'If the government can't get in, then everyone is walking around with a Swiss bank account'

That is truly irresponsible. Why can't I have a secure device that protects my information and not be accessible to anyone else on the planet? If we have to accept that the government need access to absolutely everything upon request then we have no privacy whatsoever. You either have privacy or you don't.

1984 is fast approaching.
you can have the world's safest safe in your house. as soon as a judge says..open it, you open it.
same thing.

Do manufacturers of safes have a way to unlock the safes they manufacture? This is an honest question if anyone happens to have the answer. It seems like a good analog for what's going on here.

Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. For those times that they do not, if the government has provided a law fully executed warrant issued by a neutral judge, the government will open the safe through other means, such as a safe-smith or drilling. The problem with this situation with the iPhone is that the government does not have the resources to get into the phone. But, Apple does. That's why they need Apple's assistance. If the government could get into the terrorists phone on their own, they would do so.

People think Trump is scary...but the Obama administration is a whole different beast. And to think he actually taught con law at some point.

"Let's kill this US Citizen because we feel his propaganda is too good."
"Sure, a data dragnet on everyone is great."
"Let's make sure that the government can get into anything."
"Hey, let's track everyone's cellphones. Why not?"
Didn't Trump say his followers shouldn't use or buy Apple products if they didn't give the FBI what they want?

As a President I think he's garbage but I generally agree with the Monsanto Sock Puppet on this issue

Ok... 17,000 people die a year by gunshots in the U.S. That is like 45 a day. Deaths by Muslims are 16 this time.

I mean... in the U.S. you will die by a gunshot from a jewish, catholic, christian, baptist or any other religion before being murdered by a muslim. I am not scared of muslims but some how is where the spotlight is on, if you move the light you will see greater dangers... and iPhones has nothing to do with them.

So you're saying that Muslim Extremists are not a threat? Newsflash-they are

obama has been a great president facing hard odds and harder decisions throughout his presidency. certainly not without his major flaws -- and this right here is particularly high on that list.[/QUOTE

I almost choked on my own spit reading this.

When I choose to travel by air, I know that at the airport I will go through security. However the airport security don't have access to my home 24/7 which is what the FBI is effectively wanting. Worse, what thy wanting is access to everyones phones, world wide, effectively claiming jurisdiction world wide.

"Ya ya, ones and zeros... Hey Tim, can we just use fractions or something? Come on..." - SnarkyObama

They already have access to the wireless networks, right? If they force phone manufacturers to backdoor this stuff, China gets to see what they do. It's the worst possible situation for themselves, and somehow they think this is good. Unreal.

It's amazing that our personal technology has gotten so powerful that it is starting to bump into the realm of national security especially on a domestic level. I totally back Apple's position on this but it is a conundrum.

1. Citizens have a right to total privacy.
2. Terrorists/Pedophiles etc. do not have a right to total privacy if a court has determined that a crime has been committed.

How does one solve this issue? Do we go for the 'greater good' argument. It's only going to get more and more serious from here on out.
