The question here is....

The real question is has Apple included fixes in the following areas:

1. Fan noise and heat. People are using aftermarket software like smcFanControl to cool down their machines. In turn this makes the MBP noisy.

2. The ambient light sensor is too close to the keyboard. It is located under the left speaker/fan cover. When you type and have ambient enabled it dims and relights all the time.

Those are the only real complaints I have of the last version of the MBP. Are they fiXed?!!?

Ok well here is what I think makes sense with the whole Blu-Ray thing, there is no point in putting it in a MacBook Pro Until it has a HD screen otherwise why bother??? You want it to watch HD right but you won't be watching it in HD now so until they update the resolution of the screens I think it is very unlikely that they will incorporate Blu-Ray.

agreed fan noise and heat will be interesting to see if they've made improvements there. its not going to stop me from eventually buying but it would be nice if they found a way to at least improve it

early reviews from macworld (the website) states that the LED screen is very bright and will reflect glare at any light, if that is true my fears are gone, i don't care if my reds have 0.1% less hue.

i am curious to see the answers to this as well. i didnt think anything could get hotter than my previous dell latitude, but my SR MBP can get HOT, esp when playing a video...

1) The MBP screen has a 1440x900 resolution. My 720p HDTV has 1366x768 resolution. Ergo, the MBPs have HD displays.

2) Throw out the whole resolution thing. There are a lot of movies I have only on Blu-ray. Maybe I want to take those on a trip or give them the HandBrake treatment. The digital copy that comes with BD movies is just an SD version, which is exactly how a lot of us want to use BD movies.

3) (In response to another post) The average consumer could give a rat's patoot about that whole licensing thing. I can get a Dell Studio 15 notebook with a BD-ROM drive for $1,199. Therefore, Apple can get their sorry HD act together and put a Blu-ray BTO option on there on a $1,999 computer.

CON:

Chiclet keyboard.

I have MBP with 'old' keyboard (with its embarassing to me and never used utterly pointless 'backlight' feature') but I use a new wireless keyboard at home and I far far far prefer typing on the new 'chiclet' (this is a word now?) keyboard. Takes a little getting used to but I much prefer it.

It might look worse but it could well be better to type on imo.

I'll jump on the "No Blu-Ray" Bandwagon as a CON. Not just for the MBP, but for Apple products in their entirety. I don't like the black border on the screen either. It's just ugly.

Sorry, but it's here to stay. For better or worse. Did you really think that they were going to keep the old PB keyboard?

The chicklet keyboard is here to stay for the next couple of years or so, but it won't last. They'll move on to the next thing eventually.

I have the chicklet-style extended keyboard, which I've been using since January. I loathe the thing, to be honest. I really think they made this type of keyboard for people with very short nails who don't type quickly. It looks great, and I appreciate that it doesn't amount to a display case for dust and crumbs like the last one did, but it's really unpleasant to use. I'm a female with moderately long nails, and there is just nowhere for them to go on this thing, much unlike the previous types of keyboards. I look forward to this fad being over.

Bluray video is 1920x1080p so you still don't get to view the full resolution of the video.

My Pros:
Dual gpu's, good idea although not 100% until it is a more flawless switch.
ddr3
removable hard drive!
new physical design(about time), I like the new shape, but I'm not 100% on the bezel, I don't hate it though.

My cons about the new mbp:
-no matte screen
-no higher res screen option, I have a 15" mbp and 1440x900 is hardly enough for pro apps.
-no minidisplay port->dvi adaptor included, barely any monitors have display port and none have this mini version so no one will be able to use an external monitor without buying a separate cable or a new led 24" (glossy)cinema display.
-Only one firewire, daisy chaining is not always an option
-no esata port, very useful for professionals
-and no bluray, licensing issues is a bs response, other companies can offer it on much cheaper laptops. I don't want apple's subpar "HD" content.

Definite confirmed nail-biter here! Chicklet 'just works' for my pudgy scratchy fingers but I can appreciate your dilemma :) The key returns are ultra-low, it must sound like teeth chattering listening to your typing on Chicklet :D

I was planning on getting the new macbook pro but all these extra adapters I have to purchase bother me.

My current video editing setup.
  • capture from fw400 deck
  • capture to an e-sata drive connected to a express card adapter(can't capture to a fwdrive because of dropped frames)
  • MBP connects to a 37" 1080p set via a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Great for editing

if I were to purchase the new macbook pro, I would need to...

  • purchase fw800 to fw400 adapter so I can connect my deck.
  • Hopefully my expressCard adapter still works so I can connect it to my e-sata drives, otherwise where am I going to capture video to?(internal drive is not fast or big enough)
  • I will need to purchase the $99 adapter and on top of that connect it to another adapter to convert DVI-D to HDMI so I can use my 1080p set as an 2nd monitor.

for being a "pro" machine, it's not giving us pros many options and is further complicating our setups by having to purchase additional adapters. The more things I have to connect, the more adapters I have to purchase, the higher the risk of something not working and/or becoming a pain to try and troubleshoot it if something goes wrong.

Forgot to include my whole list of pros/cons in my last post. I'll just note the things that really matter to me.

Pros:

• User-replaceable hard drive
• Mag latch
• Trackpad and keyboard won't show wear easily
• Trackpad is larger
• Dual GPU business (sounds good, anyway)

Cons:

• Glossy screen. (Mind blowing, really. It's a sad portent of things to come. If you want a really pro set-up, you'll be paying for the high-priced peripherals from now on.)
• Chicklet keyboard.
• $100 price increase for academic customers.
• $30 more for adapter just to make proprietary video out useful. (This kind of omission is a serious departure from the Apple I've known and loved since 1986. What ever happened to the company that included these little surprises in the box that made the whole package feel truly premium?)
• No Firewire 400...there's another $20 or so for yet another adapter.
• Heavier. (How is it that my 6-year-old laptop weighs LESS (by 91 grams) than a new one? I thought they were supposed to be getting lighter. Thinner does nothing for my back.)
• Bigger footprint. (Will no longer fit in the super laptop bag I have.)

The only cons I see so far:

> No matte as mentioned;
> No 1680x1050 resolution (not even in BTO).

It's about time the 15" Macbook Pro got a higher resolution panel.

I agree. The lack of a 1680x1050 resolution is the most ridiculous in my mind. I'm on an HR 17" MBP, and while I ordered a new 2.8Ghz 15" MBP, the lack of higher resolution is going to hurt a little. Matte is fine, but I edit HD with a broadcast monitor and QC checks, so I don't NEED a matte monitor. I find the glossy more appealing for the air travel that I do (playing games, watching movies, etc).

lack of FW400 is just a fact of life folks. It's an old standard. My FW800 powered notebook drive has a 400 port on it and I can jack my HD camera into it and FCP sees it just fine so I have no need for FW400. If you NEED FW400, there are extremely cheap adapters and 400->800 cables out there for using pleasure.

Most of us who are not pleased w/ this would be happy as clams if there were a SECOND FW port....and I wouldn't care if it was 400, 800, 1600 or 3200...as long as it worked! Daisy chaining works well for HDs but not all peripherals.

What kind of camera do you have?
