Here is how I see it:

Pros:
  • LED sleep light only when MBP is asleep and not like now when the display is off
Umm. My new aluminum MB seems to turn the sleep light on when the display is off...

  • No tactile feedback on the trackpad button
Oh, there's definitely tactile feedback; it's not like the "tap to click" you sometimes see. The actual trackpad depresses when you click.

Argh, from the description I thought they removed that useless piece of crap "feature". I mean I can see that the display is off when it is black...

So even when you close the lid the light comes on immediately and not when it actually goes to sleep?

Well, that's good then. I can live with that. How does it feel in real life?

Feels great! I got used to it straight away when I visited an Apple store. It is so much easier and faster to use, and has a nice feel when clicked.

True, but you can't tell whether the computer is off or if the display is off while the lid is open and it's plugged in otherwise.

(Of course, with the "feature" on, you can't tell while it's not plugged in if the display is off or the computer is asleep. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.)

Umm. With mine, I think it waits until it goes to sleep, but I also have "sleep on close lid" turned on.

How does it feel in real life?
Frankly, I think it feels great. It took me a little while to get used to--this is my first Mac laptop I've used in years (last one was the iBook G4s), so I also got to learn multitouch at the same time. But I love having the larger trackpad without losing that feedback.

Ports vs The Logic Board

If anyone's seen the tear-apart photo's of the new model (Sorry, no link handy) you'll notice that the ports go the entire length of the logic board along the side. Because of the removable HDD and long battery along the front, there's no way to put ports on the front half of the computer. The right side is completely taken up by the optical drive. I think that explains the choice to use the Mini-Display port as opposed to the full sized port: to actually fit everything that's on there. The same goes for the FW400 port. If you added those two ports on (to the left), you wouldn't have any room to put the hard drive there. The only way to physically fit more ports onto the machine is to a) make it bigger (depthwise,) which it seems people are complaining about, or b) abandon the way all Apple's notebook screen hinges work -- covering the entire back of the machine. It's all a trade off. The easy access HDD/Battery for the room for ports. According to Job's keynote, the HDD was one of the most asked for features.

One of the things Apple did drop the ball on though is the resolution of the screen. If Alienware can come up with a 1200 vertical line 15.4", (as a BTO) why can't Apple? In this case, I think the focus was being "Green." The Alienware's still use CCFL (and glossy one's too.) But I think the glossy argument has been beat to death.

Curious to know how the new machines are for audio quality , as I'm about to pull the trigger.

Any popping /hissing when using headphones or connected speakers ? , like the previous gen.Are there any audio problems at all ? , thanks

Some new alu Macbook users are saying their machines have this hissing /popping audio problem , discussed here:

The same hissing/popping as previous gen Macbookpro's , discussed here:

I've been told by Apple that the new MBPs have a completely new audio system that rectifies the previous model's flaws/bugs. Take that for what its worth but so far the majority of new owners posting about the new audio on here have been positive (ie no beeps & hissing sounds/headphone jack stuck being on etc). We'll need to give it time to know for sure if its better though.

Did you just call in and speak to sales or ...? , because in the threads I linked to above , there are one or two saying this hissing popping is present on the new alu Macbooks .

I spoke with someone at the highest level of customer service you can actually reach...they have to contact you. It was the first I'd heard of it. Since then I've heard some audio complaints on here but also lots of people saying the bugs are fixed. I'm glad they made a move to fix the previous issues. Some of the old problems would drive me nuts being that I work with sound and music.

Well , whatever this top guy or gal has said some folks here on MaRumors are saying that it's still happening https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/586031/

They'd drive me nuts too , I'm really hesitant to go buy one , the machine I do buy will be primarily used for audio .

Could you link to where you read that the bugs are fixed , I really need a new machine and need to be sure .

I wish there was a way to find out in the flesh , I couldn't just swallow the 10% or whatever the re stocking fee it is if the machine turns out to have the hissing/popping audio issue .

Ya seriously, I've heard there's some questionable (slight) fan noises coming from the upper left side...on some machines. But overall all the hissing beeping popping sounds are fixed. Try doing a search on these forums, not sure if there's a dedicated thread or not but I've read some personal testimonials about it here.

The only thing I noticed with my Audio system is a bit of a delay after connecting something to the audio jack. The laptop speakers often play for a couple of seconds before output is transfered to the audio jack.

Otherwise I am really happy, and even like the sound quality of the internal speakers for casual listening.
