Some people value portability over raw screen size, especially if they have a desk setup with a large external display they can plug into. If I were constantly flying, for example, I would rather have something in the 12-13" range that's now crowding the tray table. As it is when I'm flying I tend to use my 11" iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard over my 14" MBP.
Valuing portability is a "want" and not a "need". Valuing screen size is a "need" and not a "want". Larger screen help reduce eyes strain and also increase productivity. I hope Apple goes with the latter.
Absolutely. I have a 2018 Intel 15” MBP and the display and performance is totally fine for me, but it’s about to become vintage. I had a 14” Pro for work and the screen was too small, yet it was thicker than my old 15”. And the 16” is just a monster in all dimensions. A 15” screen is perfect. Hell, I’d be happy with a 15” Air with an M1. I know people are excited for 3nm but first generation Apple silicon already has more than enough power for my needs.
I disagree. 15" is still subpar. 16" (16:9 and not 16:10) should be the minimal size. 17" (16:9 or 16:10) would be ideal. 18" would be heavenly.
I don’t think most students want a 15” laptop.
Back when the first Macbook came out, every student I know wanted a 15" instead of a 13".

I really like my 13" MBA first time getting a non-Pro model, but my eyes would really like the bigger 15" screen. So what CPU they put in it will determine if I move from the 13 to a 15. My gut feeling is if it has a M3 chip it won't be a MacBook Air it will called MacBook not Air or Pro an inbetween.

They know how much people want a 15’’ MBA so they’ll release it with the M2 first before upgrading the entire MBA line to M3 later this year.
Allows them to get rid of remaining M2 inventory, maintain margins and double-milk early adopters.
Or they can keep selling the M2 Air after the M3 Air comes out. Or they can make a Macbook SE with M2.

I am suspecting $1599 for the entry level model, potentially with 256 GBs of storage and surprise 8 GBs of DDR5 RAM. Apple will be focusing on the screen and M3 SoC as the big deal. Need 512 GBs and 16 GBs, and you will easily see it push to $1899.
That is my biggest worry. Unless their price come down, I may never own another MacBook again. Ironically, my first and only MacBook was the very first MacBook (2006).

I moved from 2012 15" MBP (Open Cored Monterey) and iPad Pro 10.5" to M1 13" Air and by and large think its great - it runs most of the iPad apps I needed and is significantly better on battery and performance the the MBP - this 15" makes sense of my use case and will be tempted depending on price and performance.
There seems to be a lot of hate out there for the M2 but wouldn't it make sense for the Air to be M2 (regular and pro) and the MacBook Pro be M3 (Pro, Max, Ultra if not to hot)And keep the Ultra and Extreme or what ever they decide for the MacPro - this would be a huge differentiator and one they could apply through the Mini, Studio and MacPro Range as well with perhaps an overlay at top chip being low chip for next desktop), iMac should follow the "current" CPU as the studio perhaps offering the convenience of fully integrated system with decent and current spec..... just trying to find a logical break for the product range as my next machine to be replaced is my trusty 5,1 MacPro (also open cored on Big Sur) but a Mini M2 pro with 32GB Ram and a Base Studio M1 Max are with in spitting distance or price and performance

It’s over for my iPad if they give us an 11-inch model.
Just make sure all the iOS apps you use and want can be run on AS - if dev hasn't "ported" it it won't run as you can no longer side load them using 3rd Party tools to the Mac. I moved to M1 and have one app that I do miss (Yamaha AV Receiver Controller) have reached out to them and hopefully they fix it so I can.

I was really skeptical of the Air losing its wedge shape, but the wife just got a new Air and wow, is it ever slick! I have the 2021 Air and she has the 2022 Air. I want hers! 🤣
I am at the opposite end of the spectrum and love my M1 wedge Air. I also don't understand the appeal of the midnight M2 Air. Costco has several MacBook models on display and the generic M2 Air laptop shape is very meh to me. The midnight color also looks so dull and drab in person.

