No he doesn't. All he has to say is the guy sold it to him. It's one man's word against the other. The police can't do jack without evidence of theft or a confession.

If you can provide proof of ownership (receipt/invoice), apple registration, and the other guy can't, then yea they can do something about it. This is why you get a bill of sale when you buy anything used. Now the chances of the police giving any care at all to the situation are pretty much none. Go get your iPod back.

I should correct something, the " kid" in question is actually a later teen/20 yr old dude. My boyfriend and I actually went over the dudes house and I actually held the ipod in question in my hand and recorded the serial #. The neighbor also had his buddy there he said he got it from to vouch for his story. According to the friend said he bought this 32gb Ipod touch from Walmart for around $200 last year. Correct me if I'm wrong but did I miss out on a hell of a sale at walmart last year? By the way, before he ripped us off, he did entertain us with some stories of his past thievery and the fact he has a record of theft. With having just the registration online, should that be enough for law enforcement to do anything about it? *I can pull up my apple support profile that has the ipod registered my profile with the serial number shown.

So you have a boyfriend and he hasn't gone and get it back? Lol

Or he can just give it to a family member /friend and have them hold on to it that way you have no evidence

If the kid doesn't give it back, then you're out of luck.
The police aren't going to do anything about it.

I think you should cut your losses and be more careful next time.

It is very hard to have a neighbour as your enemy.

Unless you have proof that the unit is indeed yours, I suggest you let it slide, & in the future move to a better neighbourhood. It sucks, I know, but I've been in the same situation before.

He can claim that you sold, gave it to him and the police can't do jack. It's your word against his.

So I can steal anything from anyone, claim I paid for it, and get away with it? Wow, I can't imagine why everyone doesn't do that!

Seriously, he would need some kind of proof that he paid for it. And if he's got a criminal record for stealing, and the OP doesn't, the police pretty much automatically side against the person with a record.

OP, if you actually held the ipod in your hands, why not just walk away with it? Tell him to call the police--if he stole it, and you know he did, there's no way he will call the police. Call his bluff. And your boyfriend was there in case he just decided to beat you up.

Based on that, the police will never listen to anyone if they say they had a robbery at home if there was no CCTV.
The police are their for the citizens and will listen to both parties and will weigh the evidence against each other and decide in favour of one party.
Obviously, in this case if you have documents or a screenshot of the iPod with the serial number in your name, and he just has his word together with his criminal record, I think only an idiot would think you'd lose. I'd recommend to alert the police and they'll submit a ticket for you and get it sorted sometime soon.

Good luck and hope you get it back.

P.S I wouldn't advise you to go yourself to your neighbour as he has a criminal record and obviously isn't the neighbour anyone would want to have. He may come to get you back another time for accusing him and causing a commotion on his doorstep. Its best to let the police deal with it. :)

The police won't even bother.
