President Obama: 'You Cannot Take an Absolutist View' on Encryption Issue
Of course you can.

Obama in June of 2013 - "You can’t have 100 per cent security and also then have 100 per cent privacy and zero inconvenience."

So......he's piece of **** politician, like all of them. Civil Disobedience, protests, and the finger is all they deserve.

I guess non of you guys can live in a Co-Op in NYC. My old co-op owned the lock on my door - I could not even change it. It would be as crazy as thinking I would have been in danger if they let the FBI into a Unit owned by a criminal for a warrant. They once let the Fire department into an apartment after a fire alarm went off in the unit and could not reach the owner. I lived there for 11 years, never got robbed - never had the FBI, NSA, CIA use their key to invade my apartment either.

Yeah, not really the same thing. 1. You agreed to that when you signed to live at the co-op, and access to the keys is still limited to a group that has the same to loose as you do. No one has agreed to hand access to their privacy to the Federal Government. 2. If there was a situation that warranted it, the Fire Department would have taken the door down by force.

If we're trying to keep this analogous to the physical world, then the government should just develop a way to brute force their way through the encryption. It would take money, time, knowledge and resources, barriers that would help ensure whatever the tool is used responsibly. If you want to make an analogy to a physical lock/key, there are these things called lock picks, they can be used to open just about anything that needs a key. Law enforcement uses them to great effect and sure, anyone can get their hands on a set, but it takes skill, knowledge and time to get through a good lock, more than your average person of nefarious intent can afford. What the government wants Apple to create would let anyone unlock your iPhone with a click if they got their hands on it.

The President of the United States of America said:
Obama cautioned against taking an "absolutist" view on encryption and said American citizens already make concessions to balance privacy with security in other aspects of their lives.
I take an absolutist POV on encryption. I have more sovereignty than the government does. I have rights and FEDGOV has zero.

I use a 5th Amendment claim
I use a 10th amendment claim
I use a BOR claim on personal papers and effects claim.
I use a DOI claim that the government is presumed to be overreaching.

As an outsider of the United States of America (sort of, my entire life until I was 21 was funded by the USA. Thanks to you tax payers BTW!), I never understood the vitriol against Barack Obama. Worst President? I would have figured him to be historically regarded as one of the least effective presidents given the inertia of politics over there. Anyway...

In this thread I do not agree with him.

The problem is there are no good analogies. Phones aren't comparable to anything else, so we can't base our decisions around pretending they are.

Not the same thing and the problem is that's how this con job is being sold. The owner of this phone is not being asked to unlock it, obviously.

Consider that this change in law will be the beginning of relaxation of your right to privacy. It is definitely heading towards all digital storage being remotely scanned in real time by government agencies and it being illegal to hold any digital storage that cannot be remotely accessed. Call me crazy but digital storage is being seen as more dangerous than guns (which kill a lot more people and infringe on your freedom in much bigger ways).
what you're saying is anecdotal at best
judges can issue warrants to check your house. but right now the police doesnt go door to door and randomly 'scan'/search your house.
not sure how you got to your projected scenario.

**** Obama.

Treasonous scumbag.

Obama is technologically inept. I'd expect nothing less from a community organizer who still uses a Blackberry and merrily conducts extrajudicial assassinations of American citizens and routinely flies Pentagon drones all over the United States.

Obama is a totalitarian at heart. Worst president...ever.

