Thank you.
I've tried Apple Maps. It gets me close but not close enough in a sea of cars. Hoping these AirTags get to a closer range.

It may work ok, but I just don't think this will be a huge use case that Apple pushes. If it worked well I think Tile would have already jumped on this. But for your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

That said, as cool as I find these types things, I still havent really found a use case compelling enough to buy some personally (I've considered Tile, but keep stopping short of buying any because, really, it's hard for me to come up with something besides maybe keys I want to attach one too), so we'll see if Apple can make a compelling case that their version is more useful.

To me a backpack full of camera gear is a no-brainer. Laptop bag is another. Anything of significant value that might get snatched or even if I mistakenly left behind on the subway or something.

Edit: Perhaps the difference in perspective here is our living situation? I see all kinds of uses living in a densely populated city where I've actually lost things.

What is needed is something like AirTag but able to be tracked at very long distance when paired with your iphone. Apple watch can be tracked. Example is people can attach to dogs collar and track if runs away. It can also be life saving if person with AiTag is hiking and lost so rescue can track. Though do require very long battery life which able to send location signal for weeks. Keep in little kids pocket to track when vising public places like park, malls,Disney land, etc.

Yeah, GPS trackers.

My prediction: either it has no battery at all or a very-long-lifespan battery, ie: 10 years.

Even if it has a small flat reachable battery. It is not doing very much but pinging out once and while waiting for someone to activate it. Then it puts out more radio and power to help located it from other phones.

I hope that the small cases aren’t only leather and that they have the silicone option available. Too many accessories that come only in leather. I want a cruelty-free option!

Leather is honestly one of the only animal materials I'm ok with since it's a byproduct of beef (excluding expensive calf leather, F that) and we can't just cut off beef consumption worldwide. Leather products often have hundred-year-longevity, whereas silicone products become trash after a year or two and have an arguably worse (and constant) chemical impact. The solution to leather definitely isn't plastic.

I really hope the world keeps working toward more renewable and more humane materials. I've noticed people play a lot in to the impacts of the accessories but not into the human exploitation used to harvest the rare earth minerals inside our devices. And, as a whole, we need to address the fact 100 corporations cause 71% of emissions...

A stalker just has to stick one on your car

The stalker will need to follow the car 24/7 and be in bluetooth range of the tag the entire time. I don't think many of you know how these things work and will be sadly disappointed when you purchase these expecting free wireless tracking.

This is what I keep saying. People also don't seem to realize that far more effective GPS trackers already exist and are being used in this exact way. (Especially when trying to track a suspected cheating spouse).

No. Let's say the stalker wants to find out where you live. They put a tag that they own and control on the bottom of your car. Every time someone with a newer iPhone walks past that car, it will use that random person's phone's GPS to note the position.

That assumes the car is always in a location where random strangers walk within 30' (or likely less) of it. I see this happening in SOME areas...but a huge portion of the places a car may be parked might never see a pedestrian walking by that closely.

And I assume Apple will provide an option if you want your device to participate in tracking other individuals devices. Most folks don't go through settings so it will remain off by default. Heck, most people don't even know how to update their devices.

I'm from NYC FWIW :). I've lost things, even things of value, but without something like the mesh setup for finding things Apple has such a device wouldnt do me much good for that, that's why I said I think it might be their selling point. Knowing where you last left something in NYC is a lot less useful than knowing where it is *now* :)

To be honest, I would have said pineapple or mushroom leather but I wouldn’t see that happening. My concern is primarily from a animal rights perspective, but I do know that alternatives have their own ethical implications. I would see the tags as something I would hope to own for a longer period of time compared to a phone, as I don’t imagine it’ll be a product that is upgraded.

As for rare minerals, I was under the impression that Apple are working on a recycling system for those in their products, but I don’t have a lot of trust in big business.

and yes, those large corporations need to be regulated more but as they are funding the politicians and media (hooray corruption) that is also very difficult.

I care about a lot of issues, my comment was just highlighting the lack of options for people who want to avoid animal based products.

And thanks!

I'm confused by your reply as it feels like you DO see the value in something like this.

It should be able to do that because it can use different iPhones to triangle the location.

That is exactly what AirTag would do around the globe, except the hiking because it needs some iPhone nearby to get the location. Even with a dead battery, you would get the latest location.

What I'm saying is I'm waiting to see if Apple brings something to the table that make these compelling, since the *currently available* options for this don't serve a useful purpose for me
