I could care less what Windows users think of anything Apple, especially the iPad.

You're thinking that the iPad and the iPod touches are the same - which is why you're saying these are analogies. Nope. The Corvette vs. Toyota Corolla is a perfect analogy.

Just because the parts/specs are similar except for size doesn't make it the same! Tell me that you get the same experience from these two women:

The only difference I see is, the one on top has a sort of dead pan stare, and the pic of the girl on the bottom is smiling. ;)

The only thing similar between the iPad and an iPod Touch is the user interface.
A Ferrari has the same user interface (gas, brake, clutch, and steering wheel) as a Ford Focus, but they're completely different machines – otherwise incomparable.
Same with the iPad vis-a-vis iPod Touch.
^ this.

The experience is completely different and not a lot of naysayers will know that unless one physically plays with this device for a bit.

Usually when people have told me the iPad is nothing but a big iPod touch... It's somewhat been directed in a negative form and in a tone of "why should I waste my money" ?

It's much more than a bigger screen, to me at least. It really feels like cutting edge new technology that I'm not used to using. Having such a thin yet sharp screen right on my lap is beyond the definition of an oversized iPod touch.. Even though it's essential just that!

Could not wait...

It should not take a long time now to figure out the failure of tablets was not OS it was running or set of features - it is its completely useless FORM FACTOR.:D

Any netbook is more versatile and more practical device in this size/weight/price range.

I checked it in the Apple Store at lunch time on Monday: No magic, no waiting lines, no lines to a register. I saw some folks in the accessories section shopping for iPad cases(pre-order kind) and bunch of folks/kids checking out iPad and then leaving...Figures...

If Apple would be stupid enough to release 3G version with in 30 days - they may get 300,000 returns as hard core fans would move to 3G version (consider it as an upgrade or Gen. 2).

This is a joke, right? You don't actually believe that there is as big a difference between the iPod Touch and the iPad as there is between a Ferrari and a Focus?

They are shaped the same. Externally the LOOK of them is almost identical. The touch may be a little more rounded. Maybe the shaping of the metal back is slightly different, but in terms of design philosophy, they are the same.

Needless to say this is NOT true of the focus and the ferrari.

Additionally, the interface is identical. Both have the same interface. The way you use the device is identical. You click apps. You run them. You type on the touch keyboard. Some apps can be better because they can use the extra space. That does NOT make the device fundamentally different.

If anything, I'd say it's not a Focus -> Ferrari, it's 2 seat Ferari -> 4 seat Ferari with a bigger engine & more trunk space.

And this isn't really an insult. It is the truth. Yes, it will function differently because it is bigger. Personally, neither the Touch OR the iPad are for me. I prefer mac to windows, btw, so I am not really biased here.

The iPad is itunes vending machine$$$$$$$$$ It also makes a great mouse pad!!!!!

Well... first off, I think the "mac vs pc" war is a bit lame. I wouldn't take any critcism of any products I use personally, to the point of bothering me (much less to make my blood boil). They're just products we buy by choice. I'd suggest to lighten up: life's too short to waste it in such arguments (unless you're a major Apple stockholder, in which case I'd say boil on!) :)

I'd even say that frankly, I do like the fact of Apple computers not being mainstream, and most people not really understanding them: sets a way of differentiation when some of my corporate clients look at it and start asking questions about OS X, or just admire the design - they're not used to see macs - and the quality they produce - in my line of work. For Pro users, It will be a shame when Apple gets as big and popular as PCs... so the more PC users go against macs, the better - fierce competition is what made Apple competent in the first place.

Thanks for posting this. I got into a HUGE fight Monday night with a PC fanatic (gamer) who basically said "If you aren't smart enough to handle all of the little quirks windows sends you (by crashing all the time, being un-user friendly, not being intuitive etc...) then by all means you should have an apple." I found it insulting and frankly an uneducated assumption about apple users. It was still bothering me today. But after reading your post I am looking at it in a much different light. Thanks for the perspective!

Where's OP gone?

Whoa! I left my last post on this subject at midnight and I woke up and seen that there are 69 more replies. I guess I opened up a can of worms. Well for starters, I should say that I should not have singled out just windows users that state that it is a oversized iPod. As I use windows in my house as well. I have a iMac, Mac Mini, iPod Touch, iPhone 3Gs, an iPad Wi-fi and and a iPad 3g on order. I also have 1 windows laptop, and a PC that I built from scratch running Windows 7. So I am in fact a windows user as well, but i prefer Mac over PC any day of the time. I did not mean to single out windows users per say as anyone even Mac users can state that it is a oversized iPod.

Actually thinking more about it and then getting up and reading all these replies. . . It doesn't seem to bother me as much now, if someone makes that statement. To me , it is their loss if they don't want to purchase a iPad.

But this is a free country and we do have freedom of speech. It works both ways. I see that this was quite a discussion. I love seeing all the different points of view. Thanks for all your replies. Feel free to continue if you wish.

