I think AirTags will be one of the few Apple products that I can check off my list of products that I don’t care about. I just want them to release it so I don’t have to hear about them anymore.

Watch me eat these words soon but I just don’t see Apple introducing these pretty much ever. Reason being is when Apple enters a market segment they dominate it from the start. The “bluetooth tracker market” isn’t a huge market and although they would dominate it I just don’t see the intelligent days to day application for this.
The market is huge and it will become huge(r), people just don't know it yet. Cars, bikes, drones, kids, grandma, bags, and about anything that can be stolen or lost would benefit from this.

I hope there will be a public AirTag for busses and trains, one look at the map and you see them driving all over town. Put them in high value mail packages, with additional consent the information can be used for traffic and travel info. The future opportunities are huge, huge I tell ya.

I am hoping this will work very well on cars. I can't count how many times I've had a problem finding my parked car.

I’m really curious how apple will position these, when they are entering a space that is super saturated and been available for years. With UWB they will have better positioning. But who really cares? As long as I know the room something is in I can likely find where I left it...There has to be some other “killer” feature they have up their sleeve.

The killer feature is that it works with other people's iPhones around, example:

You lose something outside with an airtag attached, it's in a place where other iPhones are around, as soon as you realise you lost it and open the accompanying app it will show you where it is, based on other iPhones in the vicinity.

Hmm, got me thinking, if someone steals an object from me with an airtag attached apple would be able to *trace that object.

*That is, if they log it.

Prosser stated that it is "likely" that AirTags will be unveiled alongside the HomePod mini tomorrow.

I haven't heard anything realistic about the Homepod mini, but it's also not the leakiest product in Apple's lineup. Anybody have odds on the likelihood of this? I'm putting it down as extremely small.

Wow, size of a bottle cap. This is much smaller than I was expecting. If this pans out these will be useful and sell a ton.

That’s a good point. So how has Tile been dealing with this?

Tile is not...that I'm aware of.

I don't see this as a very good application. For starters, you'd really need GPS tracking for a car. It's not like a personal item dropped on the sidewalk. You don't have as many random people walking past.

Additionally, we already have some very good solutions for that....I think maybe even included as part of Car Play? All you need is an App that knows the GPS location of your car at the time you park. There are many out there. The only caveat being multi-level parking garages...I can see that being problematic. But the big one's in typical suburban sprawl...this already works decently.

Not sure Tile will go out of business. I am using Tile and they work great. I can even replace the battery so I dont have to keep buying Tiles. I'll bet money that you can't replace the battery in Air Tags which means when the battery dies, you have to repurchase the product over and over again.

My thoughts:
-Tile won’t go out of business because there’s more to the world than Apple. I doubt AirTag’s will work with android.
-iOS 13 beta’s leaked AirTag assets for replacing the battery in them. So you might be surprised.
-I’m ditching my Tile Pro’s because they are unreliable as heck. I get constant connection issues.

I want to be skeptical given last week’s miss, but the keychain sold separately thing absolutely sold me that this is real and is so Apple it’s beautiful. I’m skipping the 12 if the rumors are true about it but definitely picking up some of these...and the keychain 😂

Yup. I’m curious how Apple will sell these, bundled I’m assuming? This will be a popular product with the right segment of people, but the price point will be the most important part.

This ties into the iOS mesh-like networking feature that Apple recently released. All iOS devices will function as a node. So the device will be located by the last nearest iOS device and that info will be sent to the network anonymously.

Get ready to get disappointed tomorrow. No iPhones tomorrow :(

I have a feeling Tiles will be going out of the business soon. See you later.

Doubtful. Not everyone has iOS or Apple devices. Also I’m sure they’ll be much more expensive than Tile. I’ll hang on my Tile with a replaceable battery, a feature that will 99.99% not on air tags

All of these rumors are fake. Apple Car is coming tomorrow.
I'm not sure how you found your source, but you've nailed it. Apple Car tomorrow and potato-powered via a new Apple green initiative. Can't reveal inside and some items exhibited in cartoon form to protect sources. Wheels cost extra for those uninterested in using solely as a tiny house.

The "killer feature" is the massive nationwide network of Apple devices that can be used to pinpoint these tags pretty much anywhere.

If I had to guess I'd say the killer feature they'll tout is that, with the decentralized mesh location services they've introduced using iPhones, that you could locate things outside the house because they'll ping off other people's phones and devices.

That said, as cool as I find these types things, I still havent really found a use case compelling enough to buy some personally (I've considered Tile, but keep stopping short of buying any because, really, it's hard for me to come up with something besides maybe keys I want to attach one too), so we'll see if Apple can make a compelling case that their version is more useful.

yes, I think we all understand the tech behind it. But I’m talking real world functionality. Not saying it wouldn’t work at all, but the functionality would be limited and not as reliable as using existing GPS location methods. At the very least you’d have to mount them in the windshield for decent reception to passers-by.

If Apple announces these and markets them to locate a car, I’ll come back here and eat crow. But I don’t see it happening.

Imagine a stalker sliding one of these into your child's bag. Unless your phone can alert you to any nearby tags that don't belong to you. But then it'll be going off constantly if these are popular.
