Hi Everyone,

Here we are in November 2022 and I am considering picking up a Pro Display XDR. I really love the size and resolution of this display, especially coming from a 2020 27-in Retina 5K iMac. I am not a colorist or high end video editor that requires color precision, only someone that wants a bigger retina display with more real estate (no, I am not willing to consider a bigger 4K display).

What are the communities thoughts on the Pro Display XDR in late 2022? The monitor is three years old now, still extremely expensive, and I am just afraid that with the new Mac Pro replacement rumored to be around the corner (with a 7K display alongside it), that sinking $6000+ into the current display is a waste of money.

Thoughts?

With the rumor mill saying not to expect new Macs (and thus no new monitor) until after the New Year, you can count on at least three months before anything is available. So, the question is -- can you wait 3+ months or do you need the display now. If now, then you get three months before anything new and likely it'll be a minor revision, anyway. Somehow I doubt the 7K rumor.

I've been in the same position recently but I just couldn't justify the outlay on a new one. I started to look at used ones - there's usually a couple on eBay - which made more sense. But unless you need the capabilities of the XDR or have the money to burn/someone else is paying, I'd be tempted to hold off a bit to see what happens with this new rumoured display? Or displays?

I'm now using a non-Apple display, but I really, really wish they'd make their monitors in a variety of sizes as they're the only monitors you know will work at every resolution, with reliable sleep behaviour, very bright screens etc etc.

in the same boat. I had to downgrade from an iMac 5K display to a 32 4k dell display and since working with a lot of text, this is really noticeable to me.

I work mostly with text as well (in addition to some medical imaging) and I'm quite satisfied with my Studio Displays. I bought two to make up for the smaller size and resolution compared with the 32" 6K XDR, and I'm very satisfied. The mini-LED backlighting wouldn't do much for my purposes, and two Studio Displays was still half the price of a single XDR.

XDR was pretty much dead-on-arrival other than the large size and the industrial design which were great. I was/am interesting in getting one for those reasons, but man, it's so hard to justify the trade-offs.

Yeah, this is the big driver for me. I have the 27-in now, but really want to go up. I think I might wait until after the holidays and reassess. It's so hard to make a call when it feels like new hardware is imminent, but I don't need the monitor today, so I guess waiting is the smart thing to do.

Have there been any further rumors around 7K or other updates? I assume 6K@120Hz is out given DSC is a no-go for Apple and TB5 is not available on any Apple hardware right now.

Waiting till after the holidays and reassessing seems wise.

It is a shame, though, that we have very few choices. I deal with text all day and I t’s all that I can do to put out the funds for the ASD.

Like others, I may invest in a second ASD.

I’m in the same boat. 32” is my preferred screen size, I am willing to pay $5,000, but not for 3+ year old tech that about to be upgraded.

I bet the replacement is ready too and Apple is just waiting for the Mac Pro to release them together.

I don’t think a new XDR is coming until the new Mac Pro does. My prediction is Q3 2023.

"Pro Display XDR - Wasted Money in 2022?"

Unless one was using it for earning revenue, the Pro display has ALWAYS been "a waste of money"...

Waste of money no matter how you want to slice it but depends on how much $6,000 is to you. I know some that make double than that in a week.

Just get Studio Display on sale now bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1694969-REG/apple_mk0u3ll_a_studio_display_standard.html

I wish Apple made the Studio Display in 27" and 32" I'd buy that in a heartbeat. I also want a 32" display, but I'm not paying 6K for one with a stand
Yip. After trying out a few multi-screen setups, I've come to the conclusion that what I really want & need is a single, larger Apple monitor. But like you say @Blaine, I can't justify 5/6K for one!

i think you'll see one next year come out with the MAc Pros, hoping for OLED

Even if it’s not OLED, if they can make a screen as good as on the MacBook Pros (XDR, ProMotion, mini LED), they’ll have a winner on their hands.

Weird really, that for over a year now the laptops have much better screens than the $5,000 monitor.

In the same situation as well. In ordered one last dec bu canceled when delivery was pushed into mid feb and I needed it to be delivered in 2021 for tax reasons. Really expected a new mac pro and updated xdr screen in 2022 so I waited for that. Since that didn’t come true and prices are rising I am seriously reconsidering the current XDR 6K. But as a mbp16 owner I am spoiled. That screen is marvelous. That is what I want to have as a big screen. But the question is, can that even be achieved? 6k@120Hz, 10bit and hdr?

Actually the only difference you can notice in real life between M1 Pro 16" and XDR Display is dpi. Nothing else.