I really enjoy using the wedge Air after coming from a 2015 MBP. The new M2 Air design effectively drives me back to a MBP for my next laptop. I'm just waiting to see what the 15" Air has to offer in design, price, specs, and weight before making a final call. But for sure I'm not giving up my M1 wedge for the M2 Air.

I swear I hope this product is an M3, and we get a “sneak peak” of the Mac Pro at WWDC.

I’m becoming increasingly jaded at Year 12 of Tim Cook’s Apple.
I keep wondering why it has to be a M3? Nothing has shipped with a M3, and if you start to have M2 MBA and M3 MBA it could get messy like the M1 Max/Ultra that could immediately be updated to a M2 Max, and not have to wait for another M2 Ultra. Like why produce Macs that give marketing a big headache?

It's about SoC availability and partially the fact that a 15.5" MBA could have a slightly larger battery to offset the display draws more energy. Yes going to larger MBA means slightly increased weight and slightly less battery run time.

As you may recall, Apple announced last week that its Worldwide Developers Conference will kick off with a keynote address on June 5. And since it looks like Apple will not have a spring event this year, it’s a logical conclusion that Apple will unveil the 15-inch MacBook Air at WWDC, much like the M2 model last year.

However, Apple shipping the 15-inch MacBook Air sometime before WWDC seems more likely. As it has numerous times over the past several months, Apple could do a press release announcement for the laptop without tying it to an event, especially if it’s identical to the current model other than the larger display. Essentially, its announcement will be like that of the 10-generation iPad last October–a product that, while new and slightly different from previous models, doesn’t have major significant changes that warranted an unveiling at an event.

Also, the word is that Apple wants the WWDC keynote to spotlight the rumored headset. While there will be plenty of Mac talk during the keynote, if Apple were to reveal a new Mac at that time, it’s much more likely to be the Mac Pro.

Best guesses about the first M3 drops seems like October 2023. Which way do you think Apple will select?

Couldn't agree more. I want to say I own a wedge MBA for once. I mean the wedge shape is what makes a MBA a MBA.

I bought a 16" MBP last year, and it's WAY more power than I will ever needed. I simply wanted the larger screen.

And yes, it's a beast to carry around. What's funny is I owned a 2013 15" MBP for many years, and the 2021 MBP is barely heavier than the 2013 one...but the 2021 feels heavier in very way.

Anyways, I'm contemplating on getting the 15" MPA based on better portability.
Well said. I need the GPU power of my 16” MBP, but it is too damn bulky and heavy — so I’m willing to trade down to a 15” Air if it comes close to the 2021 M1 Max GPU specs. I suspect that many proclaiming that the 16” MBP is thin and light are either (a) not using one, (b) use it mostly stationary not while traveling, or (c) coming from a bulkier and heavier PC.

I think a 15” MBA will be very popular, and will take some of the sales away from 14” and 16” MBP, and will also encourage some of the people in the market for a 13” MBA to upgrade. It depends if you are doing jobs which need the CPU grunt of a Pro, or whether you are mostly looking at light use.

The M3 will probably be a 30% CPU speed boost over the M2, assuming that as rumoured its produced on TSMCs N3E process, and an unknown stride forward in the GPU. Which means the 15” MBA may well be some 50% faster than the original M1 MBA, which is a good amount and may tempt some people to buy a new laptop.

I think people focus too much on size and typical specifications and nobody question what innovations this new laptop could bring. Just bigger MBA or slimmer/lighter MBP, I really couldn't care less and is definitely not a buying factor for me. Apple should do more and better than that.

My wife just got a 13” MBA to replace her 2017 13” MBP and she is stoked with it…

I must say I’m rather keen on one myself to replace my 2019 13” MBP…

but a 15” version sounds even more interesting… but it’s not going to be all that light is it?

theres a lot to consider here… it’s almost as if it shouldn’t be called an Air….. maybe just a 15” MacBook…
