You don't own one, do you? Between plex and an ever growing selection of home media/NAS streaming solutions, Showtime, Netflix, HBO, CBS, NBC - Amazon prime video on the way, BBC iPlayer in development for the UK - This is an open platform. It is the exact opposite of 'closed off'.

No, I don't own one. But I do know that Apple's rules for iPhone apps just don't square with my idea of fair and freedom enhancing. I see no reason to suspect that Apple's rules for Apple TV apps will be any better and I think they should be for a device that has the potential to control everything that I watch.

Compared to other video boxes, maybe? I haven't used other boxes. We've been using various Mac Minis for 10 years as an audio/video server. "Closed" means you can only install apps approved by Apple. That means that freedom is at Apple's discretion. Not that I watch porn, but will Apple seriously approve porn apps (or other media protected by free speech, but not considered politically correct)? Nope, didn't think so. While today, Apple's limitations of freedom seem ok (at least to me), that does not mean that I want to install technology that is not open for me to use legally as I see fit. Tell me I will always be able to install any app I want on the Apple TV and I'm good to go. Tell me I have to live in Apple's politically correct world and I'm not.

The "walled garden" limitations were acceptable with phones because of the impact on the carrier network and the phone was never meant to be a general media device, having these limitation on my home TV is not acceptable. It is just like Samsung saying they have installed video analysis software that prevents naked bodies from being displayed, since it might damage their corporate image (Ok bad example, because it is impossible to damage Samsung's corporate image, but I think you get the point).

Now it may be convenient and it may be cost effective, but only if you are willing to ignore how the technology can be used in the future to control your behavior. I want openness and freedom and am willing to vote with my pocketbook. Our forefathers voted for freedom with their lives and here we are giving up our freedom bit by bit just because its free, cheap or convenient.

I see your points, but they apply to most if not all set top boxes. I do not see a future where there will be boxes that allow apps from other platforms etc to be installed without limitations.

The porn argument by Apple is tired, but it is the only element remaining for the Apple TV to be the best box on the market. With the suction that Apple has on the developer front, it will only be a matter of time for it to have the widest array of apps and content providers in the market. Roku and some of the others might now be ahead of the curve with content provision, but they lack the developer support.

I personally have never bumped into the restrictions that Apple poses on me. Never have I looked for a particular app or functionality or media that was banned by Apple. My preferences might be mainstream, but I wonder how many people are actually bothered or feel inhibited by the fact that Apple might not allow porn or any other "extreme" content.

In general, the fact that Apple "restricts" as a process is not a reason for me personally to not use their products. Actually the amount of stuff coming through their "wall" is still much larger and of higher quality than what comes through on other set top boxes, so I think they are doing it right.

I think the Apple TV 4 set the stage for the Apple TV 4K. This will make for easier marketing and upselling than calling it Apple TV 5. I love my Apple TV but own a 4K TV so an HDMI 2.0 port was the only thing that held me back from buying one. Apple's biggest screw up and embarrassment was delivering an iPhone 6S capable of 4K video but not giving people the means to deliver the content to their 4K TVs. Fail Apple. Fail.

That's complete nonsense.

Sorry, but you're wrong. See the posted chart from earlier in the thread. You'd have to sit 5-7 feet from a 50" set to tell it from a 1080p one of the same size and I don't know too many that watch TV at 5 feet away. People see the 4K demos in the store and stand right in front of it (2-3 feet and go WOW!) They take it home and it looks sharp at 20 feet. But what they don't realize is that 1080P set looks just as sharp at 20 feet. Your eyes can't resolve detail beyond a certain distance and that's a scientific FACT. But then a lot of people don't believe in science these days based on the news regarding various subjects so I can't be too shocked with "nonsense" statements.

If ATV 4 wasn't ready for prime time why release it.

Because by the time anything gets manufactured in volume there's always a better next generation in the lab, and the chips for the even better next next generation are still in design, and ideas for the next next next are being invented. So no tech company would ever release any product if they waited.

