I mean of course memories are faulty over time. You have some rose tinted googles on for the halcyon days of Steves return. It wasn't as good as you remember.
But . . . I had the Public Beta of Mac OS X, the one you actually had to pay $29.95 for. I was running on it an iBook G3 my freshman year at college, running Microsoft Office through the emulation mode on it, and it was slow as a bear.
However, I recall everything *working* much better over OS 9 (and 8 and before). System 7, OS 8, and System 9 were prone to just completely crashing out of the blue. I liked those operating systems, but you could just have a "bomb" appear out of nowhere and crash the system.
OS X changed that. Yes, it was extraordinarily slow and not feature complete for the first few versions, but I recall it also being extremely stable.
By the time you got to Tiger, which had Spotlight, there really was nothing missing that I would long for today.
There are so many basic functions that just don't work for me today.
As I mentioned at the moment, I am having an impossible time backing up and/or importing photos/videos from my iPhone. I've noticed Apple has fewer error messages. There are things that just don't work without explanation. I'm someone who relied on iPhoto very heavily, and I can't get Image Capture/Photos/Preview to work now (if you Google iPhone doesn't show up in Image Capture) this has been a widespread problem for years across many operating system versions. And they can get away with it by people just saying, "Just use iCloud."
There was a "Get a Mac" ad that featured a woman who "saved Christmas" by being able to import the family photos from their camera on a Mac when they couldn't on a PC. I'm at literally the opposite point now. I have been able to get the iPhone videos/photos to show up on a relative's PC, but I am hellbent on figuring out why I can't get them to show up on three different Macs across three operating systems. I want it to work. And a lot of things just don't work.
I'm not saying my memory is perfect. But I think I would remember showstopping problems like this.