Keep in mind that I take back the part about saying that Windows Users are the only ones that made that statement. I should have chosen my words a bit more carefully.

Funny. Good One.:D

I could care less what Windows users think of anything Apple, especially the iPad.

Actually my thinking is starting to head into that direction now. It should not bother me or I should not care what others think. What is important is how do I feel about the product. I don't have to prove the product to anyone, be it a Windows user or a fellow Mac user.

About the iPad - I've heard this from lots of Apple users too - even in this forums. The claim is that the iPad is an oversized iPod Touch - and personally I do agree. I can see certain activities in which the iPad will prove its value - but for most, it'll be a new shiny expensive toy. As a concept, I guess it's a nice start, but I do hope the product evolves to something more useful - like having OS X, a USB port, real multitasking, 3G connection, a webcam, etc. As of now, I just don't think its a great product IMO.

Cheers!
I agree with most of what you say. The iPad is a new and useful tool that can change the way we do things. Look at a real estate agent showing various features on a house visually on an iPod. Look at a physician explaining your heart blockage visually on an iPod or a car salesman showing the inner workings of a new engine. What can be done in this fashion is only limited by one's imagination. I would not depend on the iPad to develop these apps but on a MBP or something like it. It is not a computer to work on but a device to easily use for seeing or hearing what is there with some limited computer power.

If you buy Apple products, you're in a minority. That's the way it is. Some people envy Apple users, some people despise them.

People at my office know I love Apple products. Most are excited about Apple things, and ask me to tell them more. I enjoy these people.

But a few have told me that Macs aren't for 'real work'. I just laugh. I know they have no idea. They're still thinking the Mac in 1984, and there's no use convincing them otherwise. I brush their opinions off, and think to myself, 'if they want to intentionally keep themselves in the dark, and have their own distorted view of reality, so be it. Until they open their mind, I can't convince them.'

To some people, specs are everything. To some people, User Experience is everything. The first set of people are PC people, the second set are Apple people.

Who would you rather listen to your opinions?

So true and I do find it hilarious that this particular fellow who was so condescending about Mac users strutted away from my house happily listening to his IPOD. "Hmmm... hypocrite shouldn't you be listening to a Zune?"

Also apple is very beneficial to Windows users. Apple now has the strength to star competing with Microsoft. And if it wan't for apple I think we would still be on windows xp :D

Congratulations, you're an adult.

I'm a Mac user and I call it an oversized iPod. Because it is...

It's just a large iPod Touch, but that's nothing to complain about really, except for when they call it a revolutionary and magical device. It's been out in a smaller, pocket sized form for years...

Also, Windows based Tablets have far more content available to them, and it's easy to run a simple anti-virus program, so that's not really an issue is it?

You notice how quickly all those feminine hygiene jokes are gone now that the iPad has launched? A lot of the comics that were making those jokes a year ago are iPad owners now. (And yes, the iPad jokes predated the actual iPad announcement.)

As for caring what people think of my purchase of an iPad? All that matters is whether or not it works for me. Right now it does (mostly) and I (eagerly) await the OS4 announcement to find out if some of the things it doesn't do so well are gonna get fixed soon.

This is a joke, right? You don't actually believe that there is as big a difference between the iPod Touch and the iPad as there is between a Ferrari and a Focus?

The only Focus that fits that analogy is the Euro-Spec RS.

Austin Martin Vantage / Austin Martin Rapide is a far better analogy, or Porsche Boxster / Porsche Panamera or Cayenne.

Truth be told, in any automotive analogy, the iPad is an SUV.

You might tell him ..... And if you're not a good enough driver to deal with sudden unintended acceleration, then by all means you should have a safe car instead of a Toyota.

Nice! I will keep it in my weapons cache for future tech fights. As a point of reference for all of this, the reason I got an apple to begin with was because of 3 crashed PC's in a five year span that had to be completely wiped, one of which never returned after the "blue screen of death." Funnily enough, at that time I sought his help and he was completely useless. So by his own advice, I guess he should get a Mac too!

Is IS an oversized, revved up iPod Touch, and I'm saying that typing on one right now.

In many ways it is an oversized Ipod touch, but in many ways it isn't. For example, it runs the Iwork programs that I use for business everyday which makes it an ad-hoc laptop for me that is infinitely more fun to use and even more portable. When you consider the various features it is like a laptop, a portable video player, if you have the VGA cable then it's like apple TV, it's a book reader such as Kindle, it's an ipod, it's a tablet and it's a software store whenever you want one. Plus, it surfs the web. Any way you look at it, it's pretty darn cool!

It may not be something for everyone and it has limitations. It isn't perfect and I don't always view it through rose-colored glasses with glimmery eyes, but I do feel that it is a great product at a reasonable price that enhances my life and hopefully yours too!

I refer to it as an over-sized iPod and I use both a PC and a Mac. How else would you describe it to someone else who really isn't in-the-know? Magical? :p

Apple: ,,The iPod is an undersized iPad''
Windows: ,,The iPod was first...''
Apple: ,,Mac came before windows''
/end.