The remote is not horrible. And the functionality it provides in conjunction with the ATV itself is amazing compared to previous generations. But it could use some tweaking. The design needs to be more asymmetrical, so you know when you pick it up in the dark which end is the bottom, and can then operate it without looking at it.

Also, while this isn't a huge deal I have noticed that when the remote is sitting on my nightstand and I reach over to push the Siri button to issue a command it doesn't hear me well enough to work. Why? Because the microphone is on the bottom. So you have to pick up the remote to use Siri.

Yes, the symmetrical remote--LOL. I found that to be a problem at first. The impact of the problem diminished quite a bit when I adjusted to the fact that it's Bluetooth, so I can use it backwards. Since I click the pad to activate the box, I use the "clickiness" to recognize the device orientation, and my hand now reflexively reverses the device if needed. It took me about a week to get used to this, and it is now automatic. I never look anymore.

. . . .

The problem for me is that the restriction process is totally opaque. If Apple said, "We support freedom and will allow any app that does (or does not) do .......", then that would be ok with me. If Apple said that they will maintain complete control over free apps as they do now, but will generally allow any paid apps costing more than some value that don't represent security concerns, then I would be ok with that. But they don't.

What Apple does say is that they reserve the right to allow or disallow any app for any reason. I am ok with that for my phone, but not for my main source of media, it violates my concept of freedom of speech.

damn hate hate. True, no 4K YET but other than that it's just opinion.

This.

Even by Jan 2017, a full year after 4K Blu-Ray hits, 1080p content will still outnumber 4K content 10 to 1. This is another reason why I think even today it's way to early to be jumping on the 4K bandwagon.

I still cannot get over the fact that so many people have upgraded their TV sets to watch such a tiny relative proportion of 4K content. By the time "true 4K" is here and in a reasonable quantity when compared to 1080p content, it'll be time to upgrade their TV's again.

Suckers lol.

Well if there is dramatically increased performance as claimed (A10?), we're getting into console-quality territory and Apple needs to develop their own game controller.

Please Please Please have 4K!!!
Not wasting money purchasing one without it... Not holding my breath though.

Cue more hate for 4K... or pretty much any technology Apple chooses not to adopt... I've been enjoying a 4K TV for a while now. It is stunning and even upscaled 1080p looks better than 1080p on a HD TV (Kept the old TV next to the new one for comparison). My mind goes back to when the Apple TV 2 was not 1080p... the same old arguments came out until Apple adopted it on the Apple TV 3.

"Upscaled 1080p" is still 1080p for the purpose of an Apple TV discussion.

I'm not sure they are the same old arguments. I don't think the "you can't tell the difference" argument would apply the same.

I have a 55 inch 4K and can tell the difference. Small details are much more noticeable from a distance vs 1080P.

wider color gamut / high dynamic range - Rec 2020 / DCI P3 (like the new Imacs) / 10 bit support will give a better improvement in viewer satisfaction than 4K on a medium sized or below TV.

maybe the new ATV hardware will include those improved color standards. This technology will start to roll-out in updated physical 4K blu-ray disks in 2016.

I had to chuckle when this rumor dropped.

So many in the ATV4 forums were telling us how they "future proofed" with the nearly pointless 64gb purchase (simply a no use money transfer to Apple's coffers) because the new ATV would be the flagship for a long long time ...

:)

Side note. Hope they offer a Siri pro remote with some actual "use case and shape of human hand" design theory that goes into it.

Reminds me of Tim Cook's botched reveal of the NEW new iPad leaving people like me who'd just bought the then new iPad with an old new iPad

Thank god I didn't buy this thing , something told me something wasn't quite right...

Very glad I did buy it. Great product, fantastic upgrade to the 3 I have in every room of the house. Loving it. Perfect? No. Great? Yes. When the new iPad came out, did it stop your previous model working? Nope. Buy technology, it will be upgraded. Deal with it.

Disagree that this is unlikely, and past product cycles have no bearing on current and future Apple TV upgrade plans. Apple is a little late to the game with the latest Apple TV, and it they want to stay relevant, they better start updating the Apple TV yearly just like their competition.