Obama is not the worst president ever, but he is the second worst president the past 45 years and one of the worst presidents ever. Obama’s a lying ******* coward, he’s a USA hating, anti-American, treasonous traitor. “**** Obama,” is right:

What's with all of the Obama bashing?! I mean, he gave us free phones, some stuff, some other stuff, and now my mom was able to get the heart transplant she wanted, thanks to the Obama Healthcare Act. He made warned us about those crazy ass veterans by signing the NDAA. He was the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Never mind that his mother was a white hooker! Who cares!!! The dude hopped on a stealth hello chopter and personally killed Osama Beans Ladle! And while doing all of that, FOR US, he makes sure to rack up the most debt in history, all so our children's children won't have to worry about money. Because worrying about money is needless when you don't have any and have easy access to everyone else's. This man is a national HE ROW! Not to mention his husband is very handsome. I don't have the time or money to go on vacation so he selflessly does that for me and wracks up a nice tab so he can live for the both of us. GEEZ guys! LEAVE OBAAAAMAAA ALOOOOONE!

Now if you'll excuse me... I have to get some sleep for my operation tomorrow. My left leg is longer than my right, so they're going to do a procedure that will help my knee grow.

The devil has taken his mask off.

Obama is a complete idiot. I despair for mankind, I really do, when the most powerful man in the world has no frigging clue when it comes to the most important issue of our day: the preservation of our humanity.

We might as well turn the lights off and call it a day on earth, as there would be no point in living in a totalitarian society, which is what we face with the current demonic forces in the United States government and the FBI.

This is not just a fight between Apple and the FBI; this is a fight between good and evil. Tim Cook must don the breastplate of righteousness and slaughter the wretched evil that festers within the walls of Washington.

May good prevail.

So if a hypothetically unbreakable physical safe was manufactured, what? It would be illegal?

Good point. Using drones over US soil to "to assist with search and rescue, floods, fires or National Guard exercises" is horrifying....

Judge-Dredd-Movie-2012.jpg "I am the law!" Oh Obama...what do you know about technology? You wasted my 1hr32mins and 52 seconds of my life.
What good is the "law" if you goons (obama and his buddies) don't even follow them...or don't even know what they are?

Speaking of technology....aren't you the one with the blackberry and not iphone?
Tim won't allow this to happen...and nobody from gov't will force business to make that happen.
I'm voting for Judge dredd for the next POTUS.....he's the guy by the law...and execute anyone who violates them.

Such as the key for Airport security locks already having the key leaked into the public domain ?
How about all those US government employees having their personal data leaked/stolen.

And WHICH government , is the US going to tell the French they are not entitled ?
How about the Turks, Thais, Indonesians, UK, etc etc ?

If you say No to them, then you are saying US lives have worth, lives in other countries.....not so much.
And their governments are less entitled to protect its citizens than the US is.

IF, the US says the lives in other countries have less worth, those other countries may also decide the US lives have less worth. Crimes committed against US citizens in other countries receive a low priority ?, is that what the US wants ?

The US is only 4% of the worlds population, and you are NOT the most important 4% no matter what you tthink.
I'm Australian mate.

Anyone here seen/remember this picture?

TSA-Keys-640x360.jpg

Those are the TSA "master keys" for unlocking airplane luggage. Since airline security has been deemed important, and related rights subject to "intermediate scrutiny", you have the choice of either having your checked-in luggage completely unlocked, or you can get TSA-approved luggage that locks and which the TSA can unlock using one of the above master keys.

But...there's a problem with these master keys. Luggage makers presumably knew it, and complained about it, before consenting to "comply or ______". Sure, TSA insisted, those keys would be kept perfectly safe.

Then, for an article about them, the above picture was taken and published. And within hours, functioning uncontrolled unauthorized copies were made.

THAT is why we don't want the FBI et al having backdoors into our data.

Do manufacturers of safes have a way to unlock the safes they manufacture? This is an honest question if anyone happens to have the answer. It seems like a good analog for what's going on here.

A skilled person can break into a safe. You have to have the blueprints of the safe because if you do it wrong you can lock it forever since safes have built in mechanisms to prevent people from trying to break them open (that is the point of a safe afterall) and you need to have some heavy duty cutting tools.

It's actually a decent analogy because to break into an iPhone, which the FBI could do, you need skilled people at the helm and you risk losing the contents if you do it wrong.

Edit for wording and info
